Fit Mom Friday (August Edition)

These have been few and far between. I thought trying to do it on a monthly basis might work out better. Feel free to share your healthy goals, meals, workouts here. I'd love an update on how everyone is doing with their fitness goals. Not a real check in, but some talking points are

-how have your workouts changed?
-what have you been up too lately?
-anything new that you've enjoyed (prenatal yoga, etc)?
-easy, healthy meals that are satisfying

And really anything! It can also totally be a place to complain.

Re: Fit Mom Friday (August Edition)

  • I've been pleasantly surprised this pregnancy with still being able to run at a decent pace. With my last two, I got pretty slow and running was more of a chore. I still did it, but I hated being so slow. This time I'm only about a minute off my normal pace, so it isn't too bad. I've been trying to workout 5 to 6 times a week. However if it doesn't happen in the morning, I am pretty unsuccessful at motivating myself later in the day. I have a few neighborhood friends that run with me 2 or 3 times a week and that helps me stay accountable. I suck at waking up early to workout on my own.

Meals have been pretty hit or miss. We eat out probably 2x a week for dinner. Usually once on the weekend and once during the week when sh*t inevitably hits the fan and I forget to plan something. My heartburn has just started to ramp up, so I am less motivated to cook meals. However I know my family doesn't deserve to survive off of frozen foods and DH works so much, so meal planning is on me.

  • My workouts have really decreased in both duration and activity. I've been trying to make it to the gym about 5 days a week for cardio, if nothing else. I haven't done much heavy lifting (which I miss), but occasionally my trainer still throws in box squats or rack pulls with a lightly weighted bar. My latest training plan has more strength training in it, but it still makes me feel like a wimp because we're taking it easy and doing more machines than free weights. I have had a lot of people at the gym commending me on going to the gym still and "killing it" while pregnant. Little do they know I feel like I'm completely slacking.

I'm not even going to claim that I'm eating healthy. I think I've taken this pregnancy as an excuse to eat like a 5 year old - PB&J sandwiches, mac & cheese, cheeseburgers. I realize that most of my weight gain is entirely due to poor eating and is my fault. I keep trying to eat healthier (I included chopped up chicken breasts in my last batch of mac & cheese), but it's mostly crap. :disappointed:

  • I have really struggled working out this pregnancy but finally feel like I’ve gotten back into a groove. Due to an SCH that bled every time I attempted to do pretty much anything, I was told not to work out at all first trimester. By the time second tri hit, I had lost all motivation to keep to a regular schedule, but I think I found something that’s finally helped.

The Tone It Up app has a section of prenatal workouts, and one of the founders is pregnant right now and is good about posting modifications for most moves. You can schedule classes in the app and I’ve found that has really helped me get back into a routine. The classes are usually 20-30 minutes so I feel like I’ve actually gotten a decent workout in without overdoing it. Finally feel like I’m getting some strength back!

Eating healthy is a totally different story. I can only manage carbs - toast, bagel - for breakfast - eggs make me super nauseous. Work in progress over here.
  • @firsttimespartanmom I have never heard of that app. That sounds super helpful!

@smulrich16 good for you added chicken breast to the mac. I've definitely been super loose on my diet. My heartburn has started though, so that is kind of like a built in diet for me. I can only eat so much before the acid makes me want to puke.

  • I’m doing ok!
    Monday’s- upper body
    tuesday- cardio
    wed- core
    thurs-full body strength
    fri- leg day
Saturday- yoga and stretching, though I do yoga and stretching as a cool down after every work out

Ive been sticking to this pretty well, I do all my workouts at home, following programs and do about 30-45 mins a day.

Sciatica is making cardio and leg day rather rough though, modifying quite a bit.
  • @wannaflickone Ugh! The heartburn has just started for me. It has definitely made me adjust my food intake the past week, or so.

  • Started hiking again after some bad back pain that knocked me out of commission for awhile! Wanting to start Orange Theory-- has anyone done this while pregnant?
Food has been ok.. way more carbs than I probably "should" be eating, but whatever. Starting to eat some veggies which have definitely not tasted as good as bagels, but I'm trying!
  • Working out has been pretty good. Running is all done but I’m hitting the eliptical regularly, still doing strength training once a week and yoga.

Diet, ummm not great. I’m craving carbs! And too lazy to make salads for lunch. I need more fresh veggies, I know, but I’m usually so spent by lunch time it’s like grilled cheese? Ok.

  • @eahayes I do xsport's xit program which is the same concept as orange theory other than how often they change workouts. You should be fine just make sure to ask for modifications as needed.

The last two weeks I was not feeling great and took time to rest more than anything. The heat is killing me but I am determined to get back at it. Today I did two miles on lunch (jog two minutes fast walk two minutes back and forth) which took me 30 minutes. I'm so slow but my lower back does not enjoy jogging. Also I am going to the gym for xit (interval training) tonight.

My goal is to do xit 2 times a week minimum, 30 minutes of walking every day, and yoga on non gym days.
  • I had to give up. My drs told me the only thing they want me doing is walking. It was a sad day but also came at the right time because I am in so much pain it’s not even funny. Work is hard and we’ve had to cut our nightly walks down to just around our block a couple times. My hips feel like they are going to split and nothing is giving any relief

  • I’m still running but I am soooooo slow. I’m also doing modified Jillian Michaels workout dvds but I’m also slowing down with that. I have a feeling I might be switching to walking soon which bums me out.
  • More active then first pregnancy but here in the PNW it has been hot so working out is harder. My garage is a sauna and I have done some body weight stuff like squats. I do try to walk at lunch if nothing else. Food is hit and miss depending on the day.
