1st Trimester

U/S: sac and yoke, but no baby...yet?

We went in for what we thought would be our 8 week ultrasound, but the sac measured closer to 6 weeks. There was a lovely sac, and they said they saw a yolk too, but they can't detect a fetal pole/heartbeat yet. I did blood work today and I'll do some later this week to make sure my hormones are increasing, and we'll go back for an u/s in two weeks.

We're a little disappointed, but we're trying to stay hopeful that things are just too early to see. I haven't had strong symptoms yet, so that concerns me a little too. Has this happened to anyone?

Symptoms do not determine the vitality of a pregnancy.

It could be that you are earlier than thought, unfortunately the only thing you can to is wait to see what your bloodwork and follow up US is.  I honestly thought that 12 weeks would be the earliest for an ultrasound, especially if dating.  So it could be you are just not as dar along.  Hope all goes well.

  • @harpseal135 thanks for the encouragement! Waiting is the hardest, and it's so easy to read into every twinge or lack there of. Haha
  • were you tracking ovulation?  Doctors date pregnancy by LMP with the assumption that you have a 28 day cycle and ovulate around day 14.  If you have long/irregular cycles or were not tracking ovulation it's possible that you ovulated late.  If you were tracking cycles and know when you ovulated and how far along you are than it's unfortunately not a good sign to be measuring 2 weeks behind.

  • We had a very bizarre timeline so when we went in for our first U/S the gestational was there as well as the yolk sac. It measured at around 5 weeks. Went back two weeks later and there was the fetal pole measuring at 6 weeks 6 days with a good heartbeat. Sometimes it's just too early in the timeline. I guess it's not uncommon to not see the baby that early. Hope this helps and puts your mind at ease. :)
