Re: Weekly Questions (w/o 7/8-7/15)

  • So I had a weird test result on my screening for my last pregnancy and ended up doing the maternity 21 test even though insurance didn’t cover it ($500 out of pocket cost to us) so I’m wondering are any other moms out there not doing the initial screening for there other pregnancy’s? It caused a LOT of stress last time and I freaked out for a good six weeks about it.  I’m thinking about not even having the screening done unless something comes back abnormal on the 18 week ultrasound.  Anyone else in the same shoes or whatever?

I’ll at least have the NT scan and blood work or genetic screening if covered. I’m someone who would rather be prepared in the event something is wrong, but could see how others might not want to know

  • Agreed @kayjay44. I will definitely do the NIPT, but I'm over 35 so it's fully covered. I did it last time and it gave me peace of mind. The general genetic screening gave me much higher odds of down syndrome based on my age. It was a huge relief to hear I could disregard those results based on the NIPT.

If you're under 35, this might not be as much of a concern to you though.
  • We do Genetic screening which has to be done between 10 and 12 week due to family history
  • We did genetic testing on me during my first pregnancy (based on my family history) but nothing on baby. This time around we won’t be doing any genetic testing. I have a sibling with a profound developmental disability, and as difficult as it would be we know genetic testing results wouldn’t change anything for us. If it was covered by insurance I’d do it definitely, but we won’t pay out of pocket this time for any extra testing.

DH also has a sibling with a developmental disability and a number of other problems that are potentially genetic, which is why we do the same.

  • Does anyone know the proper way to drink metamucil so it doesnt get all thick and grainy before Im fibished?
  • I do the NIPT even though it isn't covered by our insurance, just for the peace of mind. It wouldn't change how we feel but I like to be prepared. I called the company (my OB does panorama) and they said if the insurance doesn't cover it they give you a 'pay out of pocket' deal, so it will only cost us around $200. So I would definitely recommend calling the company and seeing what options they offer!
  • I’m actually going to the member services after my appt tomorrow to see if NIPT is covered for us. My H is over 40 so that might help. The nurse I spoke to first appt said I’d be surprised how often our insurance covers at least part of it. Worth a shot.
  • This may be a dumb question but does the NIPT automatically tell you gender or do you have to ask for that information too? Last time I didn’t have to but I’m at a different office now and I have heard some places don’t always do it unless requested.
  • @allthingsgo I had the panorama with DS and they asked if I wanted to know the gender or not, I'm assuming they will ask me this time? I think it depends what NIPT test your OB does, I would still ask if you want to find out!
  • @allthingsgo - it’s usually a check box on the consent form.

I used to combine mine w/ OJ & stir with a fork.  And chug it like my college days.

  • Has anyone been given the CPT code for NIPT testing? My Dr uses ClariTest, but I don't think that matters. I forgot to ask for it at my appt today to see if insurance covers it. UGH!
  • I can look in my CPT book in a sec!
  • @Izzfrancisco I want to say 81507.
  • edited July 2018
Okay, upon further research they either use that, 81420 or even 81479. I would just ask your insurance provider for those codes. Further research said 81507 is Harmony specific, so my $ is on 81420

I gave them 81420 and 81422, although I do think it's the first one. They told me $30 copay and the rest is covered, which seems highly suspect to me. But I'm getting it done either way! haha I just hope it really is only $30. They didn't ask for a diagnosis code to support the labs, which is the main reason I'm skeptical. Thank you for the help @madreofdragons

Oh, I just read your first comment, why do you have a CPT book? :)
  • God, I still need to call about NIPT. I hate dealing with insurance companies.

  • @kayjay44 No kidding! I still don't understand why I have to call instead of the office or the lab, when I know they'll be calling, too!
  • I studied coding. And my insurance is saying exactly the same. I have kaiser and provider said a lot more of their plans are covering it now. H is technically advanced paternal age so I might be able to fight it if it backfires on me.

Is APA the same age as AMA? If so, DH will be 35 when this baby comes... would be good ammunition if I need it ;)

  • I called my insurance today re: NIPT. I didn’t have a code but the customer service rep found it for me and worked it out.

  • APA is 40 from what little bit I read. @Izzfrancisco I should be but I can’t afford the cert I want at the moment. Coding came really easy for me. Throw on some headphones and get going. Lol.
  • I'm cpc and crc. Trying to convince our vp to let us work remote is my main goal now!
  • ICD-10 is fun.
