Infertility

Starting IVF next week

Hi All! I'm starting my first cycle of IVF in just a few days now. (I introduced myself in an earlier post. I'm a little nervous for all the shots but, excited to do something new. Any tips or tricks for surviving IVF? <3 Sending love to all of you!

Re: Starting IVF next week

  • Welcome! No worries about the shots, the first day is the hardest, it gets easier. I bought a buzzy bee- it has ice wings and vibrates. I used it more for progesterone injections during my FET, but you may find it helpful during the stim shots. Good Luck!

  • Just focus on one day at a time and you'll be fine! Sometimes it can feel overwhelming -- emotionally and physically - so just try to keep the perspective of making it one day at a time. The shots get easier as you get used to them. Good luck!!

  • I'm doing my first cycle now. I've been on lupron/cetrotide for the past two weeks. I'm starting gonal F, menopur, omnitrope tomorrow.  I was super nervous about the shots but it's really not that bad. I totally agree about taking it one day at a time.  I call/email/meet with my my IVF coordinator frequently. She had me do a couple of saline injections so I could practice. I was worried about the IM injections but we were able to go into the clinic to help us with the first one.
  • Good luck for your first IVF cycle, I hope you gets lots of healthy eggs. The shots are not so bad at all, and after a few times you will turn into a pro and it will be routine. It's all quite exciting actually, just keep focusing on the goal.

A tip I might give is prepare a few days of meals/snacks for after the egg retrieval because it is recommended to take it easy for the first few days (I was told to take two days of "couch rest"). Let yourself have a few treats, whatever that means for you, and just breathe. That is what helped for me, after the egg transfers, it was to just breathe and tell myself "I have a little embryo in me right now, it has a good chance".

  • Welcome! Having gone through this process once already (*TW below*), I would suggest to surround yourself with those who support and understand you. IVF is an emotional roller-coaster and lots of ups and downs. If you're not open about the process with family or friends, these boards are amazing for support. It can feel lonely at times if you don't know anyone personally going through this and asking questions/bonding with the ladies (and occasionally men) on these boards is so so helpful. Don't be afraid of the needles and have faith that this process will work. Good luck to you and fx for success!

@lwalsh87 I know this sounds silly, but watch the videos on how to administer the meds. I think I watched them almost every time I taking the shots (my DH was traveling / working though almost all of my times) so I did them all (except the first one) myself and I found it strangely reassuring. Make sure you are sleeping and taking really good care of yourself -- acupuncture, whatever helps with stress relief. If you are traveling, have your doctor prepare a note for you to take with you so TSA doesn't hassle you.
Drink lots and lots of water and stay well hydrated.
Second @Alyeena in prepping favorite foods - felt super bloated after ER and didn't feel like moving the day of and after but hopefully you will have less symptoms!
Do you know what your medications are? I remember that menopur shouldn't be refrigerated and the Folistim only needs to be in the fridge until you start using it in your pen (it hurts much less when it's not cold!).
