Normal to see a nurse practitioner?

I’m currently 25 weeks pregnant, Oct 2nd I had an appointment with my doctor and after we were done she told me to schedule my next 4 week appointment with her (oct 30th) and schedule a 2 week appointment (nov 13th) with her nurse practitioner. My question is, is that normal? With my first 2 pregnancies I lived in another county so I seen my doctor my whole pregnancy never a nurse practitioner.

Re: Normal to see a nurse practitioner?

  • At the practice I go to I see the nurse practitioner for every other visit. It seems pretty common.

  • The practice I go to rotates me through their 4 OBs and an NP.  I've seen the NP once, and suspect I'll see her a few more times as I transition to more frequent appointments.

  • At the practice I go to they alternate your appointments between an NP and your OB.

  • There aren't any NPs at my practice but I do alternate between seeing an OB and a CNM
  • I've seen both the NP and an OB and honestly I prefer the NPs I've seen. They like to rotate us through everyone

  • I saw a NP throughout the first trimester and will see her again for my next appointment. I actually prefer the NP as well, she’s a little chattier/willing to volunteer info vs. just answering our direct questions to be done with the appointment as soon as possible.
  • Thanks ladies
  • I've only ever seen my OB. I go to a family practice though, and there are only 2 doctors who practice obstetrics and deliver.
  • I always get the choice of scheduling with my OB or with one of the CNMs. Now that I’m done with the amnio stress, I’ll probably mostly see CNMs as long as my BP
is behaving. If that starts to get wonky, I’ll probably elect to see the OB more. Otherwise I’ll wait until close to the end to see her so I can talk about delivery/induction type stuff if applicable. But at my hospital the CNMs deliver your baby anyway most of the time if you deliver vaginally, so might as well cycle through them, right?

  • I've seen NPs and OBs for this preganacy and with DS. Honestly I absolutely love the two NPs I've seen. They are friendly and genuinely caring. I wish they delivered, too. The one did tell me that she will round at the hospital on the matenity ward.
  • My doctors office does whoever is available so I’ve seen a couple CNM and then the OB. My last pregnancy it was basically only CNM w no intent for a doctor to see me. I think it varies in the US but generally if you’re low risk there’s no need to see the OB so often.
  • I worked for an OB practice, and we would schedule certain visits with a NP for a couple reasons. First reason was so that it would free up the doctor's schedules a bit so they could see GYN patients. OB patients take priority in a doctor's schedule, and that would leave GYN patients unable to see a doctor for several months, so we tried to alleviate that by shifting some of the middle pregnancy appointments to the NP. Second reason is the NP's would have more willingness and time to do more education with the OB patients. Most doctors don't have the time to spend 20 minutes going over what a normal labor looks like and answer every single question a patient had, so seeing a NP benefited the patient in that they got more education than they would have with a doctor.
