I was just talking to my mother about this earlier today and how I have no idea what I want to put on mine! I’m going to hope to be inspired by others here...
@leighbrek I have exactly 8 weeks which include holidays so I figure maybe I should start thinking about it. I was also hoping to copy others play lists @Augusta108
Not much advice but here's what I did...I know some people listen to soothing music during labor and then switch it up to more upbeat while pushing. Our Bluetooth speaker was the only thing I used from my labor bag. Things moved so fast, when DH put Pandora on and the first thing it played was classical music. I couldn't focus on what genre I wanted so I'm pretty sure I pushed to classical music. During the night, we would put it on and listen to an Alternative 90s station. It was nice to drown out the noise of the hospital and just listen to something familiar. We continued to do this for about a week after coming home from the hospital. I've recently started doing it again so help me fall asleep.
I’ve looked a little on Pinterest for ideas, but I think I’m going to just go with some favorite songs I can sing along with if I want and a few funny ones. Here’s what I’ve got so far:
Pressure - Billy Joel the longest time - Billy Joel movin out - Billy Joel you shook me all night long - AC/DC for those about to rock - AC/DC Don’t Stop Believin’ - Journey Renegade - Styx Africa - Toto Big Country - Big Country Under Pressure - Queen Sweet Child o Mine - Guns n Roses Eye of the Tiger - Survivor Push it - Salt n Peppa (I also have socks for this song from Etsy lol) Hurt So Good - John Mellencamp

We brought our Bluetooth speaker last time and DH picked the music off his playlist. We have similar tastes in music and I remember some Bon Iver, but that’s it.
If I remember I’ll jusr put Pandora on. When we got to the hospital I was pretty far along and only had 2 hours in the room before pushing and just had the TV on without music- when I started pushing the nurses turned the tv off, changed the lights, and put some music on. I’d honestly be fine with that again, but we get to the hospital earlier this time some music would be nice instead of just the tv!
last time we brought the Bluetooth speaker but we ended up not even using it. I don't even know why, really. I was induced, so they broke my water and started Pitocin around noon, then said I would likely not deliver until about midnight. We thought we were in for the long haul, so we took an hour or so to get comfortable in the room and familiarize ourselves with the environment. Then I wanted to walk quite a bit. Since we weren't going to be in the room while walking, we waited to pull out the music. Then went back to the room for the epidural around 530-6. As soon as the epidural numbed the pain, then I realized how intense the pressure was during each contraction and we realized I was ready to push. Everything was chaos after that and I was too in the process to even realize there wasn't any music.
We'll bring the speaker again and maybe use it, but I again want to walk as much as possible. I think it helped to dilate me and keep me focused. If I DO use a playlist, I'd just want familiar songs I like, not labor themed songs. I have Spotify, so I'll likely just play whatever I'm feeling.
Honestly, popular music annoyed the SHIT out of me during labour. I either wasn't in the mood for a certain genre, or individual songs irritated me. And these were songs that I liked when not in labour but couldn't stand in that moment. I ended up listening to soft piano music or instrumental music and it was much better. I found it helpful to focus on the rhythm of the song or pattern/repitition during contractions rather than hearing annoying beats and lyrics. It's hard to know what you're going to want in labour so I suggest having a few different playlists/options.

Yay! I've been meaning to post about this! I'm not putting on songs that are about labor or work or anything like that, just my favorite songs by my favorite artists: Indigo Girls, Dave Matthews, Brandi Carlile, the Beatles, Sara Bareilles, David Bowie, etc. I have other playlists on my spotify that I can switch to if I need more upbeat (80s hits, the Harry Potter score soundtrack), but I'm hoping that songs I love most of all will help me.
Does anyone have a goal to have a specific song playing when the baby is born? I know this isn't always feasible, but what song would you want to use to welcome your baby into the world, if possible?
My wife and I have conceived a babe with my body and frozen donor sperm through IUI, with medication support (clomid, ovidrel, and injections of progesterone) IUI #1, #2, and #3: Dec 2017, Jan 2018, and Feb 2018 - all BFN HSG Test: April 2018 - all clear! I hadn’t thought of trying to have a specific song playing when she’s born, but now I’m intrigued! Given how much this little girl goes crazy whenever I play ac/dc I think I’d pick “for those about to rock”.

Thanks for coming up with these threads to keep people engaged here while we're locked out of the PG!
I'm not sure if we would really bring a speaker or listen to music. If we do though, I might go with more soundtracks than individual songs. We'll listen to soundtracks (such as the HIMYM soundtrack, or Book of Mormon) on long vacation car rides, so in addition to being funny they may bring back good memories. I'll probably skip the Les Mis soundtrack though, that would probably be too much of a downer lol
@AshVA I do have One Day More from Les Mis - idk why but I feel like it’s somewhat triumphant and might be empowering? I have a playlist going with a mix of soundtracks and rock/pop music with words that either make me think of labor (Push It, I’m coming out, I wanna be sedated) or that I think are empowering or energizing for me. I also have another going with instrumental, more calming music with some of my favorite movie soundtracks or classical pieces. I figure that will give me options depending on how I’m feeling. I’ll also have all of Spotify available to me if I feel like I need something else. A Bluetooth speaker is definitely on my packing list for the hospital! I love music so I’m hoping it will be really helpful to me.
I think I'll probably put on a generic radio station on spotify or pandora. A friend of mine made a specific playlist and she said by the time the playlist repeated for like the 10th time it just made her super conscious of how long everything was taking. I feel like I'd be the same way.
@mrsmang That and a few other songs might be ok as standalones, I was just saying it would be a bummer (for me) to have the whole soundtrack. My luck the kid would be born right as Fantine dies...
ETA: Just remembered the song "Turning" from that soundtrack. That would be another terrible one lol.
@AshVA, I have a “Musicals” playlist that I listen to in the car a lot that has all of Les Mis on it. I can definitely state that the song that fills me with the greatest amount of horror when it comes on and I realize I’m playing it for my unborn child is “Lovely Ladies.” I feel like that one would also be a pretty bad choice for labor...
Yesss good topic! I was just talking to my client about what kind of music to play during labor, and she said when she had her baby she got an epidural (which is my plan also) and was feeling GOOD, so she played some rap/r&b and was jamming out. My taste in music is pretty bipolar, so it really just depends on my mood - I'll prob be prepared with upbeat, "let's do this" type jams (may or may not include some Cardi & the likes) and also a soothing Lana Del Rey-esque playlist if I'm feeling like I need to focus more.
I could definitely see myself being annoyed with music in the moment, so I'll just bring my Bluetooth speaker and use it if I want to. I did read on a different thread that people also use that for movies/shows so SO and you can watch together. I will probably bring the HP movies all ready to watch for something comforting.
I figure I'll probably start with my workout playlist (up-beat and encouraging music) and go from there. I have Spotify so a ton of different mood playlists already set (inc just a list of go-to favs). Hopefully that'll work!
I also have audio recordings of the HP books. Our doula said someone reading out loud is comforting to some people. I could see that being a relaxing option as well - I figure I’d bring it up in case someone else might also find books on tape relaxing.
I had a good playlist when I was pregnant with DD, and envisioned pushing to certain songs, but when I actually went into labor, I wanted absolute dead silence for the entire 9.5 hour ordeal. I found a nice soothing hypnobirthing playlist on Spotify for this time around, so if I decide on music this time, I will just zone out to that.
I had all upbeat music. Some country music and then for whatever reason a crapload of X Ambassadors and Imagine Dragons. I guess they’re my hype music?? I definitely used the playlist for all the pushing- and for better or worse my daughter was born to “courtesy of the red white and blue” by Toby Keith.
I have a playlist called “good mood songs” that is all songs that put me in a good mood. I’ve pretty much stopped listening to new music since DD was born, so it was already kinda old and it has only gotten older. I used it during early labor last time but not as much once I had my epi.

With my first, we didn’t have music. With my second, MH had his Adele Pandora station playing on a speaker, which was fantastic. It wasn’t planned but just so happened that Don’t Stop Believin’ by Journey is what was playing when she entered the world!
We probably will do a similar thing (Pandora) this time, but I may want to change it up to one of my stations (Sia or Loreena McKennitt, depending on how I’m feeling).
