Pregnant with Paraguard AGAIN

This is my second time being pregnant with Paraguard.  The first time I had it in for about 4 years and it was placed perfectly and BOOM ...pregnant!!   After that my doc said there was like almost zero% chance I could possibly get pregnant again with Paraguard...what are the chances right??? So I tried it again.  I am not good a taking pills and I dont like hormones so this seemed to be the way to go!    Well I took three pregnancy tests this weekend and they are all positive.  I have to wait until 9am to call and make appt because it was a long holiday weekend.   I have had this IUD in place for a year and 3 months.   Have you ever heard of anyone getting pregnant not once but twice on IUD!?

I have not, but I also don't know many people who would choose to go back to the exact same method of birth control that had already failed for them once.  There are other IUDs that you could try, or other non-pill BC methods.  I'm a little surprised your doctor was super cool with you just going straight back to a method that clearly didn't work for you previously.
This is where I'm at. And your doctor's statement that there's an "almost zero percent chance that I could get pregnant again with Paraguard" doesn't make sense to me. What is he saying about its efficacy the first time? The Paraguard is supposed to be around 99.2-99.4% effective. It was supposed to be an "almost zero percent chance" the first time.

You getting pregnant on the Paraguard once doesn't make it less likely to happen again. It's just as likely to fail again as it was the first time. The effectiveness of it doesn't increase once you've gotten pregnant on it once. It's like if you've had three girls and are wanting a boy. Your odds of having a boy don't increase with every new girl. Every time, it's a 50/50 shot.
  • Also, has your doctor looked into whether you might have a bicornuate/heart-shaped uterus, or has it been mentioned in previous pregnancies? IUDs can be much less effective for people with that.
