Gestational Diabetes October

Hello ladies. Thought I’d get this going since I’m sure there will be more of us soon enough.

Just to kick off let’s discuss any positives you’ve found in having GD!

In my case, it’s that I’ve lost 15lbs so far.

What is currently on top of your “first thing I’m going to eat after giving birth” list?

Mine changes often but this week it is Pad Kee Mao. I’m dying for rice noodles but rice and I are not friends right now.

Re: Gestational Diabetes October

  • I have my test on Friday, 3 hours, but I already know my results (self track my blood sugar and it’s not good). As a positive I eat healthy anyways so I basically make minimal changes to my diet, another weird positive is that since my babies tend to have IUGR it tends to make them a bit bigger. I will definitely miss ice cream and sweet potato’s

  • I’ve found a couple of ice creams that I’ve been okay with. Halo Top is everyone’s favorite but I think it’s grainy. Chilly Cow has been great.
  • Third time around with GD... @madreofdragons I agree with you about the graininess- haven’t heard of Chilly Cow- will have to look harder!

Cant wait to not worry about numbers! Really want an Italian sub with extra pickles and a good bread
  • I definitely agree with the graininess. I was excited to try the oatmeal cookie flavour and was kind of disappointed.  I miss my
Häagen-Dazs and it doesn't help watching DH enjoy his ice cream.

It's my second time around with GD and I just started insulin the other night. Even though last time I took insulin before each meal and at bedtime, I'm still struggling to give myself insulin. It's like I tuned out those memories from 3 years ago and I have to psych myself up for like 5 minutes each time now. I'm sure it will get better because it did last time but ugh I hate needles.
  • I think I have tried ever flavor of Halo Top (weight loss surgery back in early 2017 meant that I needed to find a “good” ice cream alternative). If you let the Halo Top thaw a bit (think about making it into ice cream soup), the grainy texture all but disappears.

  • Not me, psyching myself up makes me take longer, I’ve just got to shove it in there like a dart. I’ll take the insulin shots over the fucking finger pricks any day. My fingers are getting all calloused.

My sugars have been a jerk all day. Just one of those random days that it hates everything. Usually I can eat about anything at breakfast. Dinner I can never get away with anything. Pretty sure I’ll end up on insulin for dinner.
  • Sorry jump in on this thread, when do you take a test for GD? FTM mom here and I haven't heard anything from my doctor about this
  • @bhou Typically around 28 weeks. Last time I got the drink at the appointment before, and had to drink it before I came in. Some make you take it there, just depends on the practice I believe.
  • @katamca
Thanks for clearing this up! Thought I had just blanked at an appointment or something! LOL
  • @madreofdragons @kcl283 @lifeislove87 and anyone else of course.

    How are you ladies doing?
How has the sugar management been going?

  • I've been getting in the grove of injecting at nighttime and finally have my fasting numbers good. They are starting to creep up a bit so I am expecting to have to up the units of insulin soon but for now all is good.

Also I am happy that so far my meals have been on target and I so far don't need any daytime insulin.

  • I’ve still got a decent handle on my meal time numbers although dinner is harder to control. I’m up to 44 units at night to keep fasting where it’s needed. I’m sure I’ll be chasing the fasting numbers my entire pregnancy.

Chasing my fasting numbers was an ongoing theme last pregnancy and I am confident it will be for this one as well.
  • Started insulin last night because fasting numbers have been in the low 100s. @Venessa88 fasting are the hardest- I’m going to be chasing, too! So frustrating how it can differ pregnancy to pregnancy... on insulin with first, diet controlled with second and now back on insulin for third (and final 😉)   Good thing ladies is we’re more than halfway there!!!
  • Ugggggh. Probably will start meal time insulin next week. If I had had this with DD I so would have been one and done. Between insulin, testing and the10000 appointments this is making me not even want to try to leave the house for the next 4 months.
  • @madreofdragons I hear ya! They want me to meet with the dietician and diabetic counselor.. umm no thanks, I know what I have to do. Not to mention all the extra ultrasounds and NSTs I’ll have to factor into scheduling
  • @madreofdragons ugh! I'm sorry. It really does suck. I was hoping not to have it this time around for that exact reason. Of course I have it and likely will need mealtime insulin at some point as well.
  • They upped me to 16 Units at bed to try and get fasting numbers down. Just curious-
how much is everyone else on?
  • Forty fucking eight at night.
  • I take 18 units and it's about to go up to 20 since my numbers have crept up and are hovering at target.
  • The dumb dumbs in my FB GD group are driving me nuts. I think I’m cranky from lack of carbs but people astound me. Somebody couldn’t understand why they were “still” considered having it because her tracking app said her projected A1C is nondiabetic level. Well no shit, you’ve been taking meds and strictly limiting your carbohydrates to keep your glucose down.  :|
  • @madreofdragons... OMG! I am dying 😆 love the pic!!!
  • Hey ladies. Was just diagnosed with GD on monday. Got my meter and meal charts today. This is going to be rough... I have multiple autoimmune diseases so I'm already on a restricted diet. And I've had zero appetite this pregnancy. Lost 10lbs the first month and havent gained anything since. This is baby #3 and I've never had blood sugar issues before. But I did have preeclampsia with my last baby. This is my first girl though. My cousin has 5 kids, 4 boys 1 girl, she only had GD with her girl. So I'm wondering if there might be a link? How many other GD mamas are having a girl?
  • sorry to jump on the thread but I'm concerned about my test results from the 1 hour - my number before the test was 63 and then after the test it was 129 (with 130 being the beginning of an abnormal result).  I'm just trying to understand the results more - does this mean I am having trouble processing sugar?  I'm pretty sure my doc will make me do the three hour test but I'm trying to understand GD more. Additionally, I know I haven't been eating great this pregnancy - a LOT of carbs and sweets and protein just hasn't been my friend.  I'm trying to get myself back on track but it's been hard but I want to eat healthier even if I don't have the GD.

I'm team green this time around but GD definitely has nothing to do with what you are having. Every pregnancy is different and having gestational diabetes is a hormonal thing linked to the hormones your placenta produces which can cause you to become insulin resistant. Meaning your body will not produce enough insulin to keep your sugars on target.  These hormones happen regardless if you have are having a boy or girl.  I know woman who have had GD and had boys.

I'm terrible at explaining scientifically what GD is caused by..lol this is my best explanation.

Don't be sorry for jumping in. This is what this thread is here for.  Rest assured what you are eating won't cause GD. Having GD is related to the hormones your placenta is producing making your body become more insulin resistant. During a glucose challenge they are literally testing your body to see what it does with a high sugar dump.  Having GD will mean adjusting your diet to balance carbs and proteins to allow those sugars to stay on target. Also I should add that sometimes even eating ALL the right things will still cause those sugars to rise above target and this is when other means such as insulin or meds are introduced. It's not something you did that caused it but the way your placenta is producing hormones.

Also keep in mind sometimes the 1 hour is close like that and you can go on to do the 3 hour and pass perfectly fine.

I hope that answered..ish your question.
  • @Venessa88 thank you!! It does actually help me understand GD better.  I’m assuming like I said I’ll take the three hour and see what happens then.  Thanks!

  • Ditto on what @Venessa88 said.

I am having a girl but I didn’t have it with my other daughter. It’s a crapshoot.

Omg my fasting is FINALLY under control.. for this week. Still doing just dandy with after meals. Protein plus pasta is my favorite specialty thing. Still really missing my rice though.
