Pregnancy Induced Hypertension and/or Pre-Eclapmsia

Has anyone had PIH or Pre-E (or both?) and treated it or tried to prevent it in subsequent pregnancies?

I had PIH and Pre-E with DS that led to my induction at 38w and extra monitoring after delivery. My OB mentioned studies that show aspirin in second and third tri can reduce the risks. Has anyone done it? What were some other things recommended to you?

Re: Pregnancy Induced Hypertension and/or Pre-Eclapmsia

  • I had high BP with DD and my doctor had me start taking a BP medication to keep it under control.  My BP was stable my entire pregnancy.  I was induced at 37 + 2 when it started creeping up.

This pregnancy I have had BP in my "normal" range so far and she had me start taking a baby aspirin already.  I take that daily with my pre-natal.  We discussed at my last appointment and she said there was nothing I could do last pregnancy to avoid Pre-e.  I was a healthy weight, gained the appropriate weight, ate a balanced diet and exercised.  I am continuing those things this pregnancy and hoping to avoid pre-E!

  • I had PIH with my first and was induced a week early. I never had it with my second and she went a week overdue. I have heard it is more likely with your first. I also have heard positive things about baby aspirin even though I never tried it personally.

  • I haven't had issues previously but I'm currently on baby aspirin for clotting concerns (they suspect that's what happened with my losses last year. The placenta didn't form properly because of mini clots). When I was at my appointment last week he was talking about stopping the progesterone at 12 weeks and I mentioned I heard baby aspirin would be stopped then too and he said he's just going to keep me on it the whole time. So I think he's in the can't hurt tribe. I have totally normal BP so we'll see how it goes.

I had pre-e with ds and delivered him at 34 weeks. I was supposed to wait 18 months between pregnancies but whoops, this baby was conceived after 12 months. I'm going to be taking a baby aspirin every day once I hit 12 weeks. My ob is also going to be doing steroid shots once I hit 30 weeks to make sure babies lungs will be more developed if I have to be induced. I also purchased a blood pressure monitor and I'm required to take it daily and keep a log of my readings.

My bff had pre-e with her daughter and delivered her at 30 weeks. We were pregnant together this last time and she completely changed her diet. She ate high protein, made sure to limit her sodium intake and took a baby aspirin. I'm not sure what it was that helped but she delivered her son full-term.

Also, I think the big thing for me is knowing when I'm having pre-e symptoms. I had terrible headaches in the third trimester and by the time I had blurry vision and swollen everything it was too late.
  • I also had pre-e with my first and delivered at 34 weeks. My dr also suggested daily baby aspirin starting in twelfth week. I got down to a healthy weight before pregnancy which was the only other thing my dr mentioned could be helpful. We have my c-section scheduled for 39 weeks 2 days and it is my goal to make it that far!

  • I had PIH AFTER delivery with DD (they didn’t call it pre-e because I didn’t have any protein in my blood) that maybe started a week or so before hand but didn’t progress until a few days after she was born. My OB told me that she likes anyone who had BP related issues to start baby aspirin right away. Interestingly I was on it last time because I had a superficial thrombophlebitis around 21 weeks, but since I started it later I wonder if I just didn’t have the full effects. Though it’s also not a guarantee that it will stop it.

  • My sister had hellp syndrome at 22 weeks with her 3rd, so with her 4th, they put her on baby aspirin from the beginning.  Her MFM said to take it all the way through and not to stop it. Something about the placenta forming and needing the aspirin at that time?  Her MFM told her she still had an 80% chance of developing hellp, and even sooner than before, but she made it to 37 weeks.
  • I just had my nurse intake and she said we'll for sure start aspirin in second trimester and she ordered extra labs to get a baseline for my liver, protein levels, etc. So we can keep a preventative eye out.

  • I was going to post about this tonight!  I had my 1st appointment today, and I’m feeling a little discouraged!  I’m being seen by a mw, as that’s my preference, and would really like to try for a vbac!  When I was going over my history with her, it almost seemed like she was questioning my decision to be seen by a mw rather than an OB!  She said she’ll have to co-manage my care with one of the ob’s in the practice....which is what I had to do last time, so I’m totally fine with that!  But she really made it seem that the likelihood of being able to try for a vbac would be slim to none given my history!  She also made it seem likely that I will develop pre-e again, and even earlier than with my 1st!  I was diagnosed at 28 weeks with my 1st, and delivered at 34+6.  Idk....I obviously want her to be real with me, I just feel a little blindsided!  I expected to be monitored closely, but I’m 10 weeks and there’s already talk of me coming in every 2 weeks rather than the normal every 4.  I guess I’m just a little shocked by everything she threw at me!  Anyway...she told me to stop on my way home and get aspirin and start taking it now!
