What are y’all planning to do for the 4th? Anyone doing anything fun?

Those not in the US, any fun summer plans coming up?

Re: 4th of July plans?

  • The highlight of my fourth is that I can take all the naps I want midweek, instead of having to wait until the weekend! Lol, score!

In all reality, will probably cook enough to feed a small army - for just SO and me - and hang around the house to keep the animals feeling safe. Hope everyone has more exciting plans than I do. <3

  • DH had to travel for business this week, but gets the day off for the 4th, so we tagged along on the trip. The four of us are in Florida and it looks like the weather is going to (finally) cooperate and give us some beach time! In the evening we are going to catch some beachside fireworks.

  • I'm going to my sister's house for a little swimming action and some lunch. We usually head up to my grandpa's house to watch the fireworks, he's got an awesome view of the beach and we can usually see two towns worth of fireworks. But it's an hour and a half from home and I just don't feel like making the drive and getting home so late. My sister's is an hour away and we'll have a blast then be home in bed at our normal time. Perfect for this pregnant momma.
  • We were going to attend a big family party at my uncle’s, it’s an annual thing with fireworks, food and all that,..but there has been bad flash flooding where he lives so don’t think we are going to make it, so bummed!
  • We have an early morning play date, probably do some cleaning/packing/napping and then grilling out with some friends in the evening.

  • @mrsmang Watching the fireworks from someone’s balcony sounds AMAZING. DH and I were in DC for the 4th a couple of years ago and watched them and it was amazing but also a pain to have to wait around and then to get out of DC and back to our hotel.

We recently moved to a new town where everything is walking distance. There’s a 4th or July parade tomorrow morning so I’m going to walk DD down in her stroller to watch! When H comes home from work I think we’re going to BBQ and relax. We’ve been busy running around for the last week so we’re both ready for a nice day at home.

I really want to see fireworks but DD goes to bed at 7:30 so I don’t think that will happen. But I’m hoping we can see them from our house since the lake they shoot them over is really close.

  • @BitterBetty12 Yeah, once in college, one of my first summers in DC, I did the whole go down to the mall thing and it was awful. We had to sit out there all day in the heat to hold and spot then it turned out we were too close behind some tiny tree and it ruined the view. Then metro was packed to get home too. I didn’t go again after that. I’m excited to see them again from somewhere way more comfortable!

Lol! Me too. Once was enough. DH & I were also young and naive HA! I told him we’re watching on TV and that’s the best view w AC full blast.
  • My BFF, her husband, and their two kids are coming up to our camp for a cookout. I bought steaks and corn on the cob. I've never bought steaks before, and I feel like I should have had a chaperone. I spent $50 just on meat for 4 people & 3 toddlers :open_mouth: They look really delicious, at least.

  • @mrsmang I went to the mall to see fireworks once, then never again. It was way too much of a zoo.  I was able to find other cool spots to see the show, though. The best by far was the lawn in front of the Pentagon. A friend's SO worked there at the time, and was able to bring guests. That was so cool. They shoot the fireworks off from barges in the river, so I think we had a better view than the people on the mall.

  • @AshVA that sounds awesome!  My office is around 15th and L and they had a lottery to watch from the rooftop but I didn’t enter that since we had this other option. We’ll see how good the view really is or if our friend is just hyping it up to get people to come hang out haha. I’m sure it was way better than the mall just by virtue of no crowds. That’s my least favorite thing ever. I just really dislike people.

@mrsmang I had an internship about 4-5 blocks from your office when I was in law school! Do you know if there's still a really good hole in the wall Indian restaurant on K between 10th and 11th? I can't remember its name, but it had an awesome all you can eat lunch buffet for like $9-10, which I definitely appreciated as a broke student lol

    Edit: spelling

  • @AshVA we just moved to that location last week, so I’m not sure but now I’m going to try to hunt it down!!
  • @kns1988 I still get intimidated buying steaks! I usually ask my dad to get them and I pay him back lol. He’s on a first name basis with his butcher and I really think his greatest thrill in life is choosing and grilling meats. I hope your steaks are as good as they look!

  • A friend is having a small wedding tonight so we are going to that. Its about 40 minutes away and I'm hoping DS takes a late nap so he is not super cranky staying up late

  • I usually go to a BBQ at my aunt's house, but it's about an hour and a half away. I'm not really feeling making that trip on my random 1 day off in the middle of the week so we're just going to stick around town. I think we'll probably grab lunch with some friends and then just hang around in the AC. I used to always go to the Boston fireworks when I was walking distance from the river but I'm definitely not dealing with that now that it would require a T ride home.
  • Took DD (12 months) to the parade in town today. She was mildly entertained. Her favorite part was when she waved to the man standing next to us and he asked her who was on her shirt and she got to show off Minnie Mouse!

  • We’re going to my parents house for a low key bbq.

  • Our city does a lot of activities every year. (Small rant- our property taxes are much higher then the surrounding cities, so even though it’s fun that they have so many fun “free” things, I’d rather have some of my tax money back and be able to spend it on what I want.)

My daughter’s dance team is in the parade, so we’ll be going to that. Her dance team is really fun to watch perform. And our local High School’s marching band is always in the parade. They are really fun to watch, too. Most of the other things in the parade and only *meh*. Like why do I care that someone from a local business is waving and throwing taffy from a barely decorated car? They do end the parade with “water floats” and a fire truck spray in people (with a ten minute break between that and the regular parade so those who don’t want to get wet have time to leave.) That generally turns into a big citywide water fight all up and down Main Street, which is pretty fun.

A little later this this evening they have a festival with “free” (read- “forcibly pre-paid by high taxes,) bounce houses, slides, obstacle courses, face painting, and bunch of other activities. They will also have food truck there, and I love food trucks.

This evening they will put on a big fireworks show to music.

So, my inner-libertarian aside, I think it will be a fun day.
  • We got some donuts, had a play date, cleaned a little, took naps, hit Target and now cooking out with friends. It's raining so I doubt we'll get fireworks. I got a fake cocktail and it's not terrible!
