Air Travel During First Trimester?

Hey ladies! I know air travel IS considered "safe" until much later in pregnancy, but I wanted to get a few opinions. DH has a business trip on Monday and I was thinking of tagging along for the weekend. Short domestic flight, approx. 2 hours... I'm 6.5 weeks along. Thoughts on whether or not it's (truly) safe for me to go? Or better to be safe than sorry and lay low until I hit the 12 week mark?

Re: Air Travel During First Trimester?

  • Go for it! If it makes you feel better, call your doctor. I traveled cross country in the first tri with my first and did a 3 hr flight early in my third tri. Just be prepared with some stuff in case nausea hits. Being in a hot, cramped space always makes any motion sickness worse.

  • I’m flying on Monday as well! I’m just nervous about the nausea and the fact we will have DS as a lap rider with us.

Why do you think it's unsafe?
  • It depends how long the flight is according to the book Expecting Better by Emily Oster. Too long can increase radiation exposure (being in a plane with less ozone protection) which might lead to increased risk of childhood cancer. She mentions too long as being more than 4 international flights (I think - - can't remember exactly right now). She gives the details with percentages that are safe compared to flight times so that each person can judge for themselves  I highly recommend this book - my nurse friend first suggested it to me. My DH has to go to Wales this month and I was planning to tag along but decided it's not worth the risk (still disappointed about it, though!)
  • I've always traveled throughout my pregnancies. I've traveled as far as Australia and New Zealand (when I was pregnant with DD1) and my OB expressed no concerns about the travel. The H and I are going overseas in a couple of weeks - I'm excited!

But, as others have said, always best to ask your doc! They can set your mind at ease.
  • My mom traveled internationally when she was pregnant with my sister (who turned out great!!) and I have seen lots of pretty international babymoon pictures on instagram so it really is up to the individual! My DH tends towards anxiety, even before there was a baby involved so we tend to err on the side of caution for him.
  • I am taking a few flights during first tri and have no safety concerns for it whatsoever. Only concern for me is that I tend to get really bad all day sickness, especially durjng first tri,  and that would suck on a plane.

  • It’s completely safe. I traveled by plane every 3 weeks until I was 32 weeks with DD. My doctor had no concerns and even at 32 weeks her only concern was me being far from home when going into labor because I had some unique circumstances. Usually it’s okay to fly up until 36 or 37 weeks with no concerns.
  • @meggyme Completely agree! We used to travel so much before our DS and I always promised myself that we would continue to. Granted, he's only 14 months but we've only taken him on a plane once and on a few car trips. Unfortunately, he gets motion sickness. That and all the stuff you have to bring just makes it absolutely exhausting.
  • @meggyme I agree also. We used to travel and vacation frequently prior to having DD. We are just now getting back into taking weekend vacations and she is 4. She’s not been on a plane yet either.

I’m flying to Orlando the first week of October with DH and I’m super excited! It will be our last little break from kids before baby comes. Well I’ll be on vacation and DH will be at a conference all week LoL

  • Thanks for the input, everybody! Super helpful! @lovesclimbing, I don't think it's unsafe I just don't know any better because I've never been pregnant before so I was curious to hear others' opinions. I'm 100% going on a babymoon. I also have a trip to Italy scheduled at the beginning of my second trimester. It's not all travel that I worry about..... it's doing anything in the first 12 weeks that could potentially lead to a miscarriage. 2nd and 3rd trimesters are no-brainer travel options for me, until 36 weeks of course! It's this next few that I've got until I can really feel like my pregnancy is "safe" that I was worried about. But I'm so glad to hear everyone's stories - that solidifies things for me! Thanks again!
