Questions for experienced mamas

Hey everyone! I have a couple questions for you ladies who have "been there, done that" with this whole pregnancy thing....

1. I have my first doctors appointment this Thursday. I recently switched my OB/GYN due to a change in my insurance. I have only seen her once for my annual checkup, before I was pregnant. She was nice, I guess. I didn't LOVE her. And I've heard some negative stories about her, but of course also some very positive stories. With that being said, I'm not 100% sold on her. I think you can interview different OB/GYNs am I right? Should I have done that BEFORE my first appointment? Can I switch doctors AFTER that appointment? How do I go about doing this? Just call an office and ask if we can sit down and meet with a doctor? I am under an HMO so I have to stay within the same network, but I have a huge variety of doctors to choose from within that network.

2. What would you ask these doctors? What was most important to you throughout your pregnancy and delivery? What maybe are some things to ask that a newbie like myself wouldn't think to ask? Right now I can't think of anything that would sway my opinion. I'm thinking it will just be a vibe that I get?

3. I am having crazy food aversions. I don't want to eat ANYTHING. The things I do force down I want to throw back up immediately (I don't because I hate to throw up.). These things that I eat are definitely not healthy (like McDonalds, donuts, taco cheese dip...) and I hate that I am not being healthy for myself or my baby especially since this wasn't my diet pre-pregnancy. Not quite sure what to ask here, but any advice?

Thanks ladies!

Hi!  First, you might want to change your username so you're more easily identified.  I think there's instructions in the Board Organization post.  These are also great questions for the FTM Questions for STM+ Thread. Here's the link:    https://forums.thebump.com/discussion/12734196/ftm-questions-for-stm#latest

As for your questions, yes, you can interview or seek out a new OBs at any point - even following an appointment.  I think you'll need to schedule an appointment to meet a doctor, but that probably varies by doctor and office.  I switched OBs at 20 weeks (not due to any issue of the doctor - my OB just stopped delivering babies, so I had to) and I was able to meet the other docs in the practice if I so chose. Luckily I loved the first one they scheduled me with so I stuck with him.

As for questions to ask, if you know you want something specific in terms of labor and delivery, ask them their views on those things. Some people ask about their induction and/or C-section rates if having one/avoiding one is important.  But really, see how attentive they are to you and figure out if they will be seeing you for appointments or if a NP/midwife/other OB may be seeing you. My OB also teaches so there's always a med student along (I've always consented to them being there). I'd also find out if your OB is likely to deliver you or if it'll be an on-call doctor.  I'm in a small town and there are 4 delivering OBs at the hospital, but unless my OB is marked off the schedule due to a vacation, etc, he will be delivering.

As for the food aversions, you'll find you're in good company. Don't stress too much about the unhealthy food. Eat what you can when you can and take your vitamins. It'll also should get better over time (fingers crossed!) and then you can back on track with the healthy food.

  • Welcome! So you are absolutely allowed to switch at this point in your pregnancy. Sometimes you just don’t mesh with who you met with so before you get too far along, it’s a good time to explore if you want. When you call another OB, you can ask if you need to make a specific type of appointment to just meet with the doctor. Every office is different.

As to what to ask, it really depends on what is important to you. If you have a specific idea for what you want your birth plan to be, then you may want to ask about that. I’m high risk so I have a very specific set of questions I’ll be asking at my appointment on the 24th. Everyone and every pregnancy is so different so it’s hard to tell you what to ask.

And finally, if you’re feeling sick all the time you can talk to your doctor about anti nausea medication or if you don’t like that, you can try using ginger mints/candy to relieve the nausea before you eat. Being healthy is important but eating fast food from time to time wont hurt your baby. Don’t beat yourself up about the small things.

    Hope this helped somewhat!
  • I had an aversion to all food with DD. I did not want to eat anything and ended up losing 15 lbs in the first trimester. I ended up finding a breakfast that I could live with oatmeal and banana and then adding an Ensure shake everyday. I felt like at least I was eating something relatively healthy. I literally forced myself to eat most of my pregnancy. With the exception of ice cream (which I ate everyday the 3rd tri), nothing that I normally liked to eat was good to me. Once in awhile i would get a random fried chicken craving, but that was it. Be gentle with yourself, all of this is normal.
  • I truly wouldn't worry about your diet. Your prenatals are taking care of your nutritional needs. Eat what you can tolerate.

  • I can't really answer questions 1 and 2 because things can be so different in Canada when it comes to medical care.

As for your diet: don't stress. Eat what you can. Take it one day at a time. And don't beat yourself up over the food choices you can manage right now. Try to remember your prenatal (I suck at remembering it...) and be assured that your baby will get the nutrients they need. It would be worse to not eat at all than to eat the foods you can manage that might not be the healthiest for you. First tri will pass and though the nausea may not, things will get easier eventually.
