New to Dallas, looking for advice

Good morning!  My family is seriously considering moving to the Dallas area next spring.  I am looking for advice on good areas to live and great schools for my boys.  My 8 year old son is in the gifted program here in Florida, so we need to find a program that will accomodate his needs in Dallas.  We have been looking at houses in the Cedar Hill, Lancaster, DeSoto, and Heartland areas, but the schools there (according to greatschools.org) are severely lacking -- several of them scoring only 3/10.  We will be looking to buy a house in the price range of $250,000ish.  We'd need at least 3 bedrooms, and would love it if it has some land (i.e., an acre or two), but that isn't absolutely necessary. We're hoping for no more than a 30-minute commute from the area near the Dallas Zoo.  Can you recommend some good, safe areas to look?  What are some good schools for us to look at for a gifted program?  We'd prefer public or charter school to private, just for the sake of cost, and would be willing to drive a bit to get him there. Also, can you tell me about preschools in the area?  I have an almost-2 year old as well.  In Florida, he must be 4 by September 1st in order to enroll for the state's free preschool program.  Is there anything like that in Texas?  What are the requirements?

Thanks for your help.  I'm feeling pretty overwhelmed at the prospect of moving to a state that I've never even visited!!

  • I’m moving to Dallas area next month. I’m moving to Frisco but Plano, Mckinney, Allen and Carrollton are other areas that I know are good. Honestly any area is great for schools. I’m about 99% sure the cut off is Sept 1 like it is for you in FL.

  • Also for preschool, at least in DISD, pre-k is tuition-based (but really cheap!) but families who do not meet certain requirements (low-income, language other than English in the home, military).
