Baby Names

Is Natalie Too Popular?

I've been leaning towards the name Natalie for DD2 but the only thing really holding me back is that it seems like a more popular name based on the baby name websites. Is it really that popular though? I don't know many Natalies IRL.
FWIW I'm considering the middle name Cora. We could also swap them and do Cora Natalie. In the end, we're not going to decide her name for sure until she's born, but I was hoping for some reassurance that Natalie isn't a crazy popular name.
DD1's name is Brooke, which I really love since it's not very popular but it's not a weird name either. So I'd love to find a similar name for DD2 that's normal but not super common.

Re: Is Natalie Too Popular?

  • Where does it fall on the name list? It doesn’t seem too popular in my area.
    DD1: June '16 DD2: March ‘19 :::: Married since 2011 :::: USN Wife ::::
  • @meggyme Nameberry lists it as #36 in 2017. Baby Center says it's #40-something in 2018. I was surprised it was on the list of 100 most popular names since I haven't heard it very often.

  • Here. You can look up the popularity by state.

    I wouldn't worry too much unless you have a common last name.
  • Natalie was #36 nationally in 2017 which makes it less than 0.3% of girls born. So if you sent her to an all girls high school of 1000, you’d expect about 3 Natalie’s in the school.  There’s a good chance she might be the only Natalie you know. I feel like it’s pretty popular but the only one I can think of is a coworker’s 3 year old.

    I think it’s a great name, love the Natalie Cora combo and think it goes well with sister Brooke.
  • Thank you guys so much! That helps a lot. @Bringmemylongswordho That's a good point about our last name. It isn't common at all.
    @mb0112 I was trying to figure out exactly what the name popularity meant, so thanks for explaining it.

  • Natalie Cora is wonderful
  • I love the name Natalie, reminds me of the actress Natalie Wood. It's not popular where I live, CT. The only other Natalie I know is my Aunt-in-Law and she's in her late 40s. I think Natalie Cora is a very pretty name.

  • I really like Natalie Cora! I only know one adult Natalie and one 5-yr-old Natalie, and it definitely doesn’t feel trendy. It’s a great fit with Brooke also (fwiw I don’t love Brooke and Cora together as much, and Cora does have a more trendy feel).
  • Natalie Cora is lovely! I teach preschool and have only had ONE Natalie in almost 10 years of teaching.
  • Natalie is a classic name to me and works at every age. I don’t think it’s crazy popular.
