VBAC

thought we could start a discussion on VBACs! My DD was an unplanned c/s after 20 hours of labor and fetal distress. My OB is giving me the option to have a vbac if I want but also wants to schedule c/s for 39 weeks in case! Anybody have experiences either way?! Honestly part of me may just go for the scheduled c/s and be done with it!

Re: VBAC

  • My only comment is I wish I had tried for one with my 3rd (2nd pregnancy; my oldest are twins). I was a good candidate because I healed well after my first and pregnancies were 3.5 years apart. But DH got completely freaked out when the OB described the vbac risks. So we did RSC and it was awful. My spinal was incomplete so I felt the incisions being made and had to be knocked out. I missed youngest DS's birth and it took much longer to heal.
Now I'm straight to RCS with this one. The only good thing is I don't have to make a decision either way but I'm still upset with myself for not going with what I wanted which was to try the vbac.

  • @bellebaby221 you felt the incisions?!! That’s awful! I’m sorry you had such a bad experience. I hope this one goes a lot smoother for you. I can definitely understand your DH getting freaked out by the vbac risks, I do too at times. Sometimes I wonder if it is worth trying at all.

But I feel like I should. I just wish my OB was more open to letting me go to 41 weeks so I have more of a chance of going into spontaneous labor. The last thing I want is to try for a vbac and then end up with an emergency c section.
  • @allthingsgo
Yeah, not something I wish to repeat! My nurse anesthetist was horrible. I shared my experience with my current OB so we're making sure I get the chance to talk with the person doing my spinal this time before I head into the OR. FWIW, the anesthesiologist I had for my first one was an angel. He put cotton balls soaked in peppermint oil by my face to help keep me calm. He was 100% focused on me. Loved him!
  • @nursemom913 what were the circumstances surrounding your c-section?
  • I am going to try for a vbac this time. I changed OB’s from my first pregnancy and I researched a lot of different offices for one that I thought would be most open and accepting of a vbac and so far I feel really good about it! I have only seen the MW’s so far, I haven’t seen any DR’s yet but they have all be so supportive and said they will schedule a CS at 41 weeks if I don’t go into labor naturally before that.

I was also given the advice to do prenatal chiropractic for my best chance at having a successful vbac. So I have been going twice a week since I was 20 weeks. I really hope it helps for the vbac. It has already helped with my back pain. Last pregnancy I had bad lower back pain by this point but this time I haven’t really had any!
  • I don't have anything to add as my first was born vaginally - just here to cheer you on. I was born via VBAC in 1990 and I didn't realize how big of a deal it was until recently! So high fives to you ladies.
  • @allthingsgo I was induced at 41+4. Labored for 20 hours finally got to 10 cm and pushed a few time, she dropped her heart rate to the 50s. It was emergent at first but then she recovered and they decided to just stop pitocin and go for c/s. She ended up 9 lbs 8 oz and her cord was wrapped around her shoulder twice. It was honestly pretty traumatic so the last thing I want to do is have another emergency!

We talked about trying only if I go into labor on my own, definitely do not want to get induced again. We may also opt for another ultrasound in a few weeks to check on sizing and make a decision from there!

@allthingsgo why did you end up with a c/s?!
  • @nursemom913 I was induced at 40+2 (due to having just turned 35 a month before). After 36 hours I got to 9.5 cm on my own then things stalled so a small pitocin drip was started. I finally got to 10 cm and pushing but she just wouldn’t come out. So had a cs. It turned out she was 9lbs 14oz and the cord was wrapped completely around her acting as a bungee pulling her back up.

At the time my OB said she felt my pelvis would have been big enough and had the cord not been so wrapped around I’d been able to deliver vaginally.  Now she is saying she thinks it was a size issue hence not letting me go too far past 39 weeks but definitely not beyond 40. She may do an ‘augmentation’ if I’m dialated but definitely no medicinal induction.

I’m glad everything ended up ok with your baby! That had to be scary for a bit there! I definitely understand not wanting to end up in another emergency situation.
  • @dcaron10 how did you find a chiropractor? Did you look for someone with experience with pregnant women? I need to do that but am not sure where to start.
  • Also is anyone considering hiring a doula? I’ve started the interview process. I think having an advocate and someone who can coach me through different birthing positions will be helpful.
  • @allthingsgo I’m a nurse and a patient I had his wife was a home birth MW and she is the one who told me about doing chiropractic and gave me this website to be able to find a certified chiropractor in my area

  • I had a successful VBAC with my second! I’m planning another for this little guy. I was induced at 39 weeks due to various reasons and all ended exactly as I wanted it to. Definitely recommend the doula. Our hospital offers them complimentary, so I didn’t hire one on my own, but I totally would hire one now if I wasn’t going to the same hospital. They help so much.
  • @PurplePoppy424 they let you be induced? My MW said I would have to go into labor naturally by 41 weeks and they won’t induce me at all. I had to be induced last time so I really hope I can go on my own this time!
  • @dcaron10 that website is great! Thank you!
  • I had a c section with my first at 36 weeks because my water broke and she was breech. I was honestly in such shock because “she wasn’t supposed to be here yet” and I don’t remember too much- except that it was fine. I had a choice with number 2 and opted for the repeat section... it was so much less stressful, I knew what to expect and walking it it was like going to the “baby store”. Recovery from both was speedy and I have no regrets. This one will also be a repeat...
  • @dcaron10 They did! The OB I had at the time was actually pushing for it.
  • @kcl283 this honestly sounds great but I just can’t decide. My recovery from my c/s was honestly so easy the first time. And to have a set date and time would be nice.
  • I had an unplanned C-section with DD. Water broke at 38 weeks. She was deceling from the start. Basically, the CS was because the deceling was starting to get worse, but also it was nearing 24 hours since ROM (infection risk), and I was hardly progressing in labor despite pitocin and other measures.

I was told I'm a good candidate because it's been 5 years, and the reasons for my previous CS were very dependent on the specific situation. I really would like to try for a VBAC, though I’m afraid of/have an intuition that I won't progress again, so we'll see. OB has me penciled in for a CS at 41 weeks.
  • @notthecheat your situation sounds exactly like mine. I had an unplanned c-section with DS at 38 1/2 weeks. My water broke and I didn’t really progress so they started me on pitocin and after 27 hours I got to an 8 but the Dr didn’t think I was going to progress anymore and said I had to go ahead with the CS.

I am worried about the same thing this time. I really hope I will start labor before my water breaks this time and maybe that will help me progress better
