Has anyone ever measured a week behind?

So baby is measuring a week behind on ultrasound. I wasn't tracking my ovulation with my first, but I was with this one, so I know I didn't ovulate early. Heartbeat is good at 143. No one is particularly concerned except me of course, and I can't stop looking up reasons why it could happen. Can you share your stories please if this has happened to you, and what the outcome was? Looking for positive outcomes obviously, but want the truth too. Thanks!

Re: Has anyone ever measured a week behind?

  • How were you tracking your ovulation? Perhaps it was off by a day or two? I never tracked my ovulation, but have always tracked when my periods were and have sex so rarely (haha sorry hubs) that we can easily pinpoint when we conceived. That being said, I always measure at least a week (this time 2) behind what we figure the due date would be. Happened with the first two pregnancies and everything turned out fine! I know it’s hard, but try not to sweat it! Fingers crossed that everything works out for you! ❤️ Wish I could give you a more scientific  answer!

  • With my last pregnancy I was tracking my cycles and guessing ovulation from that. The first ultrasound baby was measuring 13 days behind, which of course caused me to freak out. I thought there’s no way I could’ve ovulated that late, and I didn’t think the timing for my BFP was possible. Nothing seemed like it could possibly be right and I expected the worst. And then at 39 weeks I had a perfectly healthy 9lb baby boy. So yeah, it’s highly probable everything is fine. Once you’ve had an ultrasound and heartbeat chances are extremely low that something will happen.
  • Thanks for your replies! I was using ovulation tests, and I'm getting the same feeling that this can't be right. But hearing other people's positive stories makes me feel better, so thank you!!!! Everything else is coming back great, so I probably just need to have a little more faith. Thanks again!
  • I wouldn't worry so much.  The only way to know when you ovulated is by temping.  OPKs are not always accurate.  Some cycles i can't even turn one positive even tho my temps clearly indicate that I ovulated, and sometimes mine turns positive several days before or after I ovulated.

  • Ultrasounds are extremely inaccurate measures. The margin of error in measuring by ultrasound is 1.2 weeks. In other words, they cant really tell the difference between week 7 vs 8 vs 9. So it’s really not something to worry about at this point.
  • @samott I’m in the same boat. Clearblue ovulation predictor gave me peak days of 7/20 and 7/21, putting me at what I though was 6w6d. U/s said 6w1d, and of course I didn’t track if we did the deed after my peak days. Doc wasn’t concerned but it hasn’t helped my anxiety. Next appt isn’t until 9/19, ugh.
  • @bhoop941 Not happy you're in the same boat as me, but nice to hear I'm not alone. It's funny because my first was an "if it happens it happens" baby, and this time around I was looking to be more prepared, but now I'm thinking maybe ignorance is bliss. My next one is the 17th, hoping this will be an afterthought for both of us very soon!
  • I measured a week behind as well with my son. I knew it wasn’t right but they kept telling me a week behind the entire pregnancy. It turns out he was just a small baby. I had him at 38 weeks and he weighed 5lbs 0 oz. There was nothing wrong with him, just that he was small. He isn’t small anymore though, he’s on the top of the charts for height and weight.
  • I also measured behind with both of my previous (healthy) pregnancies, they both came a little early as tiny 6lb babies but fully healthy! So I really do think it is normal, just as every person is different we can’t expect them to all be exactly the same in there! And you actually might appreciate a smaller baby when it comes time to push ;)

This statement is incredibly offensive to women who have had growth restricted babies, like me.  I would have given anything for a healthy 10lb full term baby.

OP, here’s my story.  He measured a week behind at my first and second dating ultrasounds.  By the anatomy scan, he measured 4 weeks behind.  By the time he was born, he was 6 weeks behind.  Things were not fine and he had a serious genetic disorder.

  • @SpongeWorthy I'm very sorry for the painful challenges you've had to endure with the birth of your LO. :'( I can really see how seemingly flippant discussions about ideal birth weight 'for pushing' could hit a nerve.

I really think @cahales was talking only about variations in healthy, normal birth weight, though. I didn't view her comment as offensive. We all want healthy babies for all, and ache for the LOs and families that face challenges.

@samott I don't have any personal experience, but it sounds like things are going pretty well if no one on your care team is worried. Also, if you're thinking an ovulation day error might explain this, it would be later than you calculated, not earlier. Did you continue to use your OPKs after you got the positive OPK test? You can get multiple OPK peaks in the same cycle. Let us know how things go at your next US!

Of course, nothing is guaranteed and that's an anxiety we all share.
  • @SpongeWorthy I am so sorry your experience resulted in a genetic disorder, I certainly did not mean to offend you in any way and I feel awful that I clearly hurt you. I am sorry. I did not mean for OP to hope for a low birth weight; I was just trying ease her anxiety, but I see how that came out wrong.
  • Thanks everyone for your own personal experiences. I've come to the realization I have no control over this, so I'm going to stop worrying and start thinking more positively. I'm not doing myself any favors by thinking of the worst possible outcome. I will update after my 12 week appointment!
  • My little one is measuring about 4-5 days behind, and has been since my 5 week u/s. No one is concerned in the least, and they said a variation of even a week is completely normal and no cause for worry. Every baby and every pregnancy is different. And there’s a good chance he or she will more than catch up in the coming weeks!
