Sleeping positions

I didn't see a thread for this, but if there is one please let me know. I know by 20 weeks you shouldn't be sleeping on your back, but I seem to roll from my side to my back sometimes while I sleep, as I'm naturally a back sleeper. Anyone got any tips for the best ways to keep you on you side while you sleep? I've tried pillows, but I just roll onto them.

Re: Sleeping positions

  • Also a natural back sleeper. Hopefully your pillows are fluffy enough that at least when you roll onto them you aren't entirely flat. If not, get fluffier ones! I'm using the u-shape pillow and that's helping me. I also find that if I do end up on my back, my body wakes me up - my doc told me that this would happen and not to worry if it does.

  • My OB told me to use a wedge pillow behind me so I can sleep on my back. There are a few pregnancy ones you can find on Amazon

To second what @chopchop25 said, I actually have experienced waking up on my back and change positions. I wouldn't worry about it.
  • @kaelynrayne I also sleep on my back naturally a lot. My doctor told me the same thing as these ladies have heard. My body will wake me up if it becomes a problem and to not worry about it. If you are worried- I hear the wedge pillows really help. They'll also help with congestion and heartburn if you're dealing with any of that!

My doc said not to worry about that. Not sure, I am a natural side sleeper and have been sleeping better on my back. I do have a pillow on  my side and am slightly elevated also.

I’m sleeping on my side, but often wake up on my back or my stomach. I’ve been looking at some of the pregnancy pillows but I’m not sure which one to try. While we’re on this topic, anyone care to share a link of pillows they are using and would recommend?

I am using a pregnancy pillow and I still end up on my back and since I bedshare with a toddler I am not sure I want to try a wedge yet. It’s driving me crazy! I figure I will wake up if it’s messing with anything but I still worry so if anyone has any tips besides a pillow let me know haha.
  • I haven’t had issues sleeping yet but would LOVE to get the Bb hug me pillow from Norway. One of my friends recommended it and it sounds amazing. Unfortunately it’s expensive and would be a logistics nightmare to get to Canada so I’m making due without.

Instead, I’m using a king size latex pillow from Costco behind me when I sleep on my side. I’m also a natural back sleeper but the latex is super bouncy so it holds its shape if I roll onto it while still staying very comfortable. We have a king size bed and my husband still complains about my pillow fortress so I can’t imagine having a full size pregnancy pillow in there.
  • I have a u-shaped pillow and I really like it. I find myself sleeping on my back a lot, but on a slight angle because of my pillow.

Possibly already discussed, but where did you guys get your pregnancy pillows?  Target doesn't have any and BRU was cleaned out of anything useful.

  • Amazon, @lest12, like virtually all of my other things.

  • @lest12 - I didn’t like the pregnancy pillow that I bought, so I switched to a regular body pillow (It is a down pillow, which is fabulous!).  I also use two standard size pillows to make a nest.

Mine came from The Company Store; they don’t carry that particular style anymore, but they still have down filled body pillows.

I have two body pillows and my regular pillow, DH doesn't get much room in our tiny bed, but when he gets home from work I usually ditch one body pillows and lay on him lol
  • My sisters bought me a snoogle for my birthday and I LOVE IT!!! It’s super comfy and I can use it in so many different positions. I’m not typically a back sleeper, so not using it to avoid that, but in general I am so so glad I have it! It’s also the only pillow I need anymore bc it’s so long I can use it for between my knees and to rest my head on. It looks huge in the pictures but since I’m either holding onto it or have it pressed right up against my back for support, it still fits just fine with me and DH in our queen bed.

  • Even my doggy loves it!  ;)

I agree about the Snoogle pillow! It has really helped with the hip pain. @mamat2be my dogs also love it, I’m have to fight them for the nook  :)
  • I love my snoogle it was definitely worth the money.  DH in a snuggler and sleeps really close to me so I hug the pillow on my side and use him as a prop when I end up sort of on my back.
  • +1 for the Snoogle! The only thing I'm sad about is it limits cuddling due to size sometimes. I think I just need to accept that the bigger I get the less spooning there will be due to all the pillows I'm gonna need to get comfortable. I'm also a back sleeper so have been struggling. I flip sides SO many times during the night.
  • I would love a snoogle! I doubt that there would be room for DS (2.5) and DH in bed after that.  :D I just use a body pillow.
  • That's what we call it too, @tinattt23! I can't imagine not having a u-shaped pillow either.
  • team u-shaped pillow! I toss and turn all night long.
  • I love my u-shaped. It's my nest. DH hates it. I borrowed it from a friend and it's gotten some use between her, a friend of hers and the person she bought it used from.

I got a u-shaped pillow yesterday - holy comfortable.  That was the best night's sleep I've had in weeks.

  • I have a snoogle which I love, but I've been having some pain when sleeping on my side, even with that, so i've added another pillow under my head so i can sleep on my back and i'm sitting up more. The snoogle is great to put between your legs or to put your feet up on the bottom part. I would suggest you get one with a zipper though. I got the removable case one and it was like trying to wrestle a python to get that pillow case back on it after I washed it!

Also wanted to add: I use a pillow on top of my u pillow because I don't think it's enough neck support. Plus, the reviews don't lie. It's super awkward uncomfortable on your neck if you don't. I think it rubs in a weird place. But just pop another pillow on top and it's perfect. So don't let that issue deter you.

And to counter @jemmerjams point, while also still agreeing...

I flipped my u-shaped pillow upside down! Now the U is at my feet and I use my regular pillows up top. The u-shaped pillow was not good for my neck at all and I spent many days in massage therapy and the chiropractor to correct it.

I find that this positioning of the pillow has many benefits besides the neck stuff!:

A.) Bagheera sleeps in the u-nook at my feet and looks adorably comfortable, while not disturbing my sleep.
B.) I get some serious spoonage out of the arms; so flexible.
C.) I get to use my comfy cozy king-sized pillows.
  • That only means you're more evolved than the rest of us, @chopchop25. You bypassed the neck pain entirely and boogied on down to ComfyTown.
  • Oh there has been neck pain - but swapped pillows and pretty much went away
  • I didn’t like mine flipped. My feet felt trapped. I keep the nook at the top but sleep far enough down that by head is my pillow inside the U.
  • I haven't felt trapped, but it is a pain to untuck and swap my feet when I want to turn over. I had to fully wake up the first few nights, now I think I'm doing it half asleep.
  • I tried flipping mine a few times when I was pregnant with Z because I didn't want to give up my pillow. I should try that again now. I haven't been using it because I'm just to lazy to climb into it!

  • How do your feet feel trapped or tucked? I guess I don't have that problem.
  • @sliztee Well, I’m a little crazy and claustrophobic about my legs. I need to be able to move them freely or I freak out. I feel like I can’t spread my legs wide enough then they’re stuck inside the U. I also freak if DH drapes his leg over me the wrong way. So take my crazy with a grain of salt. Haha
  • I also hated the u-pillow flipped upside down....It was diffcult to flip sides in the middle of the night!

Cracking up at this because I went through the same ordeal of getting the case back on last night. Broke a sweat!
  • I also have the Snoogle and love it. I didn't care for it much my first pregnancy but I can't be without it for this one. Lately if I don't us it then I end up on my stomach! ouch. lmao about the pillow case. They are a bitch. I just wash the whole damn pillow at once to avoid removing
