How many embryos?

hello! I was wondering if anyone could answer my question? I’ve been trying to find some research on when someone can qualify for 2 frozen embryos to transfer? I am 32 years old and have had 3 miscarriages 2 of them were from ivf. I have a blood disorder called factor 13 deficiency which requires me to be on a blood thinner while pregnant because I will miscarry if not. Anyways this is my last attempt for another ivf transfer and I want 2 embryos put in and my doctor just keeps telling me that I need to meet certain criteria which I understand but all the information I can find is that you have to have multiple unsuccessful ivf attempts to be have 2 embryos put in. I’d figure with the number miscarriages I have had and my stupid blood disorder I surely would be able to qualify. Also how many is multiple? Can anyone help me with some Info?

Re: How many embryos?

  • I don't know what your clinic's policies are but I didn't have to meet any criteria. I said I would like to transfer the 2 embryos we got (they were untested) and the doctor agreed. I went into the transfer with only 1 BFP (natural) and 1 M/C (of that BFP), so I had no lengthy history of miscarrying or blood disorders. I was also under 35. It was entirely my decision -- and one that I'm very happy about. Both implanted but only one developed properly and is now my 7 mo old baby girl. I would have had a 50/50 shot of picking the good embryo out of the two and would have had to have a completely new FET cycle to transfer the 2nd embryo if I picked the wrong one. They were both the same grade - 4BB day 6's.

If yours are tested PGS normals, I can see them being more hesitant but it's entirely up to the clinic or doctor what their policies are in regards to multiple embryo transfer. Do you have an IVF nurse working with you? Maybe she  can explain their policies?

  • Thank you for the response. No I didn’t have mine tested. Now I wish I would have because my last miscarriage I think the embryo was bad. I do have an ivf nurse but she just tells me that I need to discuss having 2 embryos but in with my doctor which I did and he told me that CDC passed new guidelines for 2018 and only certain women can meet the criteria for 2 frozen embryos to be allowed to be put in. I think I found the guidelines under the ASRM which I believe is there governing board. That is where I found the information that states if multiple unsuccessful ivf attempts you can have 2 put in. My doctor told me that the CDC can fine the fertility clinic up to $60,000 for any additional embryo put in that doesn’t qualify. I just feel like it’s up to the drs discretion and they don’t want to take any chances. I don’t know. It’s just frustrating because I would like to know for my sanity and getting answers out of the is like pulling teeth.
  • @respcare Not sure on this but is it because of your blood disorder that you're not eligible? Carrying two can put an increased load on mother and baby - it might be their policy
