Switching from Clomid to Femara

Hi everyone!
I used to be a part of this message board when TTC my first child, but I haven't been back since. Now I am TTC my 2nd and am having much more difficulty. I need some opinions, because right now I am feeling crazy.

So...I don't ovulate on my own. Without medication, I go several, several months with no period.

Here is what I need opinions on:

In May- I did 50 mg of Clomid- I ovulated (progesterone level 31). I did not get pg, and had my cycle,  but I was out of town so I couldn't get an ultrasound, therefore could not do Clomid in June
July/Sept- Since I didn't do Clomid, I didn't ovulate and have to take progesterone. I had really light spotting, but I was told to count that as my cycle, and I took Clomid 100mg (my dr upped the dose)
Two Weeks Later- I did light spotting again. I was told NOT to count this as my period. I was told to ignore the spotting and take progesterone again starting on CD28.
October- Too 150mg of Clomid (again the dr upped the dosage) and ovulated (progesterone 24), but did not get pregnant. The nurse now says that we will switch from Clomid to Femara since the Clomid was unsuccessful.

My question: If the Clomid is making me ovulate, is it unsuccessful? Why are they switching to Femara if the Clomid is making me ovulate? Should I trust my doctor or ask them to put me on Clomid again?

Thank you for your opinions!

Re: Switching from Clomid to Femara

  • Trust the doctor. Too many cycles of clinic can cause irreversible damage to your fertility. I think it’s recommended no more than 6.

  • Agreed, trust your doctor. The Femara should make you ovulate, too, and it’s less dangerous (is my understanding) than Clomid.
  • @saladoffruits are you trying to say too many cycles of Clomid can damage your fertility? Do you know of any evidence of that? I personally hate Clomid, but it’s not good to make a statement like that without any data and cause unjustified anxiety and worry to women on this board who have taken multiple rounds of Clomid.
  • Yes I am also taking clomid and it says that women should not do more than 6 cycle bc then it starts to decrease your fertility.
  • Yes my doctor said not to do too many cycles in clinic because it can cause cysts and cancerous cells if taken too long. I did I think 3 total.
TTC 4 years. 7 failed IUI's with either Clomid, Femara and/or Trigger Shots. Started IVF journey in February 2017. Polyps removed in May. 1st IVF Transfer September 26th. BFP. Expected due date 6/14/18. Baby boy born 5/25/18 at 6 lb 9 oz. My bundle of joy.

Depending on what causes your issue with ovulation the Femara might be a better option. It's documented as more successful in women with PCOS and it also carries a lower risk of multiple ovulation (leading to multiples twins, triplets, etc). I'm not sure of exactly how it's numbers in that respect compare to Clomid but I know those were the reasons my fertility specialist prescribed Femara over Clomid.
  • IF grad here, I wanted to let you know that when I was doing my IUIs I did 3 cycles with 100mg Clomid *TW* one of which ended in a CP *end TW*. My last (4th) cycle, I switched doctors and used Fermara and we successfully got pregnant that cycle. I remember my doctor explaining that sometimes one medicine works better than the other for some people. Wishing you all the best!
  • Thanks @ginny_203 will be switching to femara for the next cycle. This makes me feel better. Was originally going to switch to injections but now they decided to try femara once I get my period. I did clomid for October and had ovulated so late and ended up missing out on the IUI. We bd in that time but feel  without trigger and progesterone, wont work this month. The 2ww is the worst
  • @bobella22 good luck! I followed the fermara up with 2-3 days of a low dose of follistim. My husband had his worst sperm count ever (like ~5M washed combined over two days of back to back IUIs) and we somehow still got pregnant that cycle against all the odds. I'm currently 37 weeks with our little girl. Wishing you all the best, and yes, I agree the 2ww is the absolute worst!!
  • Wow! @ginny_203 Congratulations! So exciting. Thank you so much for sharing your story! Best of luck to you and your baby girl!
