Advice for First Time Moms (July)

This thread is specifically for advice for First Time Moms (FTMs). Pearls of Wisdom, baby shower tips, nesting stories, what you did or didn’t do that was fantastic that you want to share with other Moms (especially FTMs).

STMs who did a freezer stash of meals, how far ahead did you start to make and freeze stuff?

  • @KFrob I haven't done freezer meals. My coworker did freezer meals before both her kids and started 1 month before their due date.

  • I made 6 huge freezer meals about a month before DS was born, and I’m hoping to do the same again this time, much to the chagrin of DH who hates leftovers, but I don’t see him cooking anytime soon, so he’ll have to live with it, haha.

Thanks everyone!  I'm feeling super motivated to get stuff done but don't want to waste time and money by doing it too far ahead.  DH is going to be out of town the first weekend in August and I'm hoping to get my nesting on.  That would be 2 months before EDD.  I said I was going to do freezer meals when I was pregnant with DD and that never happened.
  • Last time I did like 6 freezer meals the day before DS was born. Yup I’m that kind of procrastinator. We don’t have a lot of space, but they were great to have. I will definitely do more this time because now we have to feed a toddler too.
  • I plan to do some freezer meals (definitely gumbo) but also, making mental notes on which restaurants door dash/grub hub/etc. deliver from... because...I'm only human.  :p
  • +1 for the peri bottle, dermoplast, and colace!
  • Yes for extra mesh panties!!! I did that with both kids and it helped out so much! I only wore them for the first week or so though. After that, overnight pads worked fine for me. Everyone is different though so it doesn’t hurt to be prepared either way!
  • +1 to adult diapers! Also I wore one after my water broke, on the drive to the hospital.

Oh, and don’t be a hero and try to skimp on Colace. Take as much of that shit as you can...
Everything I've read from everyone says the exact same thing...which begs the question....who ISN'T popping stool softeners like candy??? I feel like since everyone mentions it, they must know some crazies out there who aren't, or somehow it's "embarrassing" or something like that?  (I will be taking ALL the colace.)

My little sister had her baby in December and refused to take more than 1 a day, even though her OB told her to take 4 a day. Her reasoning was “I just don’t want to end up having diarrhea.” I was like trust me, you won’t. And when you feel like you’re delivering your almost-10 pound daughter all over again,
you’ll wish you’d listened to your doctor and every other mom that has told you to take as much as you possibly can.

  • Colace hasn’t worked for me. Mirolax upsets my stomach, but it’s kind of worked.
  • How far in advance should one start taking colace? Like before we head to the hospital or wait until directed to take it? Or much earlier?

@chopchop25 have you tried milk of magnesia?

  • @tlmill not yet! I gather I should?
  • Milk of magnesia worked for me too, @chopchop25 - however, my doctor didn't sound completely thrilled that I had taken it without consulting her first. Then again, she didn't tell me not to.
  • I'm so used to diarrhea from metformin. Id much rather have that then painful poops and constipation.

@chopchop25 I prefer it to Miralax. It doesn’t give you stomach cramps or pains, which is really nice.

  • Thanks @tlmill, I will pick some up this weekend! I'm actually surprised it's back...I'd been doing so well the last few weeks. Seriously, frosted mini wheats were magic for staying regular for awhile.
  • I wouldn't take colace until after giving birth... unless youre constipated lol.

  • miralax never worked for me...it wasn't strong enough. Milk of Magnesia is awesome, and my OB has given me the OK to take it. Basically, take it, and stop once you have a BM.
  • OMG. Yall. I've been taking Magnesium for migraines (doc said it would help tremendously)! But they failed to tell me magnesium was a stool softener so I've still been taking colace!!!!!!!! I finally stopped- but no wonder I got diarrhea!!!

and I agree with the extra mesh panties, the dermoplast, and I asked to take home some tucks (thanks to pushing for 2 1/2 hours I ended up with some bad hemorrhoids the first go round- they gave me a HUGE container of them). and all the colace. I take it on and off now when I'm constipated but I started taking it in the hospital after birth.
