Re: Product Spotlight: Nursery Furniture

  • So for our first kiddo, we went big w/ the nursery furniture. We were fortunate that my inlaws wanted to purchase it for us because we bought from a specialty baby store and spent a boatload of cash.  Selected a convertible crib, tall dresser, long dresser (that doubled as a changer), bedside table, and plush glider w/ footstool.

That being said... we didn't go that route w/ # 2 because we felt it was a big waste of money.  DD has gotten our "monies worth" from the convertible crib (still using it as a full now and it's in near perfect condition) and we've used the furniture pieces between DD & DS's rooms (and will use the tall dresser in this baby's room).

The crib we selected for DS is THIS ONE from Amazon.  Costed a fraction of what DD's did.  Converts to a toddler & day bed but we never converted it (DS is a big guy so we went from crib to single bed for him).  We'll use this crib for the new baby because it's still in great shape, has a small footprint, and has a minimalist style.

As far as our glider... I LOVE my big, plush glider & foot stool.  It's the one thing from DD's nursery purchase that I don't feel was a waste.  I've logged many, many hours in that thing and will log more w/ the new baby. Super comfy to nurse in as well as sleep in.

  • So for DS1 we got a crib for free that someone donated to us and yes I made sure it met requirements before I took it. It is a convertible crib and we do have the pieces to convert it.  Bought a brand new mattress of course. This baby, bought a nice crib off FB marketplace, have yet to buy mattress. I second @okayestmom12 about a chair/glider that you really love, you will be in that thing forever rocking, holding, burping the baby, letting the baby sleep on you.
  • Third suggestion to shell out for the rocking chair. I thought I would be a "cool mom" who just used a chic accent chair instead of a rocking chair. And then someone offered to buy me one and it was LIFE CHANGING. Mine isn't even fancy - it's just from Target - but it happens to be extraordinarily comfortable.
  • I will say this about my nursery chair experience. There is so much spit up and spilled medicine on the chair. This next kid is just going to add to the level that is already on the chair. If we keep the chair after the baby gets older, we're going to have to buy a slipcover. Maybe other moms are better at keeping their chair clean or maybe they didn't have the babies with projectile spit up and the wiggly babies that would let the medicine dribble onto the chair.
  • We bought a convertible crib, long dresser as changing table and rocker w. recline and foot piece that can be put down for DDs room. Probably doing the same for DS. Mid level cost- so not too bad and all pieces will be used for years-so.
    TW:
    1 infant loss
    8/17: Our daughter was born
8/18: Our daughter kicked open heart surgery ass
2/19: We lost our son to Prader-Willi/Paradoxical Vocal Cord/ Noonans at 6wks old
    4/26/2020: EDD for baby #3!!!
  • All three of my kids have/will have had the same nursery including furniture. We will move DS into a room with DD, probably around Christmas, as he's still in the nursery.

We have a Jennylind crib - It's amazing and it was the one thing I've always wanted:

We have a dresser from PBK with a changing pad on top and an arm chair from IKEA. It's worked for two, so we're sticking with it.

  • I'd be interested to hear what you S+TMs think makes for a good nursery chair! Also, are some more BFing friendly? It's the one item of furniture that I really want to get right.
  • I literally NEVER sat in the baby’s room
for feedings when I was breastfeeding my youngest. It was either in my room in my bed since we roomed in for awhile or in the leather recliner in the living room. I needed TV to stay awake, lol. My recliner that my in laws gave me when they bought new furniture is my favorite thing. I won’t be doing that this time either because DD will be room sharing with the new baby when he/she arrives.

I need to buy DD a “big girl bed.” Probably a twin(?) but I’m not sure. I’m sure they’ll eventually end up bunked if we are still in this house in a few years. Hopefully we won’t be, but I don’t know.

I might buy a new crib mattress since Lou has used this one for so long. I don’t know. We have cheap crib that we got online for less than $150 and it does the job.
  • @becks_726 - I rarely sat in the baby's room. I'm glad we didn't spend much. At night, I nursed in bed. During the day, I was on the couch in our living room.

  • We've ordered and set up most of our furniture (crib, glider (I am ready to sleep in it!), dresser).
The current route we're planning is to use the top of the dresser as a changing table - are there any cons to this? Or specific tips for this plan?
  • @becks_726 - I really like how plush my glider is. It also has plush arms on it which meant I didn’t need to really use a nursing pillow when I nursed in it. I also liked having a gliding foot rest too - made it extra comfy!

@thechickendance - We did a pad on top of the dresser for our first two - no complaints!

  • This FTM has gone back and forth about cribs. Was thinking this one DaVinci Autumn 4-in-1 - will keep an eye on it during the holidays for sales. Good crib? I liked that it was Greenguard gold certified- seemed like a good thing??
  • @becks_726 my best advice for a chair, one with good cushion and one you have physically sat in in real life to see if you think it’s comfortable. I went to the store and sat in chairs before picking one.
  • I want to chime in on the chair thing, because omg it was the most worthwhile big item we purchased. We bought this dutailier beauty, which is out of stock at this link, but they're a popular brand: Dutailier Modern Grande Platinum Glider and Ottoman - Espresso & Velvet https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00578PUXM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_9BYZBb2DRAG19
Not only is it super comfortable and big, so now my DS and I can both sit in it to read books and whatnot, but the fabric is micro fiber which means a warm washcloth cleans it, and I mean including coffee and chocolate. Miracle of miracles. I spent a fair bit of daytime on the couch with DS when he was a newbie but loads of time in the chair too, and both my SO and I did night wakes with him in the chair. Also a great place to escape when others were visiting and I needed to get away with him.  We want another for baby two, because DS loves this chair where we sit with him snuggling and read books every morning and every night, but we can't afford another one!
  • @sjnsjnsjn definitely agree with going microfiber! My main requirement for our chair was that the upholstery was microfiber, definitely more cleanable, and my cats can't destroy it.
  • You guys are helping my case with DH on getting a good glider! He doesn't want to spend $500-600, but I think its worth it and will hopefully use it for more than one kid. We have a ranch, so I think I will spend time in the baby's room feeding/rocking since I don't have to walk upstairs. i could see with a two story house how some moms don't go up and downstairs and set up a separate feeding/changing station on the main level.

  • @JamieH2000 - We did go w// the matching ottoman glider and I love it.  With DD, she was formula fed so after her bedtime bottle, I'd swaddle her right there on the glider before rocking and popping into bed.  With DS, he was breast fed and there were many, many post 4 am feeding "co sleeping" naps in that chair (with my feet on the ottoman ;)).

  • Here is the glider in DD's nursery.  I'm probably irrationally excited to bring it up from the basement and use it again - ha!

  • @okayestmom12- ok good to know! I'm hoping I can keep it in decent condition and that even when we are done with babies, it could work ok in another room since it doesn't totally scream nursery.

  • Omg @okayestmom12 your pic reminded me of the single most important piece of nursery furniture: a side table next to the rocking chair. I had a snack box there and always a huge bottle of water. It was so valuable.
  • sjnsjnsjnsjnsjnsjn member
    edited October 2018
Yes to the side table! We were cheap, so we got one of these IKEA carts:
    https://m.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/art/30401789/?gclid=Cj0KCQjwjbveBRDVARIsAKxH7vkO7VOOmrN9QLNiB7aLQQNp6eA1MYez8YIODrvY4zgMMZMtNs-61CMaAhfyEALw_wcB

Then it was for water and snacks and phone and bottles or whatever. Now it's full of DS's books for bedtime!
  • @sjnsjnsjn , I think one of your bump pics maybe, had a pic from your child's room... and I saw the books on the cart (I think it was you), anyway from the minute I saw this.. I wanted one!  So I got one. I plan to use the top for drinks/snacks and the bottom for books for now :) Thought it was such a great idea!
  • Yes to the side table! It didn’t fit in DS’s nursery with the set up we had and I missed it terribly. Excited to have one in this baby’s room (I also keep a cell phone charger on there too because lord knows there will be many MOTN shopping sprees while nursing ;-) ).
