Gestational Diabetes

Hello Ladies,

I was just diagnosed with gestational diabetes, I am currently 30 weeks. I had it with my first pregnancy, so I am familiar with it.  Just started testing on Friday and was in a wedding so my numbers were not the greatest ( I had no time to prep some meals for myself before hand)

I just thought maybe there are some other ladies out there with GD and wanted to chat numbers, recipes..ect. ( I tried looking for a board and couldn't find one so if there is another one out there I apologize)

thanks!!

Re: Gestational Diabetes

  • I am 27 weeks just diagonosed w GD yesterday. First child, not sure what to expect from here.
  • It's honestly not the worst. This is my second time having it. Although I feel a lot more tempations this time around. Especially since it's Birthday month in my family and there will be cake everywhere!

But I just always have trouble with recipes. One recipe I really like and contains no carbs is a sausage and veggies.  I cut up broccoli, zuchhni, onion, peppers, carrots put it all in a big bag drizzel a littel olive oil, some seasoning and mix it up. I cook up some turkey sausage and cut it up combin the sausage and veggies on a tray sprinkle a little parmesane cheese on top. cook in the oven at 425 for about 15 minutes.  It's very good! some people put ontop brown rice. I keep it as it.

Let me know if you have questions. Or want to talk. I love knowing there are other women out there going through this same thing!!!

Make sure you are eating carbs. That meal sounds great but you need carbs to keep things regulated. No carbs isn’t actually good.

  • Yup :) Trust me I get my carbs in. haha. I like to do this dinner on days when maybe I've added extra carbs in the morning or for lunch. Like next weekend is my neices 1st birthday, I am craving cake!! so I want a small piece to get something sweet so for dinner I will probably have that so that I don't over do it. I try to find a balance that way.
  • @megpeg yea if you have recipes I would like to hear them!! I get sick of the same old things agian and agian.
  • I just received the phone call Friday afternoon that I failed my three hour, the second time. My doctor and I both thought I would pass it this time.

    Back story:
I passed my 1 hour at 12 weeks, failed my 1 hour at 26 weeks by 1 point, failed my 3 hour on the 22nd but was also diagnosed with a nasty kidney infection that landed me in the hospital for 36 hours to receive IV antibiotics. My doctor thought the infection threw my results off so I retested last Tuesday.

I did did not have gestational diabetes with my son, but was borderline, at the time she decided to keep an eye on his growth before retesting or making me poke myself.  So this is all new to me. I am waiting on my call to schedule to meet with a dietitian and nutritionist and will be meeting with my doctor this Friday. I did start testing yesterday and so far all of my numbers are below what the doctor’s office wants to see them at.  Prior to this my doctor already mentioned inducing me a week early, which we did with my son, so I am not sure if this diagnoses will move that week up or not.
  • @baxter2012 if you were borderline last pregnancy, it's not entirely surprising for you to have GD this time...it's more likely as you get older to begin with and you were already pretty close.  FWIW everyone I know that was induced because of GD was induced at 39 weeks, not before.  So unless you have some other complication pop up, it will probably be the same this time around.
  • @baxter2012 hopefully on Friday your doctor can clarify, but I don't think they would induce super early unless baby gets very big

  • @baxter2012 Yea my doctor was going to induce me at 39 weeks. Baby ended up coming on his own, funny enough actually they day she scheduled it my water broke.

I did have a little episode the other night when I stared to cry because I felt like I could eat anything.

  • I failed my 1 hr last week and now have to do the 3 hour. I'm afaid I'm be sooo sick. I still fell nausea  on a daily basis and have problems keeping food down. So having to fast and drink all that sugar. I'm freaking out. And then if I do have GD.. I'm not firmilar with it at all. What are the problems associated with it.. etc..I had pre-eclampsia with my 1st and ot was awful... but not GD
  • I wouldn't worry too much about failing the one hour, it's more common than you would think.

I know they checked in with me frequently when I was taking the 3 hour to see how I was feeling.  They allowed me to sip water, which helped.

Generally the complications my doctor is watching out for with GD is a big baby (which can cause labor complications), so we have regular growth scans to see how baby is progressing in growth and I work hard to keep blood sugars below a certain level to help make sure baby doesn't get too big.

  • @delujm0 @Stac928 thank you. I hope that she keeps it at 39 weeks. With my son they just kept an eye on his growth and I had weekly non stress tests until they determined he was fine.

@lindsaym2106 I am having those moments too. At this time I am just trying to figure out what I can and cannot eat. Thankfully my husband has been on a low carb diet for the last month so it is making things a bit easier. With my son I went in 3 cm dilated so the induction was not terrible, I am hoping she decides to come on her own because the induction date but if not oh well.

@babbyonboard for my 3hr I was allowed to drink water the whole time. My lab also gives you a bag to keep with you if you feel like you’re going to get sick.

Other than the possibility of a large baby you can be more likely to have pre-e. You also may not be allowed to go over due as long because GD can make the placenta start to break down earlier.
If you do have it you should be going to counseling on how to eat during the rest of your pregnancy. Guidelines can be different with different offices. They will want you to eat a certain amount of carbs at each meal and snack through the day.
I am already gluten free and found that lentil pasta was great because the amount of protein helps with the carbs. Another thing that is great is almond flour. I made pancakes from that and ate them with peanut butter or fruit. Or you could go with a sugar free syrup or sugar free jam.

  • Ok Ladies, I am feeling super guilty!! The past week I have cheated on the diet twice. My aunts brithday party I have a peice of cake...it was very small, but I still felt horrible, and this morning at work I just couldn't wake up so I went to our coffee machine we have in our shop and got a 6oz french vanillia. I know there are women to cheat way more than this but, I feel guilty like I am hurting baby boy. :( anyone else feel this way at all??
  • I was on a mini vacation this past weekend with DH and ate more carbs than I should have.  I managed it with my insulin dose for the most part.  Generally, the concern with GD is a big baby which can lead to other complications.  So I doubt those two instances are enough to raise your blood sugar and magically grow your baby to super size.  But it is something to watch.  Are you testing?  If so, did you notice how your blood sugars were impacted?

  • @stac928 yea, after the small piece of cake my number was 111 (which is under the 120) and i used my last test strip this moring before my coffee (i have to go pick up more this afternoon).  I am always just very nervous I will do something that could potentially hurt baby.  My husband tells me to not be so crazy because my last ultrasound at 32 weeks baby was measuring at 4lbs and the doctor said that is a perfect weight so far.
  • @lindsaym2106 I'd say you're doing just fine so long as your numbers are within target and you're not overdoing it too frequently. You can't be expected to be good every day, and everyone needs an occasional "cheat" just to be normal and enjoy life. As long as the baby is growing well, isn't too big, and your doctor isn't worried, I wouldn't be too concerned by the occasional treat.

As for me, my numbers keep trending higher even with an increased insulin dosage and eating pretty much the same foods I was doing really well on before. I'm thinking the stress of moving, stress of toxic family, and feeling like a cripple with this SPD pain isn't helping things. Plus when you're moving and in limbo between houses, your diet isn't as consistent. I'm often too tired to eat a meal or cook a real meal. Plus it's hotter than Hades outside and I don't want to eat meat or fattening things that help buffer a meal, I want cool and refreshing fruit plates and cold cut sandwiches and I can't. It's all so frustrating especially when I get bored easily of eating the same crap day after day, week after week, month after month...and now I have to be even more strict, and it's still going high. I just want to scream after meals a lot of the time.

I will confess, after my last prenatal visit I went to Cold Stone Creamery for a small treat. I haven't had real ice cream in forever, it was super hot out, and I'd never been there before...plus it's right next to the Motherhood Maternity store. As a self-avowed Sweet Tooth, I need to hand in my Sweet Tooth Card...I couldn't even finish the smallest size they have...I got halfway through and got nauseous from it being too sweet and threw it out.
  • @neeraja_k I know what you mean, a fruit plate or a good turkey sandwich sounds amazing! I actually emailed my Doctor this morning because lately about an hour after eating my arms, hands and sometimes my legs will feel weak almost jello-like. So she is having me test 1 hour after meals today and my lunch number was 125 (after 1 hour) usually after two hours my number is around 95-100 so that seemed pretty good.

I could go for coldstone!! That's my husbands favorite.  It's hard when it get's really hot here I just want some good ice cream or popsical. This weekend it's going to be 95 with heat index of 103. I will be floating my pool!  But I am too so sick of the same foods, day after day. Especially breakfast I can't eat eggs anymore!!

  • Fruit does sound good. And I swear someone needs to bring me Jimmy Johns after this pregnancy. I miss sandwiches!

  • I have GD as well and cheat probably more than I should. My numbers are all pretty within range and the things I expect to spike my numbers don't then the things I expect to be fine are the ones that do spike them. I don't feel guilty when I cheat on it though, it's not enough to make a huge spike and it's not often. We're pregnant women, they seriously cannot expect us to NEVER indulge.

  • @calimom2524 I'm glad to know that I am not the only one who cheats every once in a while.  The 4th is coming up, so I am being very good, mainly because I know I will have a little cheat that day. I find that as long as I need enough protien my numbers are really good. The one thing that I really want and have not given in to is ice cream! this past weekend was very hard, it was 95 with a heat index of 103 so it was a day I really could have gone for a nice bowl of ice cream.

  • Feeling super guilty agian!!!!

Today someone brought in Mexican Bread filled with Vanilla custard. I was starving so I took one. I only had like 5 bits, but it was topped with sugard. AHHHH I feel like everytime I have something like that I am hurting my baby. My husband tells me I put too much pressure on myself, because I follow this diet about 99% of time, but every once in a while I do that. But then I feel guilty.  oK Rant over....

  • @lindsaym2106 You're okay. Life isn't worth living if you have to be good all of the time. :p

I just gorged on a small tub of Siggi's vanilla yogurt and watermelon for breakfast, because I am THAT tired of eating greasy meat and eggs. And it was heavenly...so light, so satisfying.

I seem to be swinging the other way now, the things that did affect my sugar doesn't as much now. Maybe that means I'm on the downhill swing of the whole thing.
  • Hello,
just seeing this thread. Although I dont have GD, my son is Type 1. Although they are different conditions, they are managed similarly. I have been low-ish carb (not no carb) my entire pregnancy as we eat this way as a family for my son’s sake.
I can recommend a few sites that have great recipes:

  • Had my growth ultrasound today (37 weeks and 4 days) to see how baby is growing. Baby boy is measuring at 6lbs 12oz so far. Now I have to wait to hear from my doctor if there is a plan to induce me at 39 weeks.  She was going to with my first, but my LO came before I could be induced. But He looks healthy and that is all I care about!
