Can we start a thread for ladies with GD?

Hi ladies! I would love to start a support thread for the women who have been diagnosed with GD. I know I have been really struggling with it and even broke down in tears recently because I felt so hungry but had no ready made options to eat.

Re: Can we start a thread for ladies with GD?

  • I'm diabetic pre-pregnancy, for quite a few years now. I'd like to see how other ladies are handling their experience with pregnancy and diabetes (GD or other).

  • I'm in! I feel like I've had it forever even though it's been a few months.
    @bfpafter4years - I have definitely cried my eyes out because of stressing over what to eat too. It is really tough!

  • @middleschoolmommy I think I might be headed for insulin injections. They doubled my dose of metaphorin a couple of days ago but it still hasn't brought my fasting number down into range. So I wanted to ask you if the injections hurt at all. I am really scare to do them.

    @bfpafter4years - I hope you don't mind me chiming in. I am no expert, but when I had my GD class with DS the teacher reminded us there were many more nerve endings in our fingers than our abdomen so if we could handle the finger pricks, we'd have no problem handling insulin if it was needed. :) Insulin may be different, but the fertility meds I had to inject in my stomach didn't hurt. Hoping the increase in metformin will start working, but if not I think the idea of insulin is usually worse than actually doing it. I think most places are really good about training and educating you on everything.

    @bfpafter4years it doesn't hurt at all. If you get a pen instead of a vial, it's super easy to take with you everywhere too. The needle is microscopic and, if you change it regularly, you won't feel it at all.
    I'm putting a pic of my insulin pen and the needle in spoiler. Dime is there for size reference.

  • Sorry it’s gonna be huge I am on my phone. This is the needle for the Kwikpen. As you can see, it’s really small:

  • Thank you for the reassurance ladies! I call in on Monday with my numbers. I guess they will tell me what they want me to do next when they get these numbers. All my other readings have pretty much been fine, but I pretty don't eat any carbs that don't come in the form of fruit.  No bread, potatoes (regular or sweet), rice (white or brown), cereal at all.
  • If I may, I would suggest eating some carbs other than in fruits, because of the fibers. The trick is to eat smaller portions, and go with cereals with high fiber content like quinoa or barley. Fibers help process carbs, make you feel fuller after a meal, and help when you go to the bathroom. So my dietetist advised me to still eat some.

  • @EvilRaccoon so did mine but any time I do eat anything like that it spikes my blood sugar, not like a few points but like going from 115 (average after meal reading) to 150.
  • @bfpafter4years: I see. I saw my dietetist this morning and I've asked on your behalf if this was normal. She said it could happens, and gave me a few tips that might helps:
    • Some cereals and grains, for some reason, works better than other. For me, quinoa and barley, as well as oatmeal, are nearly magical;
    • Added fibers also helps a lot, but that you already know!
    • Always pair them with proteins and veggies to help your body process the carbs;
    • Respect the prescribed quantities (if you don't have them let me know, I'll copy them for you from my guide tonight), and progressively augment them if it works;
    • Let rice and potatoes rest one night in the fridge, some people process them better after that, because the  food's structure change overnight....it's a chemical thing!
    Good luck!

  • @bfpafter4years - I hope the phone call with your Dr goes good today! I am on insulin every night and i have the vial. I didn't even know they had pens for insulin but it makes sense that they would. I rotate where I inject every night and that keeps it from hurting. I inject into my stomach and the tops of my thighs. If I inject too close to the same spot then I find it hurts a little which is why I rotate. Sometimes when I inject into my thighs I get bruised but it's not bad, just gotta get used to it. Hopefully they won't put you on insulin though and you can avoid it all together.

  • I posted in the MMB thread, but I failed the one hour glucose test, and after an extreme reaction to the three hour test with my first pregnancy, my OB is letting me just proceed like I have GD for the time being, following a GD diet (which isn’t much different from how I normally eat), and tracking blood sugar levels. I think the biggest change for me is the amount of fruit I eat, especially since that’s my major craving this pregnancy (like... A LOT of fruit, in large quantities, haha). I’m not sure if she’ll readdress based on my numbers at my next follow up, or if we are just going with it going forward - the nurse I spoke with yesterday had no idea, but that the GD diagnosis was in my chart now.

  • I'm afraid I'm going to head to GD city. I had it for like a week last time which was just a big hassle. I've been feeling funny, so I've taken my blood sugar and things are so out of whack. My "fasting" readings are high, and I've had some post meal readings that are really, really low. So frustrating.

  • So, my phone call went okay. They are very happy with my daytime numbers but my fasting are still way too high. She was willing to up my dosage one more time and it has brought it down a little but not enough. I am calling again on Monday and we will decide if it is time for insulin. I have a feeling it will be going that way, but I have also been getting terrible nights sleep lately. I am up and down all night and today I had the worst leg cramps in both legs (basically a never ending Charlie horse). I know not sleeping effects your numbers so I am hoping I will sleep better soon and get my numbers down.

    On a side note, this week is our state fair. I love going and sampling all the stuff I don't normally eat. It sucks we are going to have to miss it this year! No funnel cake, fried green tomatoes, fried tacos, or other delights for me :(
  • @bfpafter4years : Sleep can affect your numbers, and so does the heat, sadly. Stress can be a factor, too. Truely, needing insulin is harder on your emotions than your body: it's a barrier to cross, and I had a hard time accepting it was through no fault of mine I had to go there.

    I feel you for the state fair! Me it's a anime convention in two weeks, next to ChinaTown, where I usually gorge on bubble tea, pastries and all the noodles/dumplings I can find. The things we do for our LO!

  • I completely agree! Insulin hurts way more emotionally. And giving up foods is the hardest thing! I guess I'm getting one good thing out of it though...
    Everyone keeps telling me my face keeps getting thinner. The midwife told me yesterday that if I keep up these new eating habits, I may end this pregnancy with an overall weight loss. She said it's rare but since I was overweight before it's possible to lose weight while having a healthy pregnancy. I guess we will just have to wait and see.

  • Oh, and the state Fair and anime convention both sound like so much fun! Our 50th State fair was last month but we didn't have any time to go. I hope you can go and have fun even though you can't eat as much as you normally do.

  • @kamahina9 last time I was at the doctor (after starting this diet) I was down in weight! I know it depends on what you wear and what time you are there, but I was at 203 the time before and I was at 195 last time.
  • We are going to try to go to the fair today and I will resist! Haha!
  • @bfpafter4years - have fun today! Yeah, weight is a tricky thing but since they make a big deal about it while we're pregnant, I do like when they say my weight looks good.

  • @bfpafter4years hope you had a great time!

     I was holding steady for about a month on weight gain, but then I went on vacation! Gained 3 lbs while away :(

  • Ladies, I am having the most stressful day today and all I want is to binge on something sweet. I have already tried PB and yogurt. They aren't cutting it. Is there something else you can think of?

    I just want this home buying experience to be over!
  • @bfpafter4years - I'm sorry you're stressing. When are you set to close on your house? I totally get the stress. We're hoping everything goes well so we'll be good to close in 2 weeks. I don't know how many servings of carbs you are set to have a day, but could you try some fruit to curb your sweet craving? With DS I was allowed to have I think 11 servings of carbs a day (which was actually sometimes hard to fit in).

  • @mockingjay1 We close on Tuesday now. We were suppose to close on Monday but they sent us all this last minute paperwork to complete today and they didn't get some stuff done in time for Monday.
