AMA (35 and older) check in - week of 5.13!

edited May 2018 in December 2018 Moms
Hey there fellow AMA ladies! There was some interest expressed so I thought I'd get our weekly check in going again!

1. If you'd like, share your age and what it'll be at delivery.

2. Is this your first AMA pregnancy? If so, any concerns? If you've been AMA before, any wisdom or insight to share?

3. Any AMA related rants/raves/questions?

4. GTKY - if you could time travel to any era, what would you choose?

Re: AMA (35 and older) check in - week of 5.13!

  • 1. If you'd like, share your age and what it'll be at delivery.

    I'm 37, will be 38 at delivery!

    2. Is this your first AMA pregnancy? If so, any concerns? If you've been AMA before, any wisdom or insight to share?

I turned 35 while pregnant with my DD so they treated me as AMA and I got the additional testing. I'm high risk anyway, due to an autoimmune disease, but at least it meant my genetic testing was covered by insurance.

    3. Any AMA related rants/raves/questions?

My raves related to AMA are just that I'm so much more mature, so much more laid back, and such a better, more confident role model for my daughter than I would have been at a younger age (I feel like I was a late bloomer, confidence and maturity wise.) My rants are all biological - I just hate that it's harder to get and stay pregnant as you age. Suffering **tw** two losses on the way to this pregnancy was very hard on me emotionally and physically end tw**and I think it probably means we're going to stop after this one instead of try for three, which I had my heart set on for a while. I just don't know if I can go through all that again, let alone the toughness of another pregnancy, birth and postpartum period. I will just be SO grateful if this pregnancy works out and stop there, but I can't help but wonder how things would be different if I were even 3 years younger.

    4. GTKY - if you could time travel to any era, what would you choose?

I know it would be scary as hell, but I've been obsessed with WW2 my whole life and I would like to live in the early 40's for just a short time to see what it actually felt like to live then. I also am pretty into early medieval history but honestly everyone would smell so bad, haha.

  • 1. If you'd like, share your age and what it'll be at delivery.

    38/39

    2. Is this your first AMA pregnancy? If so, any concerns? If you've been AMA before, any wisdom or insight to share?

Yes, but I was high risk with my son due to SUA.

I'm slightly concerned about disorders/birth defects after someone asked "aren't you worried about them?"... well now I am, thanks!

    3. Any AMA related rants/raves/questions?

Not really. Just wish my body was in better shape & a little worried about recovery.

    4. GTKY - if you could time travel to any era, what would you choose?

    Probably medieval times
  • 1. If you'd like, share your age and what it'll be at delivery.

    I'll be 41 in June.

    2. Is this your first AMA pregnancy? If so, any concerns? If you've been AMA before, any wisdom or insight to share?

First AMA. No concerns, things are going well, still haven't see my Dr. yet though.

    3. Any AMA related rants/raves/questions?

    Nope

    4. GTKY - if you could time travel to any era, what would you choose?

    Elizabethan era
  • 1. If you'd like, share your age and what it'll be at delivery.

    I'm 40 and I turn 41 in July.

    2. Is this your first AMA pregnancy? If so, any concerns? If you've been AMA before, any wisdom or insight to share?

This is my first pregnancy.  <3 I appreciate any suggestions any of you have!

    3. Any AMA related rants/raves/questions?

I also feel like I've been a late bloomer.  I have Hashimoto's and generally worry about all of the things, that I suspect, all pregnant women do. I'm grateful everyday for this pregnancy. I cried last night thinkingof the possibility of meeting this baby... I'm absolutely amazed by how many hormones are pumping through me ;)

    4. GTKY - if you could time travel to any era, what would you choose?

I would go 100 years into the future.  I have so many questions about what technology will bring to the human experience!
  • 1. If you'd like, share your age and what it'll be at delivery. 35/36

    2. Is this your first AMA pregnancy? If so, any concerns? If you've been AMA before, any wisdom or insight to share?
1st ama pregnancy. No big concerns - just want my baby healthy like all the moms do. No wisdom to share.

    3. Any AMA related rants/raves/questions? Just trying to enjoy and savor every moment even if it’s a crummy moment because this will be my last pregnancy. I have 2 boys. I’m not sure if I want a girl or boy, but I’m sure I’ll be happy and sad no matter what.

    4. GTKY - if you could time travel to any era, what would you choose? Hmm maybe the 50s- modern amenities available, but no computers/cell phones/social media. It would be such a different experience.

  • 1. If you'd like, share your age and what it'll be at delivery.

    38 now and at delivery

    2. Is this your first AMA pregnancy? If so, any concerns? If you've been AMA before, any wisdom or insight to share?

This is new for me. I was 33 when I got pregnant with my daughter, 34 at delivery.

    3. Any AMA related rants/raves/questions?

Raves: I so agree, @maureenmce — I am a much better parent than I would have been 10 years ago. I’m sure plenty of younger moms are ready and able to be wonderful parents at a younger age. But for me, it really made a difference having had a chance to travel, finish grad school & dissertation (my first “baby”), and be fundamentally satisfied with my life and ready to be a parent first, full stop.

Rants: It took 2 years to get pregnant this time. It’s been really emotionally taxing with all the ups and downs. I’m still not entirely confident everything is okay with this prevnancy. 2 more days till my 8 wk visit.

    4. GTKY - if you could time travel to any era, what would you choose?

    The future! Hopefully not dystopian...
  • 1. If you'd like, share your age and what it'll be at delivery.
    40. I'll be 41 in June

    2. Is this your first AMA pregnancy? If so, any concerns? If you've been AMA before, any wisdom or insight to share?

*TW* I was pregnant last summer and suffered a loss *TW END*  It has been a long road to this pregnancy with lots of infertility treatments.  I am just excited that I will have all the extra testing.

    3. Any AMA related rants/raves/questions?
Not really.  I am sure the exhaustion is real with any pregnancy at any age.

    4. GTKY - if you could time travel to any era, what would you choose?
    I think the 1920's

I am 40 and am due on my 41st bday. :)

    2. Is this your first AMA pregnancy? If so, any concerns? If you've been AMA before, any wisdom or insight to share?  Yes,, my first.  My daughters are almost 11 and 7.  My youngest was born a few days after my 34th bday. I never did any screening with either of them but plan to do the NIPT this time.

    3. Any AMA related rants/raves/questions? Not yet.  Barely anyone knows I am pregnant yet; I am curious to know if I will get a bunch of shock and comments re my age. I am also not married this time, yet. SO and I decided to TTC before an engagement due to my age.

    4. GTKY - if you could time travel to any era, what would you choose? Hm, maybe the 60s, just for the music.

    1. If you'd like, share your age and what it'll be at delivery.

    37/38

    2. Is this your first AMA pregnancy? If so, any concerns? If you've been AMA before, any wisdom or insight to share?

This is my second AMA. I was 36 when my son was born. No real concerns since I’ve been through it before.

What annoyed me last time was being treated like a different person just due to my age. I didn’t have and actual issues, I was in excellent health and shape and had a completely normals pregnancy. But i was treated so differently because of my age. In general I find a lot of the AMA treatment to be so generalizing.

    3. Any AMA related rants/raves/questions
I always wanted to be a young mom, but I too love being an older mom. I feel it’s given me so much more perspective and patience that I know I definitely didn’t have in my 20’s

    4. GTKY - if you could time travel to any era, what would you choose?
Not to get too heavy, but I’d guess either the future (although that scares me for many reasons) or pre-colonial Africa. This country hasn’t been to great to my people.

    1. If you'd like, share your age and what it'll be at delivery. I'm 34, but will be 35 in June.

    2. Is this your first AMA pregnancy? If so, any concerns? If you've been AMA before, any wisdom or insight to share? This is my first, I had my son when I was 33  My biggest concern is just being more tired and taking longer to bounce back!

    3. Any AMA related rants/raves/questions? My doctor so far hasn't acted like anything was out of the ordinary.  I declined genetic screenings.  Since I'm having two, there is no differentiation, so I decided I didn't want the extra worry.

    4. GTKY - if you could time travel to any era, what would you choose?  I'm pretty content with the modern conveniences we have now. I can't imagine living in a time with no A/C or cars. Ew.

  • @gigglemomma I have hashimoto's too! Luckily, it hasn't been giving me problems this time around so far.The only thing I would say to watch out for (other than being monitored during pregnancy, obviously) is to have your doctor stay on top of your thyroid levels *after* birth. I got postpartum thyroiditis, which is where your body swings from hyper to hypothyroid, and it took them literally a year (!) to get it in range! Hoping that doesn't happen this time, but it's good to have it on your radar. My endocrinologist didn't even think to warn me about it because my thyroid had been so steady up until that point. Whoops!

  • Happy Monday Ladies! Hope everyone has a great week!

    1. If you'd like, share your age and what it'll be at delivery. 35 now/35 at delivery

    2. Is this your first AMA pregnancy? If so, any concerns? If you've been AMA before, any wisdom or insight to share? This is my first AMA, but I was considered high risk with last pregnancy due to a placenta issue so I did get additional monitoring then too. My doctor said I will have similar monitoring this time also. No concerns being AMA really but I was diagnosed with a subchorionic hemorrhage a few weeks ago so I have been a little concerned about that

    3. Any AMA related rants/raves/questions? I agree with @maureenmce that I feel like I am way more mature and able to handle a baby now then I was even five years ago. I didn't go away to collage and I didn't even move out from my parents house until I got married at 27, so I feel like I really needed that time to be independent and sow my wild oats, so to speak. On the other hand, I am just so incredibly tired and I wonder if it has anything to do with my age. I definitely had more energy during my last pregnancy.

    4. GTKY - if you could time travel to any era, what would you choose? I think I'd go to the 60s. I feel like it was a simpler time and people in general were nicer and more genuine but there were still basic necessities (like electricity) so it would be doable.

I’m a little late to this, but happy to participate :)

    1. If you'd like, share your age and what it'll be at delivery.

40, will be 41 in October

    2. Is this your first AMA pregnancy? If so, any concerns? If you've been AMA before, any wisdom or insight to share?

Not my first AMA pregnancy - I guess it’s my third, but *TW* we’re still working on our first kid.  I’ve not made it past 11w5d before, unfortunately, but that first pregnancy was natural (at 38) so we didn’t get any extra monitoring, just NIPT at 10 weeks.  Just concerns about staying pregnant at this point.  I have chronic hypertension (managed with meds) and apparently as of my physical at the beginning of last month borderline blood sugar, so I feel all kinds of high risk.

    3. Any AMA related rants/raves/questions?

I guess like others, how hard it can be to get and stay pregnant at this age.  We really didn’t think it’d be this hard - especially since we got pregnant naturally the month/cycle after our wedding (I was 38 - we didn’t meet till I was 37).  We realized that it’ll have been 20 long months since the last time we went to an 8-week initial appointment with an OB (tomorrow afternoon - last RE appointment is tomorrow morning) - in that time we’ve *TW* miscarried our NIPT-normal little girl (two days after getting her falsely comforting “normal” result), seven IVF cycles (4 of which were fruitless - though one of the retrievals was in 2012 right after I’d turned 35), and *TW* transferred and miscarried a PGS normal little girl.  We went straight to IVF to PGS test to try to avoid another *TW* loss and it still didn’t “work.”  Really hoping this one sticks ‘cause we’re tired.

    4. GTKY - if you could time travel to any era, what would you choose?

Haven’t thought a ton about this, but I’d probably just want to go somewhere after they EDIT:  *figured out* antibiotics since they were a game changer.

  • @tunnel It varies depending on provider, but if you're 35 and otherwise healthy, you'll probably be treated just like a normal pregnancy, except that genetic testing will be covered by insurance if you want it, which is a nice bonus! Depending on the practice, you may be offered an additional ultrasound or two, but, again, it varies.

@gracie4400 Oh gosh, I am so incredibly tired too! I can't tell how much of that is my age and how much of it is just being a working mom in a 2 career household, but I do suspect I would have more energy if I were, like, 27, haha.

@artemis618 You have had such a tough road, I really, really hope everything goes great with this pregnancy and you get your take home baby! <3
  • tunneltunnel member
@maureenmce thanks! I was going to get the genetic testing regardless, even if I had to pay out of pocket, and I will gladly accept all of the opportunities to see my baby via ultrasound - so win, win in my book!

I initially declined genetic testing, but found out today that Panorama has expanded their test to learn more details about twins, including zygosity.  After confirming with my insurance that it's covered, I put in a message to my OB because it doesn't look like they typically provide this particular test. Not sure what to do from here.

@tunnel I think like @maureenmce mentioned it depends on the practitioner, but last time I had to go for weekly ultrasounds and stress tests after 36weeks. It was a pain in the butt because they were in to different locations, so double the appointments.

They also treated me a bit different during labor and delivery because of my age and tried to use it as a reason I needed to be induced. I declined the induction.

  • @krob Oh wow, that sucks! I am so glad my OB basically treats AMA the same except for genetic tests and some additional ultrasounds. I would never get induced just on the basis of being AMA! How annoying!
  • @gigglemomma I have hashimoto's too! Thank you! I had a huge hit during the first month and almost doubled my synthroid dose.  Since I had tested right before getting pregnant,  they didn't want to test but I pushed for it.  I gained 5 pounds in those couple weeks but lost it after the increase.  I thought for sure we would swing hyper after giving birth.  I guess that's what's tricky about it.  Since the immune system attacks,  and is being suppressed it could have a huge swing one way and then the other.

    Thank you!
  • @gigglemomma It's awesome that you're so on top of things and pushed for more testing! That's really my only advice - test often! Because like you're saying, it can swing in any direction and change can happen fast! After giving birth to my DD, within only 4 weeks, my TSH went from .003 to 20. It was insane!
  • @maureenmce That! That's exactly what happened,  it was higher than when I was first diagnosed. ♡

Second (34:35 with DS). I had the same irritation as others with being treated differently when borderline, but also loved the higher monitoring and tests which made me feel more confident. Like @lexidawg I’m excited for the extra testing, my NIPT is next week.
