TTC After a Loss

When to consider a specialist? Any insight helpful

Have been ttc since August 2017 with two pregnancy losses, one at 21 weeks and one at 5 1/2 weeks. OB seems to think I'm perfectly healthy and to "try again next month" however I don't think I can take a heart break of another loss.

Both times we got pregnant on the first try, so getting pregnant is not an issue. Just keeping the pregnancy is an issue.

I know most doctors won't start testing anything until a 3rd miscarriage, but I'm toying with seeing an RE, just for a second opinion. I know it can't hurt but am also wondering if I'm jumping the gun... I guess any input you guys have would be helpful.

I'd call your insurance and ask what their policy is. Mine is 3 miscarriages or a year of trying before they will cover a specialist/testing. I know the feeling though. I've also had 2 and it's a very frustrating policy. I wish you the best of luck and am sorry to hear about your losses.
On a side note consider changing your user name so it's easier for us to remember who you are and easier to tag you. ☺
  • I've tried! I can't figure it out! I've been all over my settings... I set a knot account up a few years back when I was planning a wedding and that must be where this came from. Help??

  • I don't know how to change your name, sadly. However I do understand how you feel. I've had 2 miscarriages as well, and my husband said he doesn't want to try again if we have another miscarriage. :(
We don't seem to have trouble getting pregnant fairly quickly, but apparently have horrible luck once we do. We were lucky enough to get genetic testing on the baby afterwards and got answers. The first time was a blighted ovum, and second was triploidy, a chromosome error. Neither were anything to be predicted or prevented, but I guess we have awful luck. One can only take so much bad luck though...
All that to say, did you by chance do any testing on your pregnancies? Maybe it can tell you if there's something more going on or just horrible luck?

@nomangos23 Did they do any testing after your 21 week loss? I had my first loss at 13 weeks, and even my pretty unresponsive OB followed up with a lot of testing because it’s so abnormal to have a 2nd+ tri loss. Her workup was incomplete though, and moving to a specialist resulted in a real diagnosis- insurance has covered it despite ‘only’ having two losses.

You might be able to get authorization from insurance to work with a specialist earlier rather than later. Most RE offices will help guide you. If you’re comfortable doing so, I’d recommend working with a specialist- some causes are pretty fixable with modern medicine, and you deserve to try and spare yourself any more heartache.
  • Yes, we did an amnio after the 21 weeks loss and all chromosomes came back normal.. so, no answers for either loss. And I think I agree. If I have another loss, at least I'll know I did everything I could to prevent it (by working with an RE) . Above all of this, I've learned how completely out of control I really am. It's a hard thing to move past.

Have you tried a specialist yet?
  • Same here, both times we tried we got pregnant. My doctor has chalked our losses up to anomalies and bad luck as well. It's hard to not have any answers. I guess third time is a charm? Good luck to you and your husband. I've got my fingers crossed for you.

Hi ladies, just thoughts chime in here. I too have gotten ku fairly quickly (3x) but sadly lost all 3. One of the other gals on here sent a link to a study on 'hyper fertility' which I found quite interesting. I'll try to find the link and share it. I don't know what truth there is to this theory but I'm trying to work on getting my eggs as healthy as they can be (eating right, staying away from chemicals, taking supplements, etc). We took a little break from ttc though so only a few months back at it. Not pg yet so I really have no idea if any of this will help anyway but it can't hurt.
  • @nomangos23 I’m sorry for your losses. This got long but I wanted to say many RE’s now consider two losses sufficient to test for recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL) causes. Especially with such a late loss, which is very rare, if I were you I would push for testing. Although there aren’t many, there are a few treatable conditions that lead to RPL. Unfortunately many times there doesn’t seem to be an explanation.

  • Actually we saw an RE today and it was AWESOME. She was so through and is running several tests to rule out several factors. I know this isn't guaranteed to solve my problems, but I definitely feel taken care of. If anyone else is wavering, I say DO IT!
