1st Trimester

freaking out!! Hugs please!

my husband and i bought new chairs for our living room, and i (without thinking) carried them in from our deck. Ive always been strong and fit, and it wasnt difficult, but when i told my husband that i had arranged them downstairs he said “hun you shouldntve done that!” and i just cant believe i did it. I KNOW im not supposed to lift heavy things. I am freaking out- this is our fourth pregnancy and weve had two losses previously. The last one was really bad- i was diagnosed with ppd and i just havent been the same since, despite therapy and meds. I realize that i am probably being irrational but i need some virtual hugs right now :(

  • Try not to worry.  Easier said than done, right?  Since you are strong and fit everything is most likely fine.  When I was pregnant w/ my 3rd, I was considering applying for an EMT job (lots of heavy lifting) and my instructor said she was just fine when she worked during her pregnancy.  The key is that you didn’t do something that you’ve never ever done before.

  • Lifting things shouldn't be that huge of an issue unless told otherwise by your doctor.  I was a waitress at a banquet facility through my pregnancy and moved chairs 8ft round tables on my own, and heavy trays of food through my 8th month of pregnancy.  My doctor then finally told me I had to stop.  You should be fine, baby should be fine.  Nurses lift during pregnancy multiple times through the day. You say you are fit, you really should be fine, please dont guilt yourself.
    Sorry about your losses.
  • This early on, it's not a huge issue! With my first I was seeing a personal trainer and was lifting weights. Eventually we scaled back, but even at 5 months pregnant I squatted 100# for the first time ever. If you're already fit and strong, then lifting a chair isn't bad! ESPECIALLY with how early it still is for you (assuming you're less than 13 weeks being this is the 1st tri board). I honestly wouldn't worry until you get closer to halfway thru unless your doctor says otherwise. Take a deep breath and try to relax! I know that's easier said than done.

  • This early on, lifting shouldn’t create any major problems. There have already been numerous times I’ve had to carry my almost 40 lb, 4 year old. It’s not like it can be avoided.

Unless your Doctor has previously advised you not to do any lifting, I’m sure things are fine.

I’m 35 weeks pregnant and have been carrying my 30+ lb toddler throughout my pregnancy. He also sometimes likes to be rambunctious and jump on my belly! Since you’re fit and strong anyway and you don’t appear to have strained yourself I truly wouldn’t worry. If you want more peace of mind you could always call your OB but I’m willing to bet you’re perfectly fine!!
