We had the best luck with Avent bottles. Little one had no issues switching back and forth between breast and bottle with that type, we did introduce that bottle at about 4 days old though so might have helped. Nuk and Tommy Tippy seemed to lead to more gas and spit up.

The only bottles mine would take are the Dr Brown anti colic. I hated cleaning all the parts, but oh well. Every other brand resulted in gas and reflux and hours of screaming.

I’m a little overwhelmed by all of the different sizes/nipple options for the bottles. How many, and what size, do you actually need? I’ve heard to get a few different brands in various sizes because you don’t know what your baby will like, and was thinking of trying avent, playtex and tommie tippee but I’m just not sure how many I need and what sizes.

DD liked the Avent, ComoTomo, and Koran Kanteen. She did not like Tomee Tippee (though I know many people who swear by them)

@firsttimespartanmom for the first few months at least usually the smaller size bottles (4-5oz) should be good.

This is another one of those “it depends on the baby” things. DD1 would take any bottle and did fine with any bottle. DD2 had terrible reflux and was colicky and did best with Dr. Brown’s or Nuk.

I recommend registering for a variety, but NOT opening all of them up front - I made that mistake, lol, and ended up with like 5 of 5 different brands. Which was fine for DD1, but would be annoying if you had a picky baby who only took 1 brand, and they maybe liked the first brand you tried. My girls never took more than 4 oz at a time, but I know a lot of people didn’t get much use out of the 4 oz bottles and wished they would have skipped them.

From what I understand, if baby takes breast milk in a bottle, you likely won't need any bottles bigger than 6 oz or so. If baby takes formula in a bottle, you'll likely need larger/taller bottles as baby gets bigger. The nutrients in breast milk change over time to meet baby's needs, and that means you likely won't have to increase how many ounces you give the baby per bottle. However, with formula, you'll need to increase the ounces as the baby grows, so you'll need bigger bottles.
I would recommend just getting one or two types of bottles. If those don't work, you or your SO can easily run out to Target to grab a different type. In my opinion, it's easier doing it that way than having to worry about keeping receipts around and returning bottles you might not need.

DD wasn't picky with bottles. Since we were gifted NUK brand pacifiers, we used NUK brand bottles and it worked for us.

Get one of these baskets for the dishwasher! They are so handy.

We tried the joovy boob bottles in addition to breastfeeding and had good experience with them. There aren't parts with hard crevices to clean and did pretty well in the leak department. We'll be using them this time around too, just will need to update the nipples/seals.

We started with the Kiinde system which has nipples and a frame that the bags of BM pop into. DD would kind of eat from them but had trouble latching with it so we tried a Comotomo bottle and it was history. They are expensive, however, so I made sure to find the cheapest sets on Amazon and/or use my 20% off BuyBuyBaby coupons. The Comotomo has a really wide nipple for latching and is super easy to clean but it can be heavy for a baby to hold by themselves for a while. Also, the bottle lid/cap needs to be on before screwing it on to the bottle or they have a tendency to leak. She had no trouble with nipple confusion.

Hopefully they work for DD2 too!

I read about that!!!

ok so we aren’t supposed to put bottles in the dishwasher or microwave because the heat causes the harmful chemicals to leak out...

BUT somehow we are supposed to sterilize our pump parts and bottles, what, daily? How the bleep are we supposed to do that while not getting them as hot as a dishwasher or microwave?

How how how?????

You don't have to sterilize that often...I think people are scared into thinking it needs to be done all the time. We did it once via boiling the parts in water and just washed the bottles/pump parts normally after that... no big deal. Some people do it daily or weekly but I never thought it necessary and everyone is just fine.

I will sterilize again when I pull everything out of storage, though.

So ignorant FTM here but...we need to boil all the bottles once before using? Like can I just throw them all in a pot of boiling water for a while and call it good or is there a specific method I’m supposed to use?

It’s so dependent on the baby. My son absolutely refused bottles. We tried Dr Browns, Avent, Nuk, Tommee Tippee. It was so hard. Eventually he settled on Dr Browns but still preferred nursing.

my daughter was fine with any bottle. We stuck with Dr Browns since we had a ton from my son. We have since given them all away so I’m starting over with this baby!

So basically I have no advice hahaha.

I don't think I sterilized anything...maybe a batch of nipples, once. And I threw everything in the dishwasher eventually...not sure that article is going to change how I do things...we'll see.

We used Avent bottles and the old style Born Free bottles which were my favorite. I saved them all but I'm thinking about tossing them all and buying new stuff, not sure yet. The bottles do look kind of gross after being through the dishwasher so much and I don't think sterilizing them is going to make them look any better.

I never sterilized, per se, just threw in the dishwasher before the fist uses

And I will use the dishwasher again to wash bottles - like SO MANY other things in the early months of parenthood, you have to weigh the advice of what’s best to do with what saves your sanity when you’re sleep deprived and overwhelmed and is actually realistic.

We never sterilized. We definitely used the dishwasher and will keep using it for the kids' cups that overtake my cabinets.

DD took every bottle known to man. She didn't care what type of nipple it had as long as milk was coming out of it. So easy. DS refused every bottle and nearly caused an emotional breakdown for me when he went on a 4 day hunger strike when I went back to work. He eventually gave in and would only drink from a Comotomo. Like others have said, it is all dependent on the baby. I pray everyone has a baby who takes a bottle like a champ because there is nothing more stressful than a 3 month old who refuses to eat.

@runningyogimama I totally agree. There are so many things to already worry about when having a baby. Now I have to worry about how I clean my bottles too? UGH. The AAP also says no screens until your kid is 2. Yea... that TOTALLY happened with DD

Also, if you are OCD like me, I hated the discoloration and foggy film that milk and formula leave on bottles. I specifically buy Dapple which totally removes it! Target carries it now, too. Maybe worth a shot to revive those bottles, @lostarz14? They also make dishwasher packs.

I've been meaning to post this for a while but keep forgetting. Glass bottles seem to be getting pretty popular with the concerns about plastic, so I wanted to mention for those of you using day care, check if your day care allows glass before you purchase any bottles. Our day care does not allow glass containers, and I'm assuming it's probably a common concern at day cares in case the bottles break.
