I remember someone talking about wanting this to be a reoccurring thread, and since some of us are already seeing snow (and ice started to slowly panic about having a newborn in Canadian winter), I’ve decided to start a check in #2
Hey! Canadian here - I am full blown panic about the weather - I am 40 mins easy to the hospital we are hopefully delivering at...in the snow belt. Which could easily end up in road closures...as they normally due around February! How do you have a backup plan if the roads are closed??
I live in the country, 30 minutes down the highway from the hospital in good weather. I have four different neighbours who are retired police officers. If I go into labour in a snowstorm before DH gets home, I'll be calling on one of them!
I'm loving the weather right now and trying to enjoy it before the ground gets treacherous. But every chilly morning is a reminder that these days are numbered. I can't wait to be shovelling snow at 38 weeks. Not.
I live 10 minutes away from the hospital, but we have to go on a bridge which can be quite scary in the winter time. I’m really hoping it will be a mild winter!
We live in the country about 30 minutes from hospital on a good weather day. Last time with DD she was due in September so we had no worries and DH could realistically get me there faster than 30 minutes. Being due in February this time makes this different. I already told DH that I swear if I have a car is in the ditch snow baby I will freak.
I was induced with DD so maybe this will all be a non issue.
Ah the snow. Such joys. DD was born in Jan on the comdest day of the year. Were about 20 min from the hospital but with snow it could easily be 45-60 min. Fingers crossed we all get there with no snowstorm! That being said.. ive already started my xmas shopping. Almost done DD. I’m having twins so figure closer to I wont want to walk around the mall.
Last year I did all my Christmas shopping on Black Friday which was amazing because everything was delivered to my house (well most things because I’m rural not everyone delivers to our area). The only downside was Canada post leaving a large flat screen TV on our doorstep in -40 weather. I think I’ll do that again this year as well
Yay! This is a great idea for a reoccurring thread. I’m luckily only 5 minutes away from the hospital, which is really nice. What I am more worried about is walking around in December-February and trying not to fall. I’m in northern Ontario, and we get lots of ice. I’m sure I’ll have to move my daily walks to an indoor track, but I’m nervous already about just walking from my parked car if I can’t see the ground
@mommin135 my first daughter was born in May so I was pregnant in the winter. I was always worried about that too. I always walked so slowly/cautiously and wore really good boots instead of dress boots)
I had all intentions to wait until black friday.. but I got too excited and started earlier ha. There are. A few things I’m leaving for black Friday though. And stockings will probably be later on too
Definitely waiting to do a lot of shopping black friday weekend and boxing day as well. Not even thinking about Christmas though lol mostly just baby stuff.
Thankfully I am 15min from hospital in an urban area... And I work there lol. Mostly I worry about driving safe and not falling on ice I was hoping to avoid buying maternity friendly winter gear and making do with what I have but I think I'm gonna cave.
Also this is dumb but I'm stressing about not being able to get out of the house once baby is born due to the weather? Not for big outings just little walks around the neighborhood for a change of scenery and to preserve my health and sanity lol. Any STMs who had winter babies in the past have any tips? Is baby winter gear worth the buy?
For reference it usually ranges from 0 to -20 during winter here, lots of snow. Not Northern Ontario I know Cold is relative.
@changadee I’m also worried about that! And with the weather changing so much recently, I really don’t live in an area with winter weather that’s much worse than the rest of Ontario (locals will never admit that though). I moved up here from the snow belt area of Ontario and that is probably worse to deal with! But -10 or -40.... both seem too cold to have a baby outside for periods of time? Am I gonna be stuck inside until spring?!
edited to add: clearly a ftm with no idea what babies can handle lol
I know wind chill on bare faces is a concern, but otherwise there is winter gear that makes it totally safe. FTM but my family is full of winter babies! My sister swore by using a carrier and a coat extension. I love winter though, so I may be a bit more intrepid than most.
I had DD in January and we got out a lot. Not necessarily for log walk but wven to the mailbox helped. As long as they are bundled up its good for them to be in the cold. I mean if its -20 and windy maybe skip it but there will be more days then you’d think to get out.
