Induction experiences?

Hi - FTM 41 weeks 4 days now and they're talking induction over the weekend. I'm definitely nervous. anyone have any stories to share? Or any advice? Thanks!

Re: Induction experiences?

  • I had an induction with my first and it wasn’t bad. Labor lasted 8 hours start to finish. My advice is to keep an open mind about medication for pain and an epidural. Pitocin contractions are very painful moreso than natural contractions because they are more frequent/regular and you get less breaks. An epidural helped me save my strength for pushing. Good luck!

  • I was induced this time! Both of my daughter’s came on their own, but this babe was determined to stick it out for the long haul! Just kidding, but when my doctor offer d to schedule an induction anytime after 39 weeks, I choose 39 and 5 (both girls had been born by this time and it worked well for arranging family to be in town and to allow me time to be home by the day my oldest started Kinder).

I had been having prodromal labor for weeks, and baby was low, but when I checked in, I wasn’t really contracting. The doctor broke my water (sweet relief!) at 7:32 pm and contractions started around 8 pm. They steadily increased and at 11:25 i was unable to catch a break from the contractions and when the nurse checked me, I was only 8 cm so I asked for a dose of Fentanyl to just help take the edge off. As soon as the nurse left the room, something changed and I started grunting and couldn’t help but bear down. When the nurse came back, she heard me and asked “are you pushing?” And I replied “I’m not meaning to!” She called for the other nurse and the doctor to come in as I realized what was happening: my baby was coming! Somehow, I was able to get my head around the pain and my freak out and take control of my pushing. At 11:37 pm, my sweet boy was born! Complication and medication free. It hurt like the dickens, but not any more than my other spontaneous births! 😉

I was very nervous about an induction, but because my body was pretty ready, it worked quickly and I am actually super thankful we choose to induce because he had a nuchal cord and a knot in the cord. I’m just so thankful he was born safely and without complication - that’s the only thing that really mattered to me!
