has anyone else thought about sleeping arrangements during the newborn days?
the babies’ room is small, and i was thinking of having them share a crib for a little while. dd1 barely used hers, so i’m really hesitant to buy a second crib that could potentially also go unused. of course, if they take to sleeping on their own in the crib, i’ll have no problem buying another one when they outgrow sharing.
i’ve done a tiny bit of casual research on this, and saw that there was a safe way to do this when they’re small.
curious to hear what others are planning.
also open to discussing how to bed-share/co-sleep with twins if anyone is planning to do that. in an ideal world, i’d rather they sleep in their own room, but sometimes that can’t be helped. dd1 was an insanely clingy baby, and we had to co-sleep for most of the first year.
also, i don’t know what my hospital’s policy is, but i am wondering if they should share their plastic bassinet in the hospital right after they’re born. there is a bit of research that suggests that twins do better in the first few days when they’re kept together, and i’m interested in knowing more about this and reassurance that it’s safe.
so, yea. what do other MoMs think? sorry this got so long-winded.
RE: Sleeping - My plan is to put one baby in the pack n play, one in the Halo bassinet, both in our room for the first few months. I do own two cribs, so I plan to transition DS1 to a twin bed after he turns 3. I'll transition DS2 to a toddler bed when the babies are ready for cribs.
Rant: I have a sinus infection. The pain is awful (this coming from a woman who had a CS and VBAC with 3rd degree tearing), and I'm miserable. Called the OB this morning and they suggested I take Tylenol and give it a week. Ummm if Tylenol was helping I wouldn't be calling! I've had a cold for 2.5 weeks. So frustrating.
@KellyT22 would you recommend the halo bassinet? i think i saw that they make a double now.
also, ugh that sinus infection sounds so terrible. are you using a saline spray to help clear things out? i didn’t know that tylenol did anything to help actually treat the problem.
@highsteaks Our nursery is also a smaller room, but we've already committed to 2 cribs (it helps that we got them at Babies R Us on sale for about $100 each). We plan to use the twin bassinets on the Baby Trend Twin Nursery Center when they're small and sleeping in our room. We looked at the Halo Twin Bassinet, but I feel like I cannot justify spending $450 on something we'll only use for 6 months (at most).
@KellyT22 I'm waiting for a sinus infection to take hold. My allergies have been terrible lately and this is when I usually get them. I wish there was something more they could do/give you to ease your pain.
Rant: I'm currently at 14w 5d and my nausea/headaches have suddenly gotten worse. I was fine this weekend - other than being super tired - but now I'm miserable during the day and NOTHING sounds good to eat to ease the nausea. Plus, people are REALLY pissing me off at work (which, I'm sure, has something do with me not feeling well). Is it Friday yet?
@KellyT22 I’m having the same issue. I haven’t slept since Friday because the pain from the congestion is so bad. Called the ob (I’ve already tried many things in the list). Nurse told me to take Claritin. It actually worked. I was shocked! I would have done Zyrtec but I didn’t have any on hand.
As as far as sleeping. I was planning on using the rock n play in the beginning. I’ll have to purchase another one, but we’ve used it with all three kids and it was worth the $75. After that I’m not sure. They can sleep in it until they can roll over. I am considering buying a second crib because I’m going to put girls in a room and boys in a room... It’s a difficult decision. They may sleep better together, and it kinda hurts my heart to think about separating them. I will have to check into our hospital policy too. I know they’ll be small, but the plastic, rolley crib doesn’t seem wide enough for two... But my memory might not be serving be well on the matter.
@EM0704 yea, i was wondering if maybe they might have double size plastic cribs, because i imagine this wouldn’t be an uncommon request. wouldn’t be surprised if they deny my request, though, as they’ll want to cover their butts in the event that something tragic happens.
@highsteaks My twins each had their own crib from the beginning (because we had the room and money), but you can absolutely have them share until they're able to either roll over or scoot around until they're touching one another.
We never co-slept since it scares me (I don't judge those who do out of necessity since sometimes it's the only way you get some sleep yourself), my boys were in their cribs from day one with no trouble.
@highsteaks They slept in their hospital-provided bassinets except when they were inconsolable or feeding themselves to sleep, when one of us (or, once, a nurse) held them.
Both, actually. When we were awake to watch them, they slept in one bassinet since they enjoyed cuddling together. When we were asleep, we felt safer with them separated, even though they couldn't move and smother each other.
I’m definitely enjoying this conversation. It’s helping me so much! I also have this really random thought that isn’t really important at all.... I wish the Bump had a “twins” setting on the weekly baby updates. I’d like a 3D imagine of how these kids are both going to fit in here. Hahaha....
@smulrich16 We are also planning on using the twin bassinet Baby Trend Nursery Center! We haven't gotten it yet but it looked like the best option when I was searching online. The twin Halo bassinet looks awesome, but I would hate to spend that much if they didn't like it and it's bulky to use with a singleton in the future! We're hoping to have them in there next to our bed for a couple months. Maybe sometimes we can take the bassinets off and let them cuddle on the top part of the pack n' play area? We'll see. I like that the bassinets have their own vibration settings and sounds, etc. in case one likes that kind of thing but the other doesn't! As for cribs, we aren't sure yet...I've seen some crib dividers but have no idea where to get them or if that would be too confining since we tend to transition around 3-4 months.
Also, @smulrich16 the same happened to me around 14 weeks...the headaches were unbearable! I hope they ease up for your sake. Dizziness, headaches, nausea and heartburn are my biggest enemies at 17 weeks!!
I am so asking my hospital about co-sharing the plastic bassinet thingies. That would be wonderful if they could safely be together.
A little of an odd question - but I once saw a picture of twins just after birth, with their placenta and cords still attached between them. I thought it was such a heartwarming and wonderful picture. At my 9 week scan they thought it looked like there was only one shared placenta. Do you think the hospital would allow the umbilical cords to be attached for that long to get a picture (kind of silly, I know) or do you think they will cut it off immediately after Baby A is born? I know it depends on vaginal vs CS but I'm curious! We did delayed cord clamping with my first and got to cut the cord ourselves a good while after the birth. I suspect we won't have that ability if things are rushy-rushy with a twin birth?
@FreeTheElf i think it won’t hurt to ask your ob, and remind the hospital staff on delivery day. i’m curious to see what your doc says when you ask—please update when you find out.
the more responses i hear, the more i’m leaning towards rooming-in with a double size pack n play type thing for at least the first few weeks. plus what @MojieJo said about keeping them together at the hospital during the day, and separated at night makes so much sense. thanks everyone for your input!
You guys! I had THE BEST appointment yesterday! We had a sono and I can’t tell you the relief I felt when I heard both heartbeats (I guess I didn’t realize how worried I really was...for no real reason). Both babes are growing and we’re kicking each other all throughout thr US.
Then we met with an APN (as my regular doc was in a procedure) who usually works at MFM. She gave me so much awesome information. She even said, without my prompting, that as long as the babies are well positioned, there is no reason we couldn’t do vaginal delivery. It was really the first time I’ve talked to anyone who really knows twin pregnancies. Even better, she takes care of the referrals at MFM (which I got at this appointment) and said that she would get us in sometime over the next two weeks and gave us the complete run down of what to expect. Basically, a ton of appointments with MFM, my OB, and various specialists. It’ll be worth it for two healthy babes!

Tylenol does nothing to treat the problem....it's supposed to help with the pain, but it's not. They didn't think it was time for "treatment" yet.
