Success after IF

Quad Screen - Please don't flame me, I am confused.

Who did it and who didn't? I know it is optional and I am fairly low risk with my age and family history but not sure if there are still merits behind going ahead and having the test done.

My doctor seemed in favor of the test but she was hard to read. If the results showed a higher risk we would still consider the genetic counseling but I am not sure I would do the amnio. If our baby does have a problem we would use the information to prepare but that's it.

 Thanks.

Re: Quad Screen - Please don't flame me, I am confused.

  • I did not have it b/c I had a NT scan & early screen bloodwork.

The quad screen is the same 3 things they test for with the bloodwork that goes with the NT u/s plus AFP levels.

So, instead of the quad screen I just had the AFP level drawn.

No reason to repeat the other 3 levels.

  • I did the quad screen but that was it.  No matter, it would not have changed anything, but it would be nice to be mentally prepared to some degree.
  • I did ALL testing offered. I wanted to be prepared just in case. I just found out a friend's baby has Down Syndrome.....she refused all testing and now this. I would much rather be prepared. I was not high risk and there are no family genetic issues, but I still wanted to prepared b/c you just never know....

    GL with your decision......

  • We did it just because twins are high risk. Luckily our risk went down after the test.
  • We decided to not do the quad screen (no blood work or u/s).  Just like you we were low risk with my age and no family history.  We decided we would not have wanted the amnio and would not terminate so why make myself worry if the blood word came back with higher risk since there are so many false positives.  I agree that I would like to prepare myself if the baby did have problems but I assumed anything major would be discovered during the 20 week anatomy u/s.  I think whatever you decide will be OK.  But if you do not want the blood work do not feel like you have to get it.

  • we skipped all of that testing (NT scan, quad screen, etc.).  we knew we would not do an amnio and we would not change anything and we also felt we would rather enjoy the pregnancy and not worry about any "potentially increased risk" of such and such.  that was just us, and i think we are in the minority.

  • I did not do it. My OB/GYN says the results can be off for more than one baby, and he felt with my age and lack of family history of birth defects that the likely follow-up amnio was not worth the risk.  We would have kept the babies no matter what, and my NT scan ended up showing everything was fine.
  • Thanks for your responses -- I appreciate them. I am leaning towards doing the test, I like to be prepared but I felt like maybe I was being my normal over-analyzer, worrier self. I am glad to hear that other girls decided to go ahead with the test just to be prepared.
  • I did all of the testing..it was covered by my insurance and I just wanted to prepare myself had something been wrong..would I have changed anything, no, but I wanted to ready if there was and have the best resources available, if need be.
  • I had the NT scan last Monday and will have the quad screen next week. Everything from the NT came back great, but my doc rec. the quad screen anyway, and insurance covers it, so I'm doing it.
  • We are only did the NT scan (this week) since we are having twins and they don't recommend the bloodwork when you are having multiples at my clinic because the results sometimes come back with a false positive.

We will do the big u/s and if there are any determined issues we would consider an amino just to be prepared.

  • we skipped it b.c we wouldn't have done anything either way.  the big u/s is pretty accurate as far as picking up potential problems, so you would have half of your pregnancy to prepare if there was something like down's to think about. we skipped the early stuff because we knew the big u/s would give us plenty of time to "get used to" whatever we needed to.
  • Why would anyone flame you for this post? Totally reasonable question and on this board people don't get flamed for asking questions!

We didn't do the entire thing because we had the NT scan and bloodwork at about 12 weeks, but we did do the screening for neural tube defects.

If you feel like you would want information to be prepared, it can't hurt to do it, and then you could make the decision about the amnio based on the results. Your big u/s should also tell you a lot-- is that coming up soon?

  • we did not. I told my RE we would not terminate and he said since the NT scan looked great, not to worry.
