Thickened Nuchal Fold

I had my first ultrasound last week at 13 week, and was informed yesterday that the nuchal fold is thicker than they would like. I went in for blood work today, and I am waiting for an appointment for another ultrasound with a high risk doctor. I don't know when my ultrasound will be yet, and was told that it will probably take 2 weeks to get the results for my blood work. I'm not sure as to the exact measurement as the nurse didn't say. She said it may be due to a chromosomal/genetic abnormality (such as those that cause Down's Syndrome) or it may be nothing. I hate not knowing and the wait is driving me crazy, even though I've only known for about a day. I've been nervous eating, which I haven't done in years. I want all the sweets and salty snacks right now. Has anyone else been through something like this?

Re: Thickened Nuchal Fold

  • *lurking from July* wanted to share my story with you because I too wanted reassurance that others had experienced this and had had a healthy baby.

this happened at my 13 week scan as well. It’s really scary to think about the what ifs, but yes it can also mean nothing and my baby was born completely healthy! There can be a lot of false positives with that scan.
Right after the u/s we saw a genetic counselor who informed us what the extra fluid can sometimes be linked to. DH and I were so upset at the possibilities. I had an amnio done at 18 weeks and all of the results came back negative!
During the waiting period it helped me to think that I would love the baby no matter what.
    Try to stay positive!
  • @julianne0 Thanks so much for the reassurance.  The waiting is really the worst part for me right now.

  • @Gasbarro2011 The waiting and not knowing is a agonizing, but as @julianne0 said, try to stay positive and not think of all the what ifs. Focus on your health and love on that little baby <3 I didn't have an NT scan, but my NIPT results came back suggestive of a chromosomal abnormality so I am also in the painful throes of waiting (have an amniocentesis in 2 weeks, and the results 2 weeks after). What bloodwork did you have done? Was it a NIPT screening? I've seen a lot of people get their results sooner than 2 weeks, so hopefully you won't have to wait too long. Sending you all the positive vibes and patience while you wait *hug*
  • @navete I'm so sorry you've had to go through the amniocentesis.  I dread even the thought of having to do one.  I hope your results are good and everything is okay.  I did the NIPT today and will have a specialist ultrasound in the next week or two.  Hugs to you too.
  • @Gasbarro2011 similar waiting game here! I came back a carrier for spinal muscular atrophy and my husband has to get tested as well because if he happens to also be a carrier, there’s a higher probability our child will have this disease. It’s a 14 BUSINESS day wait (and we did testing over Labor Day so even longer). The wait has been grueling, but I keep positive by telling muself that the odds are low and if this curveball were to be thrown at us, it’s because god/the universe knows it’s what we need and we are ready for it. I am sure you’ll be just fine. Hang in there during the wait and try not to think about it! These things happen all the time and more often than not they result in a healthy baby!!!!
