I’m a sucker for a good animal story.

Do your dogs know you are pregnant?

STMs any advice?

With four years of infertility under our belts we have totally spoiled the dogs and I am worried about how they will adjust. They both like to lick my face and I just can’t handle it with the morning sickness!

3 legged dog knows. She lays on my lap all the time and is extra snuggly. Cat does not appear to be aware/ care.

I worried about our animals last time but we had no problems whatsoever.

Omg @flyingmombula I want to squeeze that sweet puppy!!!

My two are so completely aloof...I can say with certainty they have no clue! Our bulldog adjusted pretty well when our girls came, I assume our mastiff will adjust great as well. Both are pretty laid back.

I have a feeling we're going to have a jealous furbaby on our hands once the LO arrives, so there will probably be a lot of this pouty panda face to go around

I don't know if she can tell I'm pregnant, but she's definitely got a sense of when I'm not feeling good, and she always comes to lay next to me

My fur baby is aware and he's been extra needy and clingy with me. He always wants to be near me and have me petting him which is out of character for him. I also worry how he wi handle the baby because we have spoiled him so much and he's been the baby of the house for 12 years. But I'm hoping he will take it well.

My two are needy all the time, so I’m not sure if they can tell. They do well with my seven year old. They love little kids and licking their faces. We didn’t let them be around our oldest much as a baby bc they’d get in his face, so we might do opposite this time. Our son doesn’t care for animals, he’s finally not completely scared of them and I think sheltering him from dog kisses as a toddler could be why and I don’t want to do that again.

3 1/2 years of infertility as well. So our fur-babies are super spoiled! We didn't plan on getting the white one, but since the baby deal wasn't working out, we figure...what's 1 more? lol I think my little brown one knows something is going on, she's been needier than usual and the oldest. I figure as soon as they realize a baby = extra food...they will love it!

This is Halsey, our 8 year old pit mix. He doesn’t know yet and he didn’t really know/care until DD was mobile. He’s so good with her now, but I still keep an eye on them.

As for advice on getting them ready, I suggest working on basic obedience, so if you need them to go lay down they hopefully will. Think answering the door with baby in hands, trying to restrain a dog type scenario. Also practice not moving out of their way when you movie around the house. You want them to move out of your way because a) you’ll be tired and have your hands full and don’t want to trip if you don’t see them and b) they’ll know they need to move if they don’t want baby to chase or grab them. It takes practice to change your own habits in order to teach them new ones.

She is my little shadow so I’m pretty sure she knows. As I got bigger with DD she would always sit on me and snuggle my bump. Hopefully she’ll do that again this time, I know it sounds crazy but I think they bonded before DD was even born!

@kristimh80 that’s exactly when my dog fell in love. He used to sit by her high chair and watch the ground for stuff to fall. Now he knows where it comes from!

Somehow I missed this on Friday but I’m the biggest dog lover in the world so I had to contribute better late than never!!!! Zoey (9) totally knows. She’s a shepherd mix rescue and she’s super clingy all the time, especially lately! She’s a big mush. Sometimes I joke that she’s like having a giant cat.

And then since we are borderline crazy, we are “expecting” this little guy’s arrival on September 3rd and I couldn’t be happier!!! Backstory: I’ve been on the breeders waitlist for over a year. Found out I was pregnant and 2 weeks later they called to say I was next in line to select a pup. Go figure. DH and I talked it over and felt that 6 months before baby comes was more than enough time to get him trained and settled.... so we’re still pulling the trigger!

@indigoheightsblog it was pretty late on Friday that I started it.

Im not worried about obedienece too much, they are already pretty good, I just know it’s inevitable that they will get less attention from me than they do now. They will probably go from childlike status to more normal dog status.

Im sure eventually they will love a toddler that feeds them!

How did I miss furbaby Friday?! I'm so much more excited about this than the ultrasound thread.
This is our first baby so our furbabies have no idea what they are in for and I'm sure we are all in for a rough adjustment period.

We have 2. This one is our younger. She definitely knew before we did, laying her head on my stomach and such. I call her my baby girl, and she's very attached to me so I have a feeling that there will be some jealousy. On the other hand, she loves "little humans" and she is so good with kids. Just don't know how she'll handle a baby. Our other is older, and he did well with my nieces, so I'm not as concerned about him.

Meet Mr. Bojangles (Cat) and Harley (dog)!

Mr. Bojangles has been through this before when we had our son Jack. Before that, he got soooooo much attention. After... well, obv not as much. But he’s been a trooper and an awesome furbaby bro.

Not sure how Harley is going to deal. We rescued her back in April. She’s 3ish, and had pups not too long before she was rescued so I’m wondering as I get further along if she’ll show signs of knowing. She’ll definitley be the harder to adjust as she requires more attention.

Yesss my dog totally knows. She’s done the same thing with this pregnancy and my pregnancy with my now 2 year old. Her behavior usually makes me wonder if I even am pregnant. She constantly has to lay on my stomach and she’s at my feet 24/7.

Advice from a STM... Fortunately our dog has always loved babies and kids so with our first pregnancy I wasn’t too worried. I more worried about her emotionally having to share attention but she did alright! I think it was hard at first, she looked a bit sad sometimes but DH made sure to spend a lot of cuddle time and play with her and once a day I would take her on a walk while DH stayed with baby so she still got some good one on one time with me too. I also brought the onesie that DD wore in the hospital home for her to sniff before we brought her home. I think that helped eliminate a lot of the shock. Work with them throughout pregnancy on training as well. Even if they are well trained dogs. Just help illiterate things because I have heard of dogs who almost act out (like a big sibling would) when baby is home and attention isn’t all about them anymore.

DD is now 2 years old and her on our dog are besties. DD looooves her pup and our dog is very protective of DD. She also gets very annoyed if her sometimes... like a typical big sibling

Not sure if my fur babies know or not. The mutt we have is okay with the toddler we have so long as we let her leave when she wants and is never forced to interact with her, I think it’s best if they have their own area to get away from the baby if needed. We were most concerned about our mastiff since she does terribly with new people/dogs, and has a lot of anxiety, not to mention is clumsy. Oddly enough she immediately became or little girls best friend, and hardly ever leaves her side. We still always watch them carefully when they’re together of course, and try to make sure our daughter is respectful of the pups (no pulling, slapping, biting, laying on or trying to ride them, or getting into their food or toys). Overall I think they seem to just know that it’s a new member of the family once you bring the little one home.
