Product Spotlight: Books

Updated because we already have a thread on babywearing (Thanks, @lovesclimbing !) and thought this would be a bit more of a fun topic.

What are your favorite or must-have baby/children's books? Do you like board books? Fabric books? Any good bilingual books? Activity/sticker books?

Re: Product Spotlight: Books

  • Actually, we do! ;)https://forums.thebump.com/discussion/12734481/product-spotlight-babywearing/p1 Maybe change this to something else. I believe I have this list of what hasn't been done up to date. https://forums.thebump.com/discussion/comment/90846437/#Comment_90846437

  • @lovesclimbing d'oh! I thought we did but couldn't find it! I searched a few pages for 'babywearing' and also used The Bump's "search this board" feature, which is just total garbage. Thanks for the link! I'll find something else to update this to.
  • Since I started this, I'll also comment on it. I'm a FTM so I don't have any experience with the more current children's books but as a child I completely wore out my first copy of Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, I loved it so much. So that will definitely be one we have in our household.
  • Personally, I love local books. Books unique to your state or area. We have a number of Alaska books that I really like. Big box stores will have these as well as smaller stores or gift shops.

I like fabric and board books. We have mostly board, but my daughter (almost 17 months) is just not gentle with them. She bends them backwards. Not on purpose, she just doesn't get that that's not how you turn pages! I let her play with them, though, because I want her to like books and enjoy them, and I don't want them off limits, and they can always be replaced. I think that worked a little too well, lol. She is always bringing us a book, plopping herself down in our laps and insisting we read to her.

My daughter loves Dr. Seuss books and books with lots of pictures of things - books that have no story and are just pictures of things and the name of what it is.

For younger babies, books of faces are fun. Books that are just pictures of other baby faces or babies doing things.
  • I’m a fan of board books for their durability, but we got a pretty large collection of paper books started from the book themed baby shower.
The BabyLit books are fun, some more so than others. We absolutely adore the Princess Baby books and everything else by Karen Katz. DD has recently become attached/reattached to Goodnight Moon and “I am a Bunny” and begs for these every night after already getting her selected stories read to her.
Usborne Books has a really cute and not otherwise available selection of children’s books, including a fantastic “that’s not my...” touch and feel series. (Full disclosure: this is an MLM type company but I am pretty sure you can buy direct from their website. I have a “book lady” and she just adds me to whatever party she has going on so I’m not 100% sure. But their selection is worth checking out!)

  • There's an alternative night time book called "Good night, Good night, Construction Site" about shutting down the construction site for the night. :) If your LO likes equipment, they would likely love this one.

Also found this gem called "I love you, stinky face". No matter what the main character turns into, mama still loves him. :) "But Mama, but Mama, what if I were a super smelly skunk, and I smelled so bad that my name was Stinky Face?"

Board books are awesome, I need a bunch of those. I have a few (primarily Seuss) but need more. I saved all the golden books from when I was a kid and they're up in the nursery already.

  • We have a ton of books. Board books are definitely a must in the beginning for durability. I have a few friends that swear by Indestructibles, which are books made out of waterproof, rip proof, flexible paper. I don’t have any now but put a couple on my registry.

  • Re: indestructibles, I have two and can vouch you can’t hurt them. But the stories are not interesting lol

  • DD has a ton of books, but her favorites are Dinosaur Dance by Sandra Boynton and the First 100 words board book of all things. She loves looking at any books with real pictures, especially of babies and animals.
  • Yea. My daughter is only just now learning to not grab a fistful of paper to turn the pages on paper books, and as I said, she's almost 17 months. We have quite a few paper books, but those are "special" books she's not allowed to play with and can only look at with mommy or daddy. I've never heard of indestructibles. Sounds interesting! Any STM+s signed up for Dolly Parton's Imagination Library? I've been thinking about it. Just haven't yet.
  • Books are probably one of my LOs favorite items! He likes little board books that fit in his hand. I recommend some smaller ones for the diaper bag as they get older. He loves books with faces especially of babies or young children, the look and find books are popular in our house (because they have so many different colors/items to look at), and he likes the “baby peek-a-boo series” predictable books.

I also recommend flash cards by DK that are touch and feel. DS has the first words set and loves those cards.
  • I’m a book worm and am doing my best to impart that on my kiddos! We have lots of book (they’re the #1 thing I ask for from family at every gift-giving holiday) and DS goes through phases of being super in love with one or another. Some of my favorites are “My Love will Find You,” “Goodnight Gorilla,” and “Steam Train, Dream Train.” Some of his favorites are “Mighty Mighty Construction Site,” “Cars and Trucks and Things that Go,” “Bernstein Bears Science and Nature”.
@catlady2015 DS LOVES “Goodnight, Goodnight Construction Site” and that author/artist pair have done several others and they’re all great!
  • Love this thread! My daughter is such a little bookworm. She has been flipping book pages since 6 months, and now at 2 years we find her sneaking out of bed to read books at night!

    A few favorites:
    Little Blue Truck
I’ll See You In The Morning
    Build-a-Block
    Peck, Peck, Peck
    Hooray for Hat
  • Dear Zoo is a staple in our family
i also love the “goodnight” series, particularly Goodnigt Ocean (what can I say I’m a beach bum)
I also love anything by Eric Carl! My son wore through his copy of the Very Quiet Cricket

This May be my favorite thread yet!
  • My 18 month old loves books. His favorites change week to week but some consistent ones are: Little Blue Truck, Itsy Bitsy Spider, Stick and Stone, anything by Sandra Boynton, I Love You Stinky Face (he loves saying mama since it repeats on each page), and Teeth are not for Biting  :D

We’ve been reading to him every night since he was very young. For tummy time, I highly recommend black and white books, like:

This one is accordion style so you can lay it out for your baby while they practice tummy time. My son LOVED looking at the different pictures.
  • OMG, this is a sure weak spot for me! We love books and have too many if that's possible. I can't help myself, I have to have ALL. THE. BOOKS! Whenever the library has a sale, we go and can get nice hardback books for cheap. Now that my DD is in school and bringing book orders home every month I usually look at their dollar books to see if they're good/we don't have them.

We used to be able to get Dolly Parton's Imagination Library for free through our county. My kids loved getting a free book every month and most of their books are really awesome. We may not have come across them otherwise.

Board books are good for little hands. I had a few indestructables for DD1 when she was a baby and had a thing for paper (she liked to chew on it). The ones we had didn't have much of a story, but we just made up a story to go with them and she loved to look at the pictures and say what they all were. I can vouch for their indestructibility.

We have liked Leslie Patricelli books are good for babies to 2 (they also can come in tiny board books, DD2 has a thing for tiny books that fit in her hand), Peggy Rathmann, Anna Dewdney, Sandra Boynton, Mo Willems and classics like Seuss, Eric Carle, Mercer Mayer, Beatrix Potter, and Margaret Wise Brown. PP was right, babies love books with babies in them, especially faces.

I don't think that's possible. Maybe not enough bookshelves? 😂
  • @mayoduck I agree! We rely heavily on the library because sometimes there isn't enough shelf space or room to put in another bookshelf! My cousin just bought a house with a wall of built-in shelves. I was drooling!

@chocolatelemons that's a good call. I used that black and white accordion style book when they were tiny. They liked to look at them.
  •  @mayoduck We definitely have a “not enough bookshelf” problem at our house. It could never be a “too many books” problem  :D
  • @Lbloom I used to think brick and mortar libraries were soon to be obsolete and thought it was ridiculous our town was building a new one. Silly of me to think so, really. I've had a library card for years now and I love it! Paper books, audiobooks, DVDs, it's so handy and I love that I don't have to buy as much!
  • We love books too. Definitely check to see if Imagination Library is available in your area as @Lbloom suggested. Some of the books I'm not a fan of, but "Goodnight Gorilla" is my daughter's favorite along with "Goodnight Sleepyhead" and those were via the Imagination Library. We love getting a new book every month! It's a free program, no need to "qualify" other than registering your child. Being from East Tennessee like Dolly, I just love how she's a champion for children's literacy!

"Goodnight Moon" is also a classic, and another favorite. She's very much into "Huckle and Lowly" lately - the Richard Scarry books. She also loves Pete the Cat's "Old MacDonald Had A Farm". We've been reading books lately about going to the potty and being a big sister. We usually read every night before bed, and she loves it.
