Abnormal pap

hi mamas! Went in this week for my NT scan and my doc told me my results from my pap last visit was abnormal. HPV was negative (I’ve always tested negative and never have had HPV) I’m 32 with baby #4 and do not smoke. I’ve had superb vaginal health all my life. If I don’t have HPV than what causes cells to be abnormal on the cervix?

I go in next week for a procedure to look at those cells more closely. Im so nervous something is wrong. Anybody have any insight?

Re: Abnormal pap

  • I’m sorry you have an abnormal pap. But honestly these all sound like questions for your doctor. hopefully it’s nothing.
And I can’t tell since I’m on mobile, but if you haven’t introduced yourself on our introduction thread please do, and jump into our many threads we have going on.

  • I believe there was some talk about this in the weekly appointments thread last week:

But yeah, as @Jens_Hoes said, really, only your doctor can answer questions specific to your situation - can you call his/her office to put your mind at ease/answer some of your questions while you wait to go in? Good luck!

I haven’t had an abnormal pap while pregnant but I have had them in the past. And I’ve gone in to have them looked at more closely (coloscopy-sp?) and been cleared. I’ve done this whole process twice.
I haven’t had HPV but sometimes cells are just abnormal and they will look at them closer to make sure they are not precancerous. The benefit of finding abnormal cells is if it is looking like it could be something they can detect it so early!
easier said then done but try not to worry until the doctor gives you a reason to! Abnormal cells are nothing to worry about until they are. :)

I had an abnormal pap in college and they never found a reason for it even after a colposcopy (spelling...?) I've had normal ones for ten years now.  Sometimes the cells just get weird.  I wouldn't worry at the moment.

  • Thank you ladies for your insight. I plan on asking these questions at my appointment next week. I appreciate you taking the time to tell me about your personal experience.
  • @mothergoose4 I had an abnormal PAP a few years ago and my doctor told me that there are so many cells in our bodies and typically we naturally get rid of them. Oftentimes, we don’t even know about it. Good luck! I hope it turns out to be nothing.
  • I just wanted to add, sometimes you can have an abnormal pap after having sex. I didn't know that and had an abnormal pap or two and realized it was because I was DTD a day or two before  pap. Apparently if you want a normal PAP, don't have sex before. Also, I am pretty sure pregnancy can change things and that would cause it to be abnormal too, but could be wrong. Either way, good luck and I hope it's nothing.

  • I mentioned this same thing in the weekly threads as @maureenmce mentioned. I have recently gotten an abnormal pap result, but my OB said it was a low grade cell change, (or LSIL) and recommended we do a colposcopy after the pregnancy. If it was a higher grade change I would have been doing one while still pregnant as apparently it isn't a dangerous procedure while pregnant. But since it was minor, we're going to wait and see if it resolves on it's own. :) My OB said it's usually caused from HPV but didn't say I tested positive for it. I do, however, have BRCA1 which is a gene mutation which places me at a higher risk for cervical/breast cancers so, it's hard to say. We shall see. She didn't seem concerned, so I'm not worrying either.  Good luck though! Your OB should be able to ease your mind and give you the most accurate info.
