Moms of Multiples chat w/o 6.12.18

Let's get this week's Moms of Multiples chat going

Have you gone to the Maternal Fetal specialist yet?

If so, what was your experience?

If not, when do you expect to go?

Obviously, we can chat about anything, but I thought I'd throw out a little discussion teaser.

i’ve had two apppointments at mfm so far. the first was the nt scan, the second was the start of my eow monitoring for ttts. the first one was so long! the tech was training a new hire and was explaining everything and answering lots of questions. it felt extra long because i had a full bladder. the second was also kinda long, but the tech was friendly and we had nice conversation. i’m lukewarm towards the mfm doctor i saw at the end for both. she doesn’t strike me as very genial or sympathetic. i’m not crazy about how long i have to lay on my back.

@highsteaks I had the same US tech experience in my first appointment! It took them 2 HOURS to complete the scans because one of the girls was new to MFM and the trainer had her redo a few scans and then had to go back and check her work. They were both super nice, though.

I love my MFM doc. He was really great in explaining the risks, without making it sound scary or daunting. You also have to love when the doctor hands you his card and tells you "if you feel anything that seems odd - call me. We'll probably have you come in, just to be safe." He also told me that labor for twins is completely different than labor for singletons, so if I feel something that I don't think is normal and my friends who had singleton pregnancies say, "Oh yeah, I had that too...it's nothing to worry about." It probably IS something to worry about and come in and be seen, just to be safe.

@smulrich16 oh man, at least the trainer was doing my scan, so i didn’t have to wait for re-dos. that must have been brutal!

yea, all my mfm doc did was explain what mo/di twins were in a dumbed down way, then told me that i had to come in for extra appointments to watch for signs of ttts. didn’t even explain what that was. then told me how important it was to take my supplements and aspirin, and follow the minimum dietary guidelines. at the second appointment she told me everything looked fine and asked if i had concerns, and that was that. your doc sounds awesome!

I have not seen the MFM specialist yet. I'm not actually sure if I'll ever meet with her because my OB works closely with her. I know my OB has contacted her to find out if I should be on progesterone shots, but since they never called me about them, I'm assuming I don't need them.

@highsteaks I wish everyone could go to my doc. He was so great. He first asked me what I knew about mo/di twins and when I started using words like mono-chorionic and di-amniotic and explained what all that meant, he was like, "Are you in the medical profession, or have you just really done your homework." I said, kinda both (since I have worked in healthcare IT for over a decade - you catch on to the medical stuff). But he explained what TTTS is and that there are grades and that if it does happen (which it only really happens in about 10-15% of twin pregnancies where they share the placenta) they will just watch it in Grade 1 & 2, but if it progresses to grade 3, they will refer me to another specialist to have a procedure done to fix it.

It makes me sad when people feel like doctors don't really care about their patients like they should. Unfortunately, it tends to be more prevalent in Specialist :disappointed:

@smulrich16 i’m a do your homework type, too. i find that trying to find out everything i possibly can actually helps abate any anxiety.

@highsteaks My doctors keep saying things like "I'm not trying to scare you with all these risks" and I always tell them, "I want all the information I can get." I always look for sources in the articles I read and I LOVE a good statistic. I've always said I'm a hope for the best, but prepare for the worst kind of person. I like to know what I'm up against.

What all my research has shown me is this: Yes, there are more risks for a twin pregnancy and my care team is monitoring for those issues. The odds are, though, that I'll have a healthy pregnancy resulting in 2 healthy babies.

@smulrich16 exactly. still working on reassuring myself about that last sentence though  :)

@highsteaks Oh, I have to reassure myself daily. I'm told that's our new normal, though. You never stop worrying...

RE risks: I am more terrified than normal because I came into this pregnancy has high risk before I even knew it was twins. I have a history of preterm labor (DS1 was born at 35 weeks), advanced maternal age, and the worst piece - a misshapen uterus. All I can hold on to is that DS2 was born at 39 weeks, perfectly healthy. The difference for me is that I had progesterone shots with him and they don't seem to do that with twins. Hoping for the best!

@KellyT22 with your extra risk factors and previous history, it’s understandable that you’re more terrified than normal. does your doc have a plan to help keep the babies in as long as possible?

I was looking at my healthcare patient portal and I noticed that on Wednesday Placenta Previa was added to my list of current medical issues. It wasn't brought up in my consult on Monday, but I assume that is because the provider didn't have time between the scan and the consult to do a detailed review of the scans. I did some reading up on it and it is a little scary. I'm trying to be positive and focus on the fact that there are different levels of Placenta Previa and hope that it's only partial and, hopefully, will resolve itself as the uterus expands. Otherwise, it carries some pretty high risks during delivery :worried:

@smulrich16 Aw I'm sorry...that is worrisome. Maybe they just made a note about it as something to look out for? They definitely should have found a way to discuss that a little bit if they thought there was an issue! If it is, I hope it resolves soon!

I've had one appt with an MFM, not at the hospital I'm hoping to go to, but the one where I will be sent if this pregnancy gets too high-risk. It was overall a good and very informative experience - I actually really liked the doctor and she listened to me and didn't make me feel stupid. Unfortunately she's the only woman on the team of 4 specialists there, so I'm really hoping if I do end up getting sent there that I will be lucky enough to end up with her. I know I'm weird...I'm one of those people that just can't imagine a male doc for this!! They were only able to book a 45 minute ultrasound for me because it was either that or wait until mid July.  Twins were confirmed mono-di, which falls right in the middle of safest and not-so-safe. We didn't find out the genders, but we have a "part 2" ultrasound on June 27th which will be a full 2 hours. Babies were so active, it was hard for the sonographer to get all the right angles! We did get a video and some pics though, so there's something to tide me over until next time.

Were you all told you have to have an ultrasound every 2 weeks, then once a week after 28 weeks, and TWICE a week after 32 weeks?! I only had one ultrasound with my son, so my mind exploded when they told me.

@FreeTheElf yep, going eow now for ultrasounds, eventually 1/w. i’m surprised there’s at least 3 of us participating here with mo/di twins! i’m grateful to have others to talk to.
