Re: Pregnant and Anemic

  • As for me -
I am anemic even when not pregnant. I struggle to control my anemia. I take iron supplements, B12 supplements, try to eat the right foods but still CAN'T EVER seem to get my levels in the healthy range.
I would love to know what brands of iron anyone else is taking and how much a day! All advice welcome. It's been 6 years that I've known about my anemia and never once have I felt like I was in control of it.

My symptoms are constant dizziness, forever out of breath after walking short distances, always tired. UGH

  • I got severely anemic when pregnant with my son, I took Megafood Blood Builder.  It's iron sourced from food and it also had vitamin C to help with absorption as well as B-12 and folate.  I've never gotten constipation or nausea from it (it can even be taken on an empty stomach) and it helped me get my iron levels back up to a safe level pretty quickly.

I don’t think I’m anemic yet, but when I was anemic I was taking Ferro Sequels and they got my iron levels where they needed to be. Eventually I was able to stop taking them. I believe vitamin D supplements helped me too because I was deficient there as well.

  • My OB didn't tell me anything about anemia so I guess I'm clear for now? But historically I'm generally borderline. My last pregnancy I loved taking my daily shot of Floradix liquid iron supplement. I may just get myself another bottle now that I'm thinking about it.

  • @AdorkablePixie I’m sure it’s different! Floradix is food-based and tastes like juice, some say with the aftertaste of a penny but I never noticed that.

  • My blood test results from yesterday showed that I'm still low on blood even after taking a prenatal a day with iron in it, and one extra iron pill a day (2 every other day) plus B12 supplement. She wants me to add in two more iron pills a day. I'm so scared. I hate what it does to my body. I'm going to look into this liquid iron thing! And going to go stock up on stool softeners.

  • Dr just called and said I am barely anemic. He wants me to take Floradix. @PensiveCrayon are they basically all the same? I see there's + vitamins or + herbs. Which one were you taking?
  • @gorgeousariel I’m thinking they’re all pretty much the same, if you’re looking on Amazon or whatever. I’ve had a good experience with the liquid — I’m not sure about the pills.

  • @PensiveCrayon thanks! They specifically said liquid so that's what I'm getting.
  • @asun123 I'm a little late to the party, but when I was on that much iron, a magnesium supplement helped in addition to the stool softeners/extra fiber.

When I was anemic I took Wellesse liquid iron and another brand of liquid iron that came in individual serving packs (eta: it was called Spatone I think).  Those helped get my levels up pretty quickly.  The Welllesse was cheaper and didn't taste as bad.
