Outdoor Work Clothes

I often work in both an outdoor and office setting- sometimes I need to be tromping around in the woods or inspecting a construction site, so my work requires a rugged pair of "field clothes" to change into. My field pants no longer fit, and I am having the WORST time trying to find something that fits that ISN'T FREAKING LEGGINGS (not professional/work appropriate). The only maternity hiking pants I've found are $80+ or are from the UK, with very limited options and sizing info. This is mostly a rant because the extreme lack of functional outdoor gear for women is problematic and unfair. I though about maternity cargo scrubs, but the fabric seems to be very thin and would likely get torn to shreds in no time. Any tips, brands, or specific product lines would be much appreciated.

I feel your pain. I work on ships in industrial spaces for the time being. I'm still in my same work jeans, even though I haven't been able to button the top button in months. I wear a belt so it hasn't been obvious. Your best bet is to size up on something you know will work. They make button extenders and the belly bands to help keep them fastened and up. I wear Lucky Jeans because I like the fit but I've also worn Dickie's work pants before. The Men's pants especially are handy with lots of pockets and a decent, loose fit. They sell those at Walmart and you could wear them after baby too.

I'd recommend that you change your username so we can get to know you better, as well as introduce yourself. One offs that are this specific clutter up our board and we have a maternity clothes thread going already that this would have fit nicely in.

  • So I can vouch for scrubs. Some of the brands like carharrt are really durable. I wear mine on my farm all the time and so far haven’t ripped them. Uniform pants (like what EMTs wear) also come in maternity sizes and are really durable. You can also sew stretchy panels (or have them sewn in) to your regular work duty pants, and I’ve had good luck with wearing a Bellaband over bigger sizes as long as I’m just walking and not stooping/crouching/crawling.
I also went to the Good Will and got lucky with some bigger sizes of drawstring pants that are working great. They probably won’t last me the whole pregnancy, but for 3$ I’m getting my money’s worth now.
I definitely feel you. I don’t think there are maternity specific options for this problem. But female EMTs and firefighters have it figured out let me tell you (and I’m lucky to know several of them that clued me in).

  • I'm always climbing around in the woods and have been living in pants my mom bought me a while ago from Duluth Trading Company. They are hiking pants that look decent and have an elastic waist with a zipper and button (they don't fall down with stuff in my pockets like drawstring pants do). I haven't gotten huge yet but I've outgrown other pants and these still fit me pretty well. They're lightweight material which I prefer - it means I can wear them in warmer weather and I can throw on leggings or thermals underneath if it's cold. I'm guessing I won't be able to wear these my whole pregnancy but I might try ordering a size up once I get too big for these.
