Pregnant after IF

Frozen embryos and Zika

Hi everyone! My DH and I conceived our son via IVF (he's almost 1) and have 3 frozen embryos remaining. Thinking about trying for #2 early spring 2019. We want to go on a couple of trips before then to areas with risk of Zika. Does anyone know if this is risky, even though we already have frozen embryos (that were created after no trips to Zika areas)?

Thanks!

I dont really know but just wanted to say I have a close friend who went to Brazil (was in the jungles) and when she got back she found out she was pregnant. She did all her tests and everything is ok. She hasnt given birth yet but her doctor assured her the baby was fine. I, personally, wouldn't go knowingly. But, its up to you to.

  • I think one of the biggest concerns with Zika is if it is sexually transmitted through sperm because it lives in semen longer then other body fluids. If you already have the embryos then this would not be a concern. I would however advise getting yourself and your husband tested upon return to insure that you don't have Zika. The CDC says wait six months before trying to get pregnant after traveling to areas with Zika, but I feel like if you are testing for it and don't have it then it should be fine. I would talk to your RE or OB for a medical opinion though :)

Yes, it is risky. The infection can live in sperm for up to six months and be transmitted back to you, and therefore to your fetus, potentially causing birth defects. Your options are to either abstain from sex for six months (boo) or to get both of you tested for zika a few weeks after you return (which can be pricey and hard to access depending where you are). Personally, I would just wait six months after the trip before doing an FET.

The fact that the embryos are already created doesn't really matter since it's the in utero infection that causes birth defects.

  • Just popping in to second what @adirat said. It's great to have frozen embryos but the infection doesn't care if they're frozen or naturally conceived - it attacks the baby no matter what. I'd go somewhere fun without the threat of Zika :)
  • We're thinking of the same thing actually. But we'd put 6 months in between our trip and our transfer. Regardless, I want us to both get tested.
