Ask a STM week of September 3

FTMs asking STMs any and all questions.

Re: Ask a STM week of September 3

  • I have an oddly specific question for you, STMs! When a toddler is in a rear facing convertible seat, do their legs not get cramped because of the car's seat? As in, where do their legs go?!

    Thanks!

  • My son just turned two and he's pretty tall. Since we switched him, his legs have gone from having feet not touching the back to resting comfortably on the back to a slight bend/akimbo posture with his legs now.  He's been rear facing since about 9 months because he got too tall for his carrier about then.  Pretty soon that bend in the knee will be too much and we'll have to turn his seat around!
  • That makes sense, thanks @sjnsjnsjn
  • @becks_726 there are convertible car seats for taller toddlers that have more space for height.
  • We have an extend2fit, so as my toddlers legs grow I’ll be able to extend the base to give her some extra leg room. It also has high limits for rear facing which will let her stay rear facing longer (if that’s your goal)
  • How do you know what to dress the baby in, especially when going outside? Is there a good rule of thumb? For instance, when deciding what to wear on a run, the rule is to add ten degrees to the outside temp and dress for that, since you'll warm up while running. Do babies generally need to be dressed warmer, cooler, or the same as adults? Trying to figure out essentials for hiking and walks outside this spring.
  • The old school thing your grandma would say is that 10 degree thing but the post partum nurses and our ped all said dress the baby as you would dress for the weather and that that is in the old news bin.  So that's what we always did!
  • The second *that in my comment means the 10 degrees thing... :)
  • @hannahbananas11 I was always told to add one layer for baby. So if I’m wearing jeans and a long sleeve shirt, baby would be in pants, a long sleeve shirt and a jacket or hat

I was told the same thing and followed that as well.
  • I’ll probably dress baby in the same amount of layers I’m wearing. I’m always cold, so I usually wear a layer more than most people do!

  • Add one layer for baby - usually that’s a blanket.

We have rear faced until 2 and switched due to severe motion sickness for both (the screaming and puking were more of a distraction and a safety hazard). My kids are tall and could have RF longer. Kids are super flexible and don’t ever seem to get uncomfortable.

  • My DD is about 2.5 years old and 36(ish) inches tall and hasn’t complained much about RF. She either sits crisscross or with her legs hanging over the sides.

Theres a really great Facebook group, Car Seats for the Littles. I tell everyone I know who needs help finding a car seat that’ll work for their car, kiddo, and price point to look them up. Super helpful people.

As as far as dressing baby, I was always told to add a layer to whatever you’re wearing.
  • Kids are super flexible, and they don't ache the way adults do if we stay in an odd position or "sleep wrong" lol. DD did everything from criss cross to legs straight up in the air against the seat back and never complained. They figure it out.

When baby is still super small dress slightly warmer than yourself. Usually a hat and blanket. After checking to see if baby feels too hot/sweaty or too cold to the touch for what you dressed him in for a little while, you'll get the hang of it. Hope that made sense.
  • @kayjay44- that sounds awful omg! Poor kiddos and poor you!
  • They're pretty flexible when they're that young. You'd be amazed at the way babies and toddlers can get comfortable. My toddler just kind of folds her legs up when she's rear facing, and it doesn't seem to bother her at all.

Dress newborns slightly warmer than you would yourself. As they get older you'll find you don't need to follow that rule, and can dress them as you would dress yourself. I was always told to add a layer for newborns, and that's what I did. We'll have newborns in the winter, so hats and the like will be necessary. My first was a summer baby, but if she'd been a winter baby too I probably would have done -Onesie with long pants and socks, long sleeve shirt with warmer pants, jacket and hat, and if necessary another pair of socks.

My first was a summer baby, though, so she spent most of her early months in onesies because it was like 100 degrees here (and old ladies still insisted she needed a hat lol)
