What happened? I did the oven version, boiled the milk, added it to the 1/2 cup stonyfield and whisked, covered and put it in the oven with the light on overnight and this morning I just have iffy lukewarm milk. Man that sucks.

Re: Ok yogurt people mine failed :(
I don't know, but I know that there is no way my husband would go near it if I made it... not even if I did it right. He's crazy paranoid about anything can can spoil.
Sorry about your yogurt btw :
Yeah...I did the same thing two nights ago. Mine ended up thickened, but certainly NOT thickened like yogurt. I mixed in some honey and fruit, put it in a pour-top container, and called it "drinkable yogurt."
I *think* what I did wrong was not let the milk cool before whisking in the starter. I'm guessing I killed off all the little yeasties. I'll give it one more whirl...
I mean maybe it was the wrong kind of milk because it was just regular Kroger whole milk which is probably ultra pasturized (label actually didn't say) but I didn't worry about it because everyone said that's what they used and it turned out fine. I'm nervous to try it again now because I'm going to feel guilty dumping a while half gallon of milk down the drain. Not to mention I have to go spend another 5 bucks on stinking yogurt.
At least I don't feel like a total loser if it didn't work for you either Glad!
Nope. No total losers here. Perhaps, together, we can both be partial losers that equal just one total loser? I'm cool with that.
;-)
Ok Glad - that's exactly what happened. I looked up homemade yogurt and according to a baby food website: Remove the pot from the heat and set aside. You need to cool the milk to between 110 and 115 deg F, because these are the temperatures between which the live bacteria will efficiently ferment the milk.
I thought Brahim just added the yogurt to the milk but maybe not or maybe she's just been lucky. I guess I've got another container of yogurt to eat through.
OMG!! Did I forget to say let the yogurt cool a little?
I'm so sorry.
I'm gonna make some today and video myself. I'll put it on youtube and you can all see how I do it.
I"m really bad w/ writign recipes, but I promise you this works!!
Hey it's ok! I'm just glad I figured out what went wrong. I couldn't figure out how it worked for everyone else but not for me!
And Melsie - when you do the oven version you put it in the oven with the oven light on. The light actually produces a bit of heat and when I opened the oven this morning it was definitely warm in there. Not hot or anything but clearly warmer than the house.
