So, Matthew has had a tiny bit of a setback. He got bumped up to 2 liters and around 23% oxygen. They have been doing all PO feeds (by mouth), but I think it's wearing him out. Today, he was too tired to even try much BF. So they are going to every other feed PO. I'm hoping this will help him get stronger and maybe be able to stay constantly at 1 liter and 21%. Today, he was so tired, he literally slept through taking his bottle. I'm hoping that by doing this we don't have a major setback, and we can still continue progressing.
Thanks @highsteaks. It was hard leaving today because his O2 sats kept dropping. Everything was just too much to fast for his little body to keep up with. H is going back with FIL, and I'm hoping he will be a bit more alert.
@wildrainbow so sorry today is rough for your little man! He looks so good though I hope he just needed a rest day and kicks some butt tonight/tomorrow!!
@wildrainbow - I'm sorry for the hard day. Have they mentioned why they think he still needs high flow? I wasn't sure if they diagnosed him with surfactant deficiency (I assume not if they didn't give him any) or something else. Hopefully slowing down on feeds will allow him to be on less o2. Thinking of you and your sweet boy.

@mockingjay1 They haven't. I just called a little while ago and he is back to room air at 1 liter. My concern is that the minute they try a bottle or anything he will be right back up again. It really sucks. I'm hoping that the break to every other PO feeds will help him stay stable on O2. I think his little body is just working to hard with trying to breathe and taking PO feeds. His stats are pretty perfect when I'm there and holding him, but obviously, that can't happen 24/7. Such a frustrating roller coaster.
@wildrainbow I'm so sorry for the setback. That is really frustrating, and it's so hard watching them struggle when you can't so anything about it. I'm sorry you can't be with your little boy tonight, but I'm glad your H will be there. Please keep us updated. I hope things go smoother tomorrow.
AFM: I left H at the hospital and went home with my mom and DD1. It was so hard to leave Sydney and I'm a complete mess. Trying to remind myself that I need to take care of myself too, so I'm hoping to get a good night's sleep in my own bed. It was hard today watching her fight her intubation and be so uncomfortable. I wanted so badly to take all her pain away. Her surgery is at 12:30 tomorrow and I'll be heading there first thing in the morning to see her. The surgery should last a couple of hours. We got to meet her surgeon today and he was amazing. He had a great bedside manner and was so confident that he'd get the mass out all in one piece. It was helpful getting to meet him face to face. I'm happy to have this group of other NICU moms to talk to. I never thought I'd be here (do any of us, though?) and it's such a huge support system to have.
@wildrainbow - So many hugs. It's so hard, and as frustrating as it is it's not uncommon when PO feeding attempts are increased for there to be setbacks as I'm sure you've been told. I know that doesn't make it any less frustrating and difficult. I hope he does well with PO feeding every other feed.
@offtoneverland - I hope you are able to get some rest. Praying for you all as Sydney has her surgery tomorrow. I can't imagine how difficult it is to see her like that.
All you NICU mamas are so, so strong.

@offtoneverland Praying that all goes well tomorrow. I know it's hard to leave your baby, but taking care of you is even more important now. Your baby depends on you being there for her. Know that she is receiving the best care. As my NICU nurses say, they are the world's most expensive baby sitters, use them. Plus, they are seriously amazing.
Thank you everyone for the kind words and reassurance. @wildrainbow "the world's most expensive baby sitters" made me laugh. So true! The NICU nurses are so great at taking care of all of our babies. So glad we have them to rely on so we can also take some time for ourselves. Any more updates on your little guy tonight?
@offtoneverland I will be thinking about you and hoping for a smooth surgery for Sydney. Staying strong is important and it's good that you are taking care of yourself and getting some sleep tonight.
@wildrainbow sorry you had a tough day but Matthew is a strong little man already! He will bounce back!
apparently elise is going to be discharged sometime this weekend! haven’t talked to the nurse or doctor yet, but the front desk let the cat out of the bag after i dropped off the carseats and tried to leave right after to get some coffee before care time.
emilia is still tbd. she had another desaturation yesterday that got down to the 30s and she needed to be physically stimulated to start breathing again. everytime that happens, it resets the discharge countdown to at least another 8 days. i’m seriously thinking of getting one of those owlette monitoring thingies for her if she gets discharged without a hospital issued monitor.
@highsteaks About 24 hours after my son was born he started having seizures where he would stop breathing. This was the only sign of his seizure so we lived by the hospital monitors. When we were getting close to discharge they kept telling us that we should watch him closely for any seizure like activity and that it would likely present as it did before because they would come from the same spot in his brain. Ok, so I guess we will never sleep again!
So we decided to get an Owlet sock. We hooked it up to him at the hospital to test out the accuracy and other than being a little slower, literally only a second or two delay, it was dead on with the hospital heart rate and oxygenation monitors. We have never had any false alarms. The only time we get a notification is when it has disconnected from his foot or the base by accident, I was trying to bounce him to sleep in the living room which was out of range.
Yes it is pricey but we can actually sleep so it is 100% worth it in my opinion! I have also seen on their FB page that they offer financing or cheaper refurbished/test models.
Sorry for the novel ladies! Feel free to PM me if you want more info on it but know that we love it!

thank you @krash_! i really appreciate the review. i just added the monitor to my registry and it looks like i can claim the discount on it, so that’s awesome. the peace of mind will be nice. i don’t have questions just yet, but i may send a pm when i think of one! thanks again!
and i’m really scratching my head that your doc told you to just watch him. geez— my kiddo usually drops when she’s in deep sleep... how would we even know their hr/oxygen is low, especially motn?!
eta— elise failed her carseat oxygen test today *spectacularly* so discharge may not happen this weekend like we thought.
Oh no @highsteaks -- that's incredibly disappointing. I am so sorry. I'll be keeping you and your girls in my prayers that you all get to be home soon as a family.
Last night they had Boo in the NICU. The nurses made costumes for all the babies and dressed them up. They had a photographer come in and do pics and refreshments for families. It was pretty special. Matthew, is struggling to get rid of his oxygen completely. He can get off of it for a few hours, but has to go back on, sometimes on higher liters and O2 percentage. I didn't get a chance to BF him yesterday morning because his O2 was too high. We have been in the NICU for 12 days, and I swear the hallway to those double doors is getting longer. Like every one else, I'm just ready for him to be home. He will be 38 weeks tomorrow, hopefully this week will bring lots of changes for the better.
@wildrainbow Matthew is so cute. I'm so sorry for the continual setbacks. Stay strong, momma. You got this and you're doing your very best. I'm loving his first Halloween costume!
@highsteaks Sydney is doing great today. She's been in quite a bit of pain, but they are managing it and are giving her morphine and a fentanyl drip. If she handles the affects of the medicine and can keep up her breathing, they should be able to extubate her later today. She's getting a blood transfusion today as well because her levels are just a little on the low side. MH and I both stayed over night while my mom watched DD1. We'll be heading home later today and it'll be our first night away from Sydney, but we want to bring some normalcy to DD1 and it'll be good for us all to be together.
@wildrainbow those pics are so so soooo precious! i’m so happy to hear that your nicu sounds so wonderful. that being said, i know it’ll be so much better once Matthew gets to go home thinking of him and you.
@offtoneverland you are such a strong mama! Sydney will get all the rest she needs tonight to hopefully go home soon. she is in great hands. enjoy your time tonight with your older dd and sleeping in your own bed.
sorry for the multiple posts, but it’s slow so whatevs. i’m at the nicu again and i never know when i’ll have to put my phone down for awhile.
redoing elise’s car seat test right now. 60 minutes down, 30 more to go... but she hasn’t failed yet! fingers crossed.
not too long ago the nicu unexpectedly lost power. there was audible panic coming from the halls because there’s a baby on critical care (with a ventilator, i think the nurse said). sounds like everything is ok though— the monitors and the important equipment have their own separate emergency power sources. there still is a bit extra going on in the halls right now trying to figure out what went wrong. sounds like maybe security and other personel checking everything. keeping in mind that all the babies are ok— the excitement is pretty interesting since i’m just here holding emilia and watching elise’s monitor.
eta- annnndddd she just failed with only 15 minutes to go.
@highsteaks I'm sorry Elise keep puts failing, that sucks. And the power outage, how random. I hope Elise can pass soon. What is their gestational age?
@offtoneverland I'm so glad Sydney is doing so well with recovery. Get some rest. If you have a recliner or a couch that reclines, sleep there. Sleeping flat after a section isn't the most comfy. That first good night's sleep makes you feel like a new woman. FX that Sydney gets extubated soon, so you can hold her.
So I have multiple posts as well. Matthew got moved to a step down room! I walked in this morning and he was out of the critical care room and in the room where babies are close to release! The Dr said h he's doing great, we just have to wean off the cannula. He can only go a few hours without it. Hopefully since he's 38 weeks, things will start to click very soon. And in even bigger news, he nursed for a good 15 minutes, with some very nice big swallows!! I'm super stoked, as this is the first time he's actually gotten something!
Walked in and he had this look on his face. Already practicing his duck face, lol.
@highsteaks The girls are doing fantastic then! Elise seems to be doing better every time she does the carseat test. So, that's amazing. No worries, love, she will get it. She may not be ready to leave her sister just yet.
@wildrainbow Seriously, Matthew is too cute! Congrats on moving to the step down room. What an exciting milestone! Also so happy to hear he was able to successfully bf for a while. @highsteaks Ugh, I'm sorry she failed. I agree with wildrainbow, maybe she's just not ready to leave her sissy yet.
We just left the NICU and we're planning to take DD1 out for pizza tonight. I may even get an alcoholic drink now that I can! It feels weird making normal plans while my baby is in the hospital, but there's really nothing we can do for her since she's on strong meds and just needs to sleep.
@offtoneverland - I think that's a great outlook and I'm sure DD1 will really love the time together and it will give Sydney time to rest.
@highsteaks - I'm sorry she failed again. I know it sucks, but try to remember she's only 36 weeks. It's not uncommon for babies to be in the NICU until closer to their due date. Obviously they have higher hopes for her than that if they already retested her in her carseat so that's great!
@wildrainbow - that's fantastic! Way to go Matthew!
I love seeing the updates on all these sweet babies!

Sydney was extubated on Saturday evening and she's been doing great. She still just sleeps a lot since she's on a lot of pain killers but I'm just glad she's not in pain. We got to hear her sweet voice a bit yesterday after she'd been intubated since Wednesday. She still has a tube going down to her stomach to suck out some of the stuff she inhaled in utero, but it's getting less and less, so I'm hoping we can start feeding her a bit soon. My mama heart will be so full once both my kiddos are fed and happy!
@offtoneverland that is such happy happy news that Sydney was extubated and you heard her sweet voice. So glad to hear that she’s doing great! I’m interested to hear how feeding goes later.
afm— avoiding a long explanation: looks like Elise will be discharged tonight, in car seat if she can pass the final attempt this morning or car bed if she cannot. Emilia can be discharged as soon as thursday if she continues to not have anymore oxygen dips that require stimulation; she will take her first car seat test today. i did not get to see them yesterday (first time ever) because dh visited them instead while i stayed home with dd1.
i wasn’t expecting them to be released this soon, at least not Emilia especially, so i’m both excited and panicked. on saturday between care times i ran over to target and impulse bought the entire baby section (exaggerating slightly).
oh!! and the girls are growing like gang busters. now they are both eating around 2.5ounces at feedings. elise is up over half a pound from birthweight and emilia is up 3/4 of a pound!
@highsteaks Loved growing like gang busters comment. Both girls are so close to being home!! That is awesome!
@offtoneverland I'm so glad Sydney was extubated and is doing well! FX you get to feed her soon!
Afm: Matthew surprised us by being off his oxygen yesterday when we went by. It was pretty amazing to see him without anything across his face. I got BF him without O2 and he did awesome! He spent all day without oxygen. At about 3:30 am this morning, he had to go back on O2. Hopefully, he will be able to come back off and stay off. He has to be off O2 for at least 48 hrs before they will think about releasing him. I will say that when the Dr called and started talking release, I was completely terrified. I dunno why it's so scary to bring home my own baby.
@offtoneverland - that's great they were able to extubate her! I hope you are able to feed her soon! @highsteaks - FX Elise passes her carseat study today and that Emilia is able to stay major episode free so she can come home soon too! Yay for great growth! @wildrainbow - Hopefully next time they take him off he'll be able to stay off! Hopefully you'll get to take him home soon!

soooo... update and change in plan. doc is willing to wait til wednesday to discharge elise, hopefully discharging both the girls together that day. should make it easier on me because i won’t have to worry about having to leave elise behind at home to visit emilia (rule against bringing back discharged twin). elise’s final car seat test moved to tomorrow to give her extra day to mature and better chance to pass. this is all great news!
tomorrow night i’m going to room-in at the nicu to practice managing both before discharge.
@highstreaks what awesome news! Hoping so hard that both girls can be discharged at the same time @wildrainbow WOOHOO! Good work baby M! Keep that up @offtoneverland I'm so so happy you got to hear baby girl's sweet voice crossing all the digits that you get to feed her super soon!
