Weight gain?

I'm 6wk5d and just weighed myself for the first time since finding out I was pregnant. Since then I have gained 5 pounds! Has anyone else experienced such weight gain so early? I've been wanting to have a healthy pregnancy so I've been working out more (cardio and strength) and while I haven't had any morning sickness, I've had strong food aversions, so my diets been pretty much the same, if not less. Clothes fit the same, except for bloating in lower stomach.

My husband (bless him) has attributed it to muscle and water retention. I'm panicking that I'm on a path for severe weight gain during this pregnancy. Anyone who can relate?

Re: Weight gain?

  • Weight will very throughout the day depending on what you’ve eaten, water retention, poop, etc. Try not to stress too much. Your doctor will say something if there is a concern. I think the most important thing is that mom and baby are healthy. With my first i gained almost 50 lbs and doctor never said a thing. This time I’m close to 50 again and dr (a different one) hasn’t said anything either. Me and baby are healthy. It’s just how my body grows babies regardless of what I do.
Also make sure you talk to your doctor about your workouts and diets. There are certain exercises you shouldn’t do and you want to maintain a higher (but healthy) calorie intake during pregnancy and if you plan to breastfeed.

  • Depending on your workouts, I would think it could definitely be muscle gain, at least some of it! As PP said though, weight can vary a few pounds, and every body is different, so I wouldn't be too worried unless your doctor says anything.
