Success after multiple failed IUIs with injectables?

I’ve been doing injectables (Follistim), trigger shot, back-to-back inseminations, and progesterone for four cycles now and I still haven’t gotten pregnant despite multiple mature follicles and great numbers from hubby every time. I feel like this is never going to work for us.

Anyone else with unexplained infertility go through more than 4 IUI cycles with injectables? How many cycles did it take before you got your BFP?

unexplained since january 2015; one prior loss
miracle baby boy born march 2016
ttc #2 since january 2017; one loss in april 2017
started injectables and IUI in may 2018
IUIs #1-4 = BFN
laparoscopy november 2018 = minor endo removed from right tube
IUI #5 = BFN.
IUI #6 = chemical pregnancy
IUI #7 = BFN
IUI #8 = ?

@dkv713 I haven’t done injectables, only Femara so far, but my REs office suggests doing 3 IUIs then going to IVF. What does your RE suggest?

  • My RE would have allowed me to move on to IVF after my second failed cycle, but since my insurance only covers IUI I’ll be sticking to those until I can afford IVF.

  • Maybe go to the pregnant after IF board and post there and see if anyone has been in your situation. I hope you get your BFP soon!

My insurance doesn't cover anything so after 3 IUIs we'll be going to IVF.
  • If your insurance is covering your full IUI cycles (including meds and such) I'd try two more times. But after that, I'd start considering IVF. After 6 IUIs the chances of success are slim - at least that's what my RE told me.
  • Both my "successful" IUI's ended in CP but for me IUI's have been more "successful" then IVF.  I've now done ~7 2 with Clomid, the rest with Follistim.  I did 2 IVF's as well- both BFN but my doctor said we are better suited for IUI and some people just do better staying in the body.

I've also heard that about 6 is the number but others have had luck later.  Listen to your body and trust your intuition and your doctor.  If your insurance is covering IUI thats awesome and it's much less invasive then IVF (IMO) so why not! :) Good luck lady!
