High Risk Check-in w/o 7/25

Hey, y'all! This is a check-in for those of us that are high risk. Whether you've known from the beginning or were just told, this a place to get some extra support. High Risk pregnancies bring an added level of stress and fear to an already stressful time, so use this as your safe space. It should go without saying, but I will, a lot of this thread thread will be TW, so there is no need to use them. We've either all been through this or are navigating together. So let's support each other as we navigate the craziness of a high risk pregnancy.

1. How far along are you? EDD?

2. Why are you high risk? How many weeks were you when you found out?

3. What is your protocol? I.E. extra monitoring, early delivery, etc.

4. How are you? Use this as your rant/rave/screw this whole situation post.

GTKY: Are you having a baby shower or sprinkle? Will you do it "earlier" than normal?

    1. How far along are you? EDD? 22w, EDD 11/28 with delivery no later than 11/14ish

    2. Why are you high risk? How many weeks were you when you found out? Always knew - twin pregnancy, previous preterm birth, misshapen uterus, advanced maternal age

    3. What is your protocol? I.E. extra monitoring, early delivery, etc. Tons of extra ultrasounds. I'll deliver at least 2 weeks early (but probably sooner). Met with MFM last week for the first time and go back in August. I'll have to deliver in the OR. I'm a candidate for repeat VBAC, so hopefully that works out!

    4. How are you? Use this as your rant/rave/screw this whole situation post. I'm pretty sure I'm headed for a GD diagnoses which sucks. My blood sugar levels are all over the place.

GTKY: Are you having a baby shower or sprinkle? Will you do it "earlier" than normal?
Nope, not having one. These are my third and fourth kids. I've actually never had a shower.

    1. How far along are you? EDD?
I'm 22w 5d, EDD of 11/23, but my doc won't let me go past 11/2

    2. Why are you high risk? How many weeks were you when you found out?
Mo/Di twins. I'm also advanced maternal age, but probably wouldn't really be high risk without the twin discovery. We found out we were having twins at 6w 3d. Also found out 2 weeks ago that one baby has a Pulmonary Stenosis in his/her heart.

    3. What is your protocol? I.E. extra monitoring, early delivery, etc.
I see MFM every other week and will now also see Peds Cardiology monthly. I will be giving birth in an OR (although the MFM doc is confident we could do a vaginal delivery if the babies cooperate) and it will be no later than 37w (11/2).

    4. How are you? Use this as your rant/rave/screw this whole situation post.
I'm actually really good with it all. The Pulmonary Stenosis diagnosis threw me for a bit of a loop, but we have excellent Cardiologists here that will be monitoring it and it's not super-severe.

We also have an excellent NICU here, although, my husband played in a golf outing this past week where there were also some NICU nurses playing. I told him we need to make a good impression (jokingly...they're amazing people and will give our babies great care if needed) and what did he do? He hit them (well, their golf cart) with one of his drives. lol

GTKY: Are you having a baby shower or sprinkle? Will you do it "earlier" than normal?
Yes, we are. We're first time parents and my best friends are planning our shower for 9/8. I think we're doing the typical shower for the gals inside and having a diaper type party for the guys on the patio or in the garage - aka - we provide the food/booze, you bring the diapers. I don't know that it's really all that much earlier, but I definitely didn't want to do it much later.

    1. How far along are you? EDD?  23+1, EDD 21 November.

    2. Why are you high risk? How many weeks were you when you found out?  I have a mechanical mitral valve and have known from the start that I would be high risk. In the last few weeks I found that I have a large subchorionic hematoma sitting over my cervix and that the amnion and chorion (the two membranes that make up the amniotic sac) have separated. I also have a single umbilical artery and marginal cord insertion.

    3. What is your protocol? I.E. extra monitoring, early delivery, etc.  I have been on extra monitoring from the start, but it has really ramped up now with the additional complications. I’m having weekly ultrasounds and visits with my OB. Also seeing my cardiologist at least every 4 weeks for monitoring.

I have been on bed rest at home for the last 5 weeks plus. In that time I’ve had a few episodes of bleeding, and a couple of hospital admissions. I was scheduled to come into hospital on Wednesday this week to meet with specialists and do a tour of the NICU, but I woke up around 2am on Tuesday morning with very heavy bleeding. It was enough that I got MH to call an ambulance even though we live about 5 minutes drive from the hospital. Went straight into delivery suite and have been there since - it’s now early Thursday morning for me. Had a full ultrasound on Tuesday morning and baby still looks great in all respects. She was given an estimated weight of 650g (around 1lb7oz) which is bigger than expected and excellent if she’s going to show up early. They could still see a large hematoma on the scan though, which remains a concern. I was given steroids to help baby’s lungs develop on Wednesday (the day I hit 23w).

    4. How are you? Use this as your rant/rave/screw this whole situation post.  I’m feeling quite up and down. On one hand baby’s growth and weight are going really well and coupled with the fact that she’s a girl give her just about the best chances if she comes early. On the other hand 23w is right on the edge of viability. My hospital has a great NICU but the doctors have been honest about the limitations at this stage. MH and my family have been very supportive and I feel like I’m getting the best possible care in hospital but it’s still a super scary situation. I don’t really want to stay in hospital long term but I’m also fearful about having another big bleed at home. Trying to take things one day at a time but my ability to do so varies a bit.

GTKY: Are you having a baby shower or sprinkle? Will you do it "earlier" than normal?
My Mum offered to host a baby shower for me, and this is my first baby, so I would like to have one. Things feel too uncertain at the moment though, so I’m going to wait a while before getting too much into the planning. We don’t have such a big culture of baby showers here in New Zealand compared to the US (although they’ve become more popular over the last decade or so), so it wouldn’t be unusual for me not to have a baby shower. I’m thinking maybe a celebration after baby is born - something like a secular alternative to a baptism or christening (MH and I are not religious), if things all work out, and especially if I don’t have a baby shower.

@smulrich16 glad to hear you are feeling pretty good despite the pulmonary stenosis diagnosis. I was diagnosed with a couple of cardiac issues in my first months of life (not pulmonary stenosis), and had a first heart surgery at about 18 months, with two open heart surgeries at 3years and 19 years. I can appreciate now how terrifying that all must have been for my parents, but for the most part I would say I have never felt badly affected by it. As an adult, most people would never know I have a heart condition, and I’ve been able to do pretty much everything I want to in life. Chances are your baby will have a similar experience (and will get all the benefits if 30+ years of technological and medical advances).

    1. How far along are you? EDD?
23+3,11/18 but I'll be induced if I make 38 weeks.
    2. Why are you high risk? How many weeks were you when you found out?
Pre pregnancy diabetes, ds was preemie (29 weeks)
    3. What is your protocol? I.E. extra monitoring, early delivery, etc.
Progesterone shots, cervical measurements, extra appointments, early induction
    4. How are you? Use this as your rant/rave/screw this whole situation post.
The closer I get to viability, the better I feel. I imagine the anxiety might kick up a notch around the time I delivered DS.
GTKY: Are you having a baby shower or sprinkle? Will you do it "earlier" than normal?
My sister and stepmom are throwing a sprinkle/diaper raffle. It's actually tentatively scheduled for when I'll be 32 weeks, which is after the point I had DS. Idk why but I insisted we have it later on this time (shower for DS was at 28 weeks due to living out of town at the time). Maybe I didn't want to jinx things?

    @middleschoolmommy thank you!

Not much longer for you to go until you reach viability, which is awesome. I feel like I understand the emotional logic of wanting to wait until later to have your sprinkle, and the likelihood that you’ll breathe a sigh of relief once you get past 29 weeks. This high risk pregnancy thing is a rollercoaster huh?

    1. How far along are you? EDD?
    24+4/ Nov 11, but I wont go past 37 weeks so, 10/22

    2. Why are you high risk? How many weeks were you when you found out?
Preterm delivery and labor, cholestasis and pre-E

    3. What is your protocol? I.E. extra monitoring, early delivery, etc.
I expect to start weekly NSTs in the next 2 week's depending on how my labs come back. Either way, extra monitoring, early delivery, all the fun stuff

I'm ok. Very tired, I can feel my body slowing down like it did last time. I never knew how sick I was until I started feeling better and I can feel my body heading back to that awful place. It kinda scares me because I dunno how I can be a good mom to ds when I get that sick. Right now I'm just trying to enjoy the very limited energy I have now.

GTKY: Are you having a baby shower or sprinkle? Will you do it "earlier" than normal?
I dunno, this is my second. I never had a shower with ds. The ladies at church may throw me a sprinkle, but I'm not going to push it. If they do, I would like it to be sooner than later because I know once I hit 3rd tri, I will be in and out the hospital.

@stitchnz Hoping baby girl gets to bake a little longer. I'm glad you are in high spirits. I know that hospital stays and living week to week is very draining. You are doing amazing!

@KellyT22 Hopefully you wont get GD, but if you do, I hope it's easily manageable.

@smulrich16 I'm glad you are feeling better about the pulmonary stenosis.

@middleschoolmommy I can get why you would want to wait for a shower/sprinkle. I can imagine how stressful 28/29 weeks will be for you. Hitting viability is my favorite time of pregnancy, I always sigh with relief.

@wildrainbow hopefully you might not get as bad as last time. I also fear how the later parts of pregnancy will affect my time with DS.
I start back to work on the 6th and students start on the 20th. I'm really hoping to minimize the begin of school year stress. I already have a feeling that I'll be useless and swollen at the end of the work day.
