Re: Product Spotlight: Newborn Winter Essentials
For the infant one, get the one that goes on the car seat like a shower cap with NO fabric on the bottom or back - technically speaking it isn’t safe for riding in the car because there should be no fabric between baby and the car seat. I got this one:
https://www.buybuybaby.com/store/product/jj-cole-reg-car-seat-cover-in-grey-herringbone/1062103572
Costs $29.99 at buy buy baby which if you have a coupon you can get 20% off!!
A few things we relied upon...
- We always layered a plain white short sleeve onesie under all of DS’s clothes (including feetie pj’s). “They” say to dress baby’s in one more layer than yourself to keep baby warm and we found this system to work well.
- Our auto car starter. I know it seems like a weird “baby accessory” but we don’t have a garage so this is the next best thing to having a warm car to put baby in.
- A lightweight fleece hoodie. It’s inperative to not have any bulky coats on kiddos in car seats (it inhibits the car seat to do its job in case of an accident). We like North Face Glacier coats for our kids. The sizing starts at 3M, which works for my enormous babies. You can find similar fleece coats at Carters/ Gap.

- Along the lines of not having a bulky coat on baby, we didn’t do any sort of car seat cover (although the “shower cap style” one that @danixbanani24 mentions is a good option for one!) and instead just do a thick blanket tucked around baby’s legs. For DS, we had a PBK Stroller Blanket. I didn’t see any of theirs I liked this time around so picked up a warm, cozy one on Amazon.

- I love, love, love Zutano fleece booties for babies. With my oldest, we stopped wearing when she started to pull to stand since they’re slippery but since then, they’ve come out with ones with gripper bottoms!

For a coat, I bought a Patagonia down coat when it was on steep clearance this summer (along with one in 2T size because why not). I read on a few blogs that it's good for car seats because the down compresses really well compared to polyester fill. https://www.patagonia.com/product/baby-down-sweater-jacket/60520.html?dwvar_60520_color=BALB&cgid=kids-babies-toddlers-jackets-vests#utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_content=text+ad&utm_campaign=Brand+Plus&gclid=Cj0KCQiA8f_eBRDcARIsAEKwRGdBeQL5bEMH5kJLDMiR7GMhvVWrunXZcL-87L-5XDLOLxQCzfL9QjkaAogMEALw_wcB&start=1
Sorry for the super long link.
Does anyone have good recommendations for a warm hat that covers ears and stays on? We like to hike a lot, so baby will be outside for a few hours in the colder weather sometimes.
We also had a pair of Zutano booties for DS - so cozy! Seconding the suggestion to put a onesie under everything and load them up with blankies tucked in the carseat. Just ensure there's plenty of space around their face for breathing.
As far as hats, we had one that velcroed under his chin and covered his ears from target (like this one but in a cuter pattern: https://www.target.com/p/baby-boys-plaid-flannel-trapper-hat-cat-jack-153-12-24m/-/A-53692908). He HATED it but it stayed on and kept him warm so whatever. Any hat that didn't strap under his chin fell off his gigantic head. We never had issues with hats slipping down over his eyes, but I know that's something to watch out for if your child's noggin isn't enormous like mine ...

- A space heater. Baby will be in our room upstairs where it gets kind of cold at night.
- A fleece mattress cover for the bassinet. I really want a thick wool one, but don't know if that is going to happen. Transferring a warm sleeping baby to a cold bed is tricky.
- knee high socks or leg warmers. They cover the gap between socks and pants and stay on better. I don't love footed sleepers.
- Long sleeved onesies. The layering is going to be a pain for diaper changes, but the house is just always a little cold, and the big kids can't keep the door closed even when it is -20 outside.
- Hats. None of the other kids kept them on, but I might have to insist with this one.

Do they need to be covered? Are there any issues with being "too plush?" Are there hypoallergenic options (I love wool, but partner and a couple kids are allergic to wool, this one may be too)?
