High Risk Check-in w/o 5/17

Hey, y'all! This is a check-in for those of us that are high risk. Whether you've known from the beginning or were just told, this a place to get some extra support. High Risk pregnancies bring an added level of stress and fear to an already stressful time, so use this as your safe space. It should go without saying, but I will, a lot of this thread thread will be TW, so there is no need to use them. We've either all been through this or are navigating together. So let's support each other as we navigate the craziness of a high risk pregnancy.

1. How far along are you? EDD?

2. Why are you high risk? How many weeks were you when you found out?

3. What is your protocol? I.E. extra monitoring, early delivery, etc.

4. How are you? Use this as your rant/rave/screw this whole situation post.

GTKY: What is your favorite thing about being pregnant?

    1. How far along are you? EDD? 15+5 due 11/3

    2. Why are you high risk? How many weeks were you when you found out? two pre term labors so I have been high risk straight away.

    3. What is your protocol? I.E. extra monitoring, early delivery, etc. extra monitoring. We start bi weekly, then weekly appointments earlier and check for dilation earlier.

    4. How are you? Use this as your rant/rave/screw this whole situation post. I am ok. I have been super sick, and very crabby this time around. I spend a good week and half fighting with my insurance and financial aid to try and get the shots to help prevent pre term but no one wanted to help. I’ve finally just calmed myself down and put myself on restrictions at work in hopes of it helping. Luckily everyone I work with is being super awesome about it.

GTKY: What is your favorite thing about being pregnant? literally the ONLY thing I like is feeling baby’s hiccups. Otherwise I absolutely, positively DESPISE being pregnant. It is not a good time for me and I’m extremely jealous of all the woman who glow and are soooo happy. I literally count down the seconds until I’m not pregnant anymore. I will obviously never be doing this again lol

    1. How far along are you? EDD?
13 weeks, edd is 11/22, but best case scenario docs will induce no later than 37w (11/1).
    2. Why are you high risk? How many weeks were you when you found out?
mo/di twins (sharing placenta); confirmed a week ago. previous history of iugr and low amniotic fluid.
    3. What is your protocol? I.E. extra monitoring, early delivery, etc.
starting at 16w, ultrasound appointments with mfm every other week plus ob appointments. mfm will check for signs of twin to twin transfusion syndrome which is basically when the blood circulation is shared unequally between the twins causing serious issues for both.
    4. How are you? Use this as your rant/rave/screw this whole situation post.
this really sucks. reading about ttts has really put a dark cloud over me lately. i’m tired of all the extra pills i have to take daily (6, not including the b6 and unisom i’m also taking for the ms). i’m irritated that dd isn’t allowed to come to mfm appointments with me, so dh is using up pto to watch her while i’m gone. i’m concerned about the increased costs of all of the extra monitoring and potential double nicu stay.
GTKY: What is your favorite thing about being pregnant?
    @ashkee05 i agree with you 1000%.
between the ms misery and the high risk stuff, i’m really stretching right now to see the positive side of pregnancy. however, i have already started to bond with the babies because of how worried i am, and my heart is so full of love already. i’m spending a lot of time dreaming of all the happy times to come when we’ll be a crazy family of 5 and that helps me get through the days.

bonus: for those who might be wondering about how my cousin is doing ( @wildrainbow ?) she’s past 39 weeks and her cholestasis is considered just a very mild case at this point. her mfm doc wants her to induce asap but her midwife thinks she’s a good candidate for continued monitoring and hopefully going into labor on her own eventually. she wants to try the latter.

    1. How far along are you? EDD? 12w1d, EDD 11/28

    2. Why are you high risk? How many weeks were you when you found out? Welcome to the laundry list.... I knew going into this that I would be high risk. History of preterm labor, misshapen uterus, advanced maternal age (I turn 35 6 days before I'm due, but will delivery well before that), previous c/s, history of Gestational Diabetes (literally diagnosed 2 days before I delivered my DS2), and, of course, I'm pregnant with TWINS!

    3. What is your protocol? I.E. extra monitoring, early delivery, etc. I don't think I'll do progesterone because I guess it's not effective with multiples. I did the shots my last pregnancy. I will deliver no later than 38w. Tons of extra monitoring for the twins.

    4. How are you? Use this as your rant/rave/screw this whole situation post. I mean...having twins has changed everything. So that's fun. I'm annoyed that I had to do a 3-hour GD test already (I passed).

GTKY: What is your favorite thing about being pregnant? I like having a baby, but sorry, I don't love being pregnant.

    1. How far along are you? EDD? 13w5d - EDD 21 November but I'm expecting to deliver around 7 November.

    2. Why are you high risk? How many weeks were you when you found out? I have a mechanical mitral (heart) valve.  I have to take blood thinners all the time, including throughout my pregnancy.  I knew before I got pregnant that I would be high risk.

    3. What is your protocol? I.E. extra monitoring, early delivery, etc. Extra monitoring throughout pregnancy, including extra scans.  Most pregnant women in New Zealand are cared for by a midwife, but I am under the care of the high risk team at the hospital, with an obstetrician in charge of my care.  I am going in for appointments about every two weeks, and I need regular monitoring of my blood thinners two (which I have to inject myself, twice a day, such fun).

    4. How are you? Use this as your rant/rave/screw this whole situation post. This is my first pregnancy.  It was planned, and I'm super stoked to be pregnant and I can't wait to meet this bubba, but I am not enjoying the experience of being pregnant.  I have a lot of experience being a patient (with several major heart surgeries in my past), and I'm finding this whole thing quite stressful and triggering.  I keep thinking about all the unpleasant experiences I've had in the past and worrying that things like that will happen again.  I've also been finding my obstetrician a bit difficult to deal with (not providing test results in a timely manner, not really listening to my concerns about treatment and monitoring regimes), but New Zealand is so small that I don't have the option of changing, so I need to find a way to work with him.  Plus all the pregnancy symptoms which are totally normal but seriously not fun (fatigue, feeling ridiculously emotional, sundry aches and pains, increased incidence of migraines, heartburn, did I mention fatigue).  Ok, rant over.

GTKY: What is your favorite thing about being pregnant? I'm so relieved to read your responses above because I don't know if I have a favourite thing about being pregnant.  Seeing the baby on an ultrasound is pretty cool, but it's such a short glimpse compared to the rest of the time which is just... bleurgh.  I did take all of my pads out of my handbag the other day, thinking I'm not gonna need them for a while now.  That was a pretty good feeling.

@KellyT22 - I saw you said you were on progesterone during your first pregnancy?  How long were you on it and may I ask why?  My OB just recommended I stay on it  (I'm currently on a super high dose from IVF) until week 20.  I've been googling and i cant find reasons why or pro's or con's.  She said its because i feel pressure/slight ache in my uterus and I shouldnt at 13 weeks.  However I'm receiving care in the Philippines so i have to verify everything I'm recommended .....

    1. How far along are you? EDD?
I am exactly 13 weeks today. EDD November 26th

    2. Why are you high risk? How many weeks were you when you found out?
I knew going in I was high risk. My last pregnancy I was high risk also. I have hypertension and I am ama. I will be 39 when I deliver

    3. What is your protocol? I.E. extra monitoring, early delivery, etc.
Since I got pregnant under the care of a fertility specialist. I had weekly monitoring until 12 weeks and progesterone. Now I am at my OB. The nurse said I will be going back every 2 weeks already but they didn't do that last time, this early so we will see what happens. Sometime around 24 weeks I will be going to mfm every week for scan to check my fluid levels.

    4. How are you? Use this as your rant/rave/screw this whole situation post.
To be honest, I am fine right now. I am sure later on my back is going to be killing me, but as of right now, I actually feel pretty good. I guess that is my trade off. I have to deal with a lot of other scare stuff (although not as scary as some of the things you ladies are, I am so sorry!), but I have an easy (relatively) 1st trimester.

GTKY: What is your favorite thing about being pregnant?
When the baby starts to move. I think I have already felt it here and there. Mostly at night when I am quietly laying in bed, but I can't wait to feel it for real.

    1. How far along are you? EDD?
    15 weeks. Nov. 11th

    2. Why are you high risk? How many weeks were you when you found out?
I haven't officially been declared high risk yet, but I had ICP with ds. Because of that I have a 60 to 90% chance to have it again. I am going to the MFM very soon since I'm already itching a lot and it's just to early according to my Dr.

    3. What is your protocol? I.E. extra monitoring, early delivery, etc.
I will have extra monitoring (twice weekly NETs and u/s), lab work once a month to check bile acids and LFTs, deliver no later than 37 weeks.

    4. How are you? Use this as your rant/rave/screw this whole situation post.
To be honest, I'm kinda scared. ICP was hard on me last time and I almost gave birth at 27 and 31 weeks. It scares me to think I may be dealing with again so early, I don't know what that means for my body. I was very sick last time and spent a lot of time in the hospital, so much so the L&D nurses knew us by name. I really don't want to do that again.

GTKY: What is your favorite thing about being pregnant? My favorite thing is baby movement. I've been feeling some movement already with this babe and I can't wait until it gets stronger.

    1. How far along are you? EDD?
I am 15 weeks (and change). Due 11/7.
    2. Why are you high risk? How many weeks were you when you found out?
Preeclampsia & HELLP syndrome with my first. I knew before I got pregnant I would be high risk.
    3. What is your protocol? I.E. extra monitoring, early delivery, etc.
I see the regular OB on the normal schedule (for now), and the high risk team every 6 weeks. I will start seeing the high risk every 4 weeks after 18 weeks. Other than that, it really just depends on my symptoms. My OB told
me to reduce my work load after 28 weeks, and she told me to be prepared to get sent to L&D basically anytime once we hit viability.
    4. How are you? Use this as your rant/rave/screw this whole situation post.
I knew what I was signing up for, so I’ve been pretty okay with it. A woman I knew from her HELLP advocacy died giving birth last week. I have been pretty emotional about it.
GTKY: What is your favorite thing about being pregnant?
I am just starting to feel those first flutters. Love it!!!

    2. Why are you high risk? How many weeks were you when you found out?  I knew I would be high risk going in.  I have hypertension, AMA (44 if I go full term), and 2 preterm births under my belt.

    3. What is your protocol? I.E. extra monitoring, early delivery, etc.  I see both my OB and MFM.  I alternate every two weeks.  I will start walking and doing all the regular things I can to jump-start labor at 37/38 weeks.  My birthday is 11/20 and I'd rather not give birth on my birthday.

    4. How are you? Use this as your rant/rave/screw this whole situation post.  I am fine now.  I had some bleeding early on and was really, really tired.  EXTREMELY tired.  I have some of my energy back, but insomnia has kicked in already.  Uuugh!  I was hoping to avoid this.  I had it with all of my girls.

GTKY: What is your favorite thing about being pregnant?  Honestly, my amazing DH.  He was wonderful before but has really shown another side of himself during this pregnancy.

@preggersabroad I was on progesterone with my second pregnancy because my first son was born prematurely. The pro for me was that it may prevent preterm delivery....DS2 was born at 39 weeks, so it checked that box, though it's not a guarantee. Honestly the biggest con for me was having to go to my OB's office every week for the shots. I went weekly from 16w to 36w. They say it may slightly increase your risk for gestational diabetes as well.

I'm pretty sure that my uterus feels tight/full/pressure for the duration of all of my pregnancies. I think if you're on progesterone, it's probably worth just staying on.
