How far along are you? How big is baby?

    5+3

How many kids do you already have? Ages

    DS is 14 months

How are your other kids doing this week?

We cannot get DS to go bed at a consistent time. Some days he's ready for bed at 7 and some days he won't go down until 8. He doesn't always take 2 naps during the day, which he desperately needs. DS will only go to bed if I nurse him to sleep. Once in a up moon DH can get him down by rocking/singing.

    Rants/Raves? Concerns/Questions?

I don't know how or if I will be able to wean DS before this LO arrives. I really don't want to tandem nurse, but idk how to get DS to sleep otherwise. H and I have tried everything. Any advice/suggestions?

GTKY: What do you miss most from your pre-kid life? What do you miss least

I miss going out with DH for drinks or movies whenever we want. I don't really know what I miss. Having kids is so awesome and I've always wanted to be a mom.

How many kids do you already have? Ages? 1 - DS, 3.5

How are your other kids doing this week? He's pretty great this week. We've been struggling to keep him IN his room post bedtime, but I haven't been feeling well the past two nights and he's taken it easy on me.

Rants/Raves? Concerns/Questions? DS is like...anti-dad in the AM. My morning would be so much easier if he wouldn't lose his shrimp each time I asked DH to help out with shoes or potty or whatever.

GTKY: What do you miss most from your pre-kid life? What do you miss least? I miss lazy mornings on the weekends.  Get up when I want, maybe go to the market or the beach or take the dogs for a walk. What do I miss least? That's hard.  I always have a buddy. So I don't miss being alone for meals and stuff.

  • @luckywife10 - are you opposed to CIO? How often does he nurse throughout the day?
    Lilypie Pregnancy tickers
  • @MRDCle we've tried variations of CIO and nothing has worked. I only nurse him at night and before naps on the weekends.
  • @luckywife10it sounds like your LO is probably gearing up to drop a nap and go down to just 1 nap a day.  I found this transition to be harder than going from 3 to 2. I would probably hold off on trying to change routine of going down at night till that transition has been made. Probably another month or so based on your description. Does he sleep through the night or is he still night waking? Can he go down for a nap without nursing? Do you have a solid bedtime routine? If he can go down for naps without nursing then you know he can do nighttime and you can try tackling that once the naps have solidified.  I think my LO was going down at 7:30 around 14 months and she dropped from 2 naps to 1 nap at 12 months. I was obsessed with getting her to sleep on her own and we worked very diligently to get her into the good sleeper that she is (most of the time).

How many kids do you already have? Ages

    DD, 2.5

How are your other kids doing this week?

Good - we haven't told her yet that she's going to be a big sister.  We're waiting to tell her on her birthday when I'll be 10w+6d

    Rants/Raves? Concerns/Questions?

DD is transitioning into a threenager and I'm worried once symptoms really kick in how I'll be able to handle her.  She's a wild child (my parents call her Whirlwind) and I'm anxious about what's to come. She loves taking care of her baby dolls so I think she'll be excited too. I'm just a mixed bag of emotions.

GTKY: What do you miss most from your pre-kid life? What do you miss least

Being able to go shopping without a toddler is probably the only thing I miss, it's just hard because she's into everything and is so curious. I wouldn't change being a mother for the world. I like spending time with her and doing fun kid things again.

  • @luckywife10 oof.  Yeah - we did CIO with DS before we fully weaned - maybe 16 months? We establish a very set bedtime routine, and then I would leave the house while DH let him cry - usually I took the dogs for a walk till he told me it was over.

When we finally weaned, we took our last two sessions (morning and bedtime routine) and I started setting timers 5 minutes at first.  Then we would cut back from 5 to 4, 4 to 3, etc.etc. till it was 30 seconds latched then unlatch and distract.

  • @luckywife10, that's rough, hang in there momma!  I don't really have any good suggestions.  My son nursed until he was 2, although at that point it was mostly just once before bed.  We also co-slept when he was a baby since it was the only way I could get any sleep.  Does your son take a pacifier or use a snuggy or anything for comfort?  Maybe that could slowly take the place of night nursing.

@MRDCle, I feel you on the anti-dad thing.  My son is super clingy to me first thing in the morning and late at night.  I think he knows that daddy can't function without coffee and mommy can .

@gollygeeitsamy, sounds like my wild child, haha.  It's great she likes taking care of baby dolls!  I've seen that suggested for helping new big siblings adjust and I was actually going to do it with my son too.  Telling her on her birthday will be so fun!  Make sure you get a video of her reaction!

How far along are you? How big is baby?

    4 weeks, poppyseed

How many kids do you already have? Ages

    1 son, 4 years old.

How are your other kids doing this week?

He's been great this week, other than an occasional meltdown as we get back to our everyday routine after a vacation.  We had a playdate this morning with a close friend and even though her kid and mine sometimes bump heads, they played super well together.  It's so cool seeing their imagination take flight.

    Rants/Raves? Concerns/Questions?

I'm petrified about the adjustment period.  When I'll be on maternity leave, my husband will have his busiest season of work, so I'll be at home alone for most of the time with a newborn and a 5 year old.  I have a tendency to lose my temper as it is now with DS at bedtime after a full day with him; I'm nervous how it'll be adding a screaming newborn to that.

GTKY: What do you miss most from your pre-kid life? What do you miss least?

Probably just the one-on-one time with my husband.  DS was a surprise, which obviously I wouldn't change for the world, but it means sometimes I feel like we missed out on being just a couple.  I'm sometimes jealous of DS getting my husband's attention!  I'm an introvert, and sometimes it feels like I don't get a moment to myself through the day, but honestly, when I am alone I don't know what to do with myself.

    Pregnancy Ticker
  • @kangstadt ugh I feel you on the GTKY. My husband and I were together for the blink of an eye before DS came along.  Our first trip as a couple really was our honeymoon when our son was 3, ha.

    One 2 year old boy

How are your other kids doing this week?

Good for the most part. He's struggling with listening to his teachers at school. They seem to have a harder time with it than my DH and I do.

    Rants/Raves? Concerns/Questions?

DH and I have to have a parent teacher conference about his listening issues and "no"s.  Honestly he's 2. I think their expectations are unrealistic. "Oh, he says no when you ask him to do something he doesn't want to do? Yeah. He's TWO!"

GTKY: What do you miss most from your pre-kid life? What do you miss least

Most? Hands down, no question.... Sleeping in.

Least? Having a hard time with this. Haha

How are your other kids doing this week? My 7 year old doesn’t know yet she is spending the summer with grandma, my 4 year old is very excited he is hoping for a brother and 1 year old is oblivious haha

Rants/Raves? Concerns/Questions? Not ready for my baby to be a big sister, terrified of telling everyone outside my immediate family. My MIL has pushed everyone in the fam of childbearing age to get fixed. This is the 11th grandchild for her.

GTKY: What do you miss most from your pre-kid life? What do you miss least? Being able to leave the house without dragging everyone and their mother out the door

One was sick Monday and I had to leave work to pick them up from dayhome because now the other is sick!!

    Rants/Raves? Concerns/Questions?

I started at my job a month ago and have taken off so much time already.  Then I have to tell them I'm pregnant.  I feel bad.

GTKY: What do you miss most from your pre-kid life? What do you miss least?

I miss just getting up and going.  Dinner, hiking, camping, concert, whatever.  I wouldn't trade being a mom for anything in the world though.  I'd have 10 more if it was possible.

I may have a slight obsession with names.  Sooooo......let that inform you of my opinion :D
    Lilypie Pregnancy tickers
  • @gollygeeitsamy good advice, thank you! I will start with getting him down for naps without nursing and then eventually going to bed at night without nursing. He sleeps through the night most of the time, we have a solid bedtime routine, and I nurse him to sleep for naps.

@MRDCle I'll definitely try the timer!

@kangstadt he self weaned from a pacifier before he turned 1. We bed shared with him from 2 months to 6 months. He started moving around in his sleep a lot at 6 months so no one was able to sleep ha!

@berky84 I'm dreading the "no" stage! DS will shake his head no when he knows he's doing something he's not supposed to, it's kind of cute but frustrating!
  • Right after work I told H, then I went out and taught a bootcamp class.  When I got home H was going through a list of names!!   @MRDCle @kangstadt He might need a name thread haha.

  • @luckywife10 It might be easier than you think! I weaned DD at 14 months (we were just nursing to sleep) and the day I decided to quit cold-turkey we didn't have any issues. I was shocked! Good luck!

How are your other kids doing this week?

She is doing really great this week. I think we're starting to get a little restless, though and are ready for preschool and all of our activities to start.

    Rants/Raves? Concerns/Questions?

I've been pretty vocal about being one and done so I'm nervous to tell our family and friends about this baby. Having more children is super important to DH so I agreed to one more, but I'm pretty nervous about starting over with a new baby. Our DD also does NOT want a baby brother or sister so this should be interesting!

GTKY: What do you miss most from your pre-kid life? What do you miss least

I miss being able to do whatever I want (travel, go out to eat, go to the grocery store) without the added hassle. I don't miss not getting endless amounts of cuddles every day. It's pretty cool feeling super loved all the time!

  • Alright, I'm giving in @mermaidca and @MRDCle, haha.

Welcome @Rad&Co!  My son is 4 also and has been pretty vocal about not wanting a baby... I watch my nephew two days a week, and it was very rough when he was a newborn.  I'm hoping when it's every day and not just occasionally, DS will just have to get used to it!

Ok for the most part. DS starts Kindergarten next week. DD is her normal maniacal self :).

    Rants/Raves? Concerns/Questions?

Rants, I hate my OB office. They've been very insensitive in the face of my loss last December and this new pregnancy. I was told when I conceived again things would be very different and I would have additional ultrasounds, blood work, etc. I've had to push and advocate for myself every inch of the way this time around. It's uncomfortable. If I could switch offices, I would.

Raves, I don't feel pukey  yet!

GTKY: What do you miss most from your pre-kid life? What do you miss least?

I miss sleep and getting to do what I want when I want.

Hmm that's hard. It's hard to know what I miss the least because I didn't know what it was like to have children. So ... I guess I would have not had such a rich life, which I have now.

How are your other kids doing this week?

Very sweet and loving this week

    Rants/Raves? Concerns/Questions?

I had really severe eczema during my pregnancy with DD, and I was really hoping I would avoid that this time. But it looks like my hormones are causing the same issues. I finally heard back from my doctor about a medication I can take, so at least I’ll be getting some relief.

GTKY: What do you miss most from your pre-kid life? What do you miss least

I miss consistent sleep, I miss having decent skin, and I miss being able to go out and have me time more often. I think having kids has brought consistency and a lot of love into my life, so I’m grateful for that.

She's a menace to order. She likes putting things in drawers now, but usually not things that belong there.

    Rants/Raves? Concerns/Questions?

Nausea hit this afternoon and DH gave the baby the ice cream he bought for me. Hmmmm.

GTKY: What do you miss most from your pre-kid life? What do you miss least

So, my job right now is in tourism, which means I am highly aware of ALL the cool things happening here. And I get to go to approximately 1% of them because apparently they're all during naptime or dinnertime. I miss going to these events.

On the other hand, we used to eat out a lot, and I prefer our impromptu potluck dinner parties that we've been throwing in our back yard this summer.

@MRDCle and @kangstadt - our honeymoon (after the wedding that has slid 4 months and counting) is going to be our first big trip together too. Not for lack of my trying!

Haha just hanging with me! He's crawling around and cruising around standing on furniture so he's been busy!

    Rants/Raves? Concerns/Questions?

Just nervous about having a baby with already having such a young one. We planned this and we are so excited but I'm a tad scared now that it's happening! I was very sick, pretty much bed bound, with my first so nervous about that while taking care of my lil one.

GTKY: What do you miss most from your pre-kid life? What do you miss least

I miss bringing able to go places with my husband just the two of us :) As simple as it's 9 at night and we want to run out for ice cream together. Little stuff! But obviously our son adds so much fun to our outings now. Oh and I worry so much more!

I don't miss people asking "when are you going to have kids" lol. But seriously, I don't miss wishing for kids and wondering if I'd be able to. So happy to be adding to our fam!

  • @luckywife10 I just weaned DS in June and hes 2. For months I had been trying to cut back feedings but he was not having it. I finally decided to go cold turkey. For about a week before I kept telling him he's too big for boobie and they are for babies. Then when I started in the morning and told him no more boobies, he's too big now. Surprisingly he only had a couple melt downs the whole time. I put bandaids over my nipples and told him they hurt now (which they did lol). I did all the tricks, cold cabbage, ibuprofen, milk reducing tea. It took a week for my milk to dry up, and it hurt a LOT but was so worth it. I wish I would have done it sooner!

  • How far along are you? How big is baby? 4 +2; baby is the size of a poppy seed.

How many kids do you already have? Ages? I have a 6-month old daughter.  It is WILD to be pregnant again, and to be considered a STM!

How are your other kids doing this week?  N is the happiest girl in the world.  She got her six-month check-up and shots this week, and she starts solids this morning!

Rants/Raves? Concerns/Questions?  While we did plan on joining the two-under-two club, my husband and I were NOT planning on having another baby so soon.  We're happy, but I am so sad for N - I feel like we're robbing her of being our baby.  And I find myself really hoping we're having a boy.  I worry if we have a girl, she and N will ALWAYS be lumped together, they'll ALWAYS have to share everything (clothes, toys, friends!), and they'll feel more competitive.  Not that those things would be barred from happening with a boy, but I feel like a gender difference would help people perceive them more as different people than as a package deal.  I want my kids to be close, but still to have their own identities.  Obviously we'll be thrilled with a girl too, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't have a preference!

GTKY: What do you miss most from your pre-kid life? What do you miss leastMy entire life has revolved around my desire for kids, so everything about our current situation is literally a dream come true.  But that being said, a lot of friends have distanced themselves from us since we've had N.  We don't get invited out as much (when we WOULD be willing to make the effort!) and we don't get as many people responding to our invitations.  I do miss that connection with my social circle.  They're good people and good friends, but they're at a different place in their lives.  That's all I miss though, and I'm hoping it will come back with time.

@BarefootContessa Why can't you switch OBs?  I felt completely unsupported during my first loss - *TW* it was a MMC that did not completely clear with misoprostol, and when I asked when I should come back for follow up, I was told I didn't have to.  And EVERYONE - nurses, doctors, the dang receptionists - kept asking me to repeat my agonizing MC story even though they easily should've had all the information they needed in my file. *End TW*  I switched to a new practice and later, to a team of REs.  Both took me so SERIOUSLY, were so kind and compassionate, and went above and beyond to make sure I felt safe and secure in their care - it seriously made a world of a difference.  If you can find a way to switch OBs, it really might be worth it for your peace of mind.

@elmich3 I share a lot of your concerns.  I wasn't as sick as it sounds like you were, but I remember being so TIRED and slow for all of my pregnancy - I'm worried about how that will affect my daughter.

Also, add me to the interested-in-a-book-on-two-under-two club!

  • @ashtuesday our town has a bit of a monopoly when it comes to OBs. They're all under the same umbrella network. There is one other OB in town, but my insurance provider doesn't cover them. So... unless I want to drive 1.5 hours for care... I'm sort of stuck.

  • @ashtuesday My mom and my aunt are fourteen months apart and they were and still are best friends! They were a year apart in school, but had all the same friends and did the same activities and it seems like it was never a bad thing for them!  My mom still talks about how much she loved sharing a room with her sister so close in age, it was like having a built in friend.
  • @BarefootContessa I am so sorry to hear that - that feels like it should be illegal, you should have choices!  I guess midwives or doulas typically advocate for you more in delivery itself, so is there anyone else you can bring to your appointments - your SO, mom, a friend - that could be in charge of pushing for what you need/deserve so it doesn't have to be a constant stressor on you?

@peaceinnature Thank you so much for sharing that!  Actually, tossing and turning in bed a few nights after posting about wanting a boy, I started thinking about all the good and fun that could come from two girls being so close in age... so the hormones are running strong and we'll be happy with whatever we get!
