GTKY: Halloween/Scary Movies

What's your favorite Halloween themed or scary movie?

I'm not into scary stuff, but love watching Hocus Pocus!

Re: GTKY: Halloween/Scary Movies

  • Nightmare before Christmas, Monster squad (doubt anyone remembers that 80s gem), and the Charlie Brown/Garfield Halloween specials!

I am also a wuss when it comes to scary movies/horror/gore.

  • @sparklingdiamond I LOVE Hocus Pocus. We also watch The Shining every year in October. In not really into the slasher type movies, but ghost/haunted house movies do a pretty good job of creeping me out.
  • Hocus Pocus and Hotel Transylvania is about as Halloween as I get.
  • @ruby696 I have never watched The Shining because I read the book and it scared the crap out of me!!
  • @sparklingdiamond I keep telling MH that I need to re-read the book - it's been so long, but it's got to be scarier than the movie. The movies is really not scary at all. And it's fun to see Jack Nicholson and Shelly Duvall look so young!
  • Halloweentown!!! Disney original movie 😂 It’s the best. Anyone else?
  • @luckystar28 yessss! That’s about as scary as I’ll go.

But only Halloweentown, Halloweentown 2, and Halloweentown High. Because eff Return to Halloweentown. They think they can just change the actress who played Marnie on us like we wouldn’t notice. Pshhhh.
  • I don't do scary movies. But Hocus Pocus, Halloweentown and the like, I'm all for! We tried to watch Coraline with the kids, niece was too scared to finish. Last weekend we did Ghostbusters and even that she had a hard time with.
  • @prpl11butterfly The old Ghostbusters or the newer one?
  • @sparklingdiamond old, #1 because we could only convince DS to watch because of the Stay Puff Marshmallow Man 😂. I really want to see the new one though!
  • @prpl11butterfly I gotta say, I don't blame your niece for being scared of Coraline. Even though I liked the movie, it was scary! I don't really enjoy scary movies. Husband and I went to see Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets with the Symphony a couple of weeks ago, so this past weekend we decided to continue and do a full rewatch. We got some butterbeer too :) but that is as festive as we will get.
  • We don't really watch halloween movies. I think next year when DS is more into it and understands I'll show him Hocus Pocus. It was on tv the other day and he watched it for about five minutes before he got distracted. He was fascinated by the sisters teeth for some reason.  It was too cute.

@jmvander I love the idea of a Harry Potter rewatch. That sounds like a great Halloween tradition to start. Might do that next year! I love Harry Potter!

@Dcwtada I LOVE The Nightmare Before Christmas. We watch it every Halloween here.

I’m more into the thriller Halloween movies, and some slasher ones, but anything that takes the gore too far, I’m out. So The Shining, Insidious, Haunting in Connecticut, and the Scream movies. I also liked one Freddy movie I saw, but I don’t remember which one it was.

ETA: I thought The Exorcist was funny. It just wasn’t scary at all to me.

  • @luckystar28 I’m with you on Halloweentown. I haven’t seen it in years, though.

DH, a couple of friends, and I are all going to watch a scary movie tomorrow night, so I’m prepared to not sleep at night for at least a week. I don’t do well with scary movies at all, haha.

    #1 Hocus Pocus

#2 Silver Bullet (it's an old werewolf movie...I've loved it since I was little!)

#3 Scariest Places on Earth -not a movie but... I LIVED for this show when it was on! Found it again recently on the amazon fire stick...it's awesome (:

  • I always watch Hocus Pocus and Casper. DH and I are watching The Haunting of Hill House on Netflix and it gives me the creeps.
  • Love love love Hocus Pocus and Halloweentown. Also a big fan of the traditional horror movies: Nightmare on Elm Street, Halloween, The Howling, Scream. Anything scary is right up my alley.
