Pregnant after IF

Feet/ankles swelling 23 weeks :(

Hi all,

Just checking in to see if anyone else around the 22/23/24 week mark has started experiencing foot and ankle swelling. I wonder if it's the onset of hotter weather or if it's just my new normal, but it feels somewhat early for this. I'm trying to elevate my feet at work (I have a desk job and it's exceptionally uncomfortable to sit here with my feet up on a stool) but by the end of the day, my toes look like little sausages  :D I'm not super worried about something like preeclampsia but the fact that I woke up this morning and my feet still were a little puffy makes me worry (we don't have the air conditioning on yet and it's been pretty hot sleeping weather). Anyone else?

Yuppppppp! Mine started at around 20/21, I was eating too much salt. But the swelling never went away. I'm miserable because none of my shoes fit. I live in my adidas superstars. And I put my feet way up high at night, and the swelling does go down but I wake up with puffy feet. It's the new normal. Drink lots of water and walk to keep the circulation going.

  • Mine started around 23/24 weeks too. It's early, but not uncommon. No GD or preeclampsia here. so just a regular pregnancy side effect. The only sure thing to help is getting feet elevated. I also work in the office, and prescription grade compression leg wear is the only way I can do it without feeling my feet swooshing and bubbling over the shoes half way through the day. There are only 2 pairs of shoes I can fit in through the day  :(

  • I second the compression socks! I wore them daily and they helped a ton. My swelling was really bad after my C-section. My Dr had me point and flex my feet to help move the fluid and reduce the swelling. Also, having DH "rub" the fluid up my legs. Basically massaging up from my ankles to my knees. Doing that took the swelling way down.
  • Thank you, @coco305, @FuzzyDust, @laurad75 and @persnickity. Now I don't feel quite so much like I'm not handling this pregnancy very well physically. :p

@sarcasticowl A co-worker had to switch to Birkenstocks full time at like 21 weeks because of swelling. She had a lot of luck with making sure to stand up at her desk for a couple minutes every hour. I hope you get some relief!

  • @adirat That might be coming soon! My Birks are ready to come out for the season :)
  • Yeah I have awful swelling at my ankles and legs and it started around then... after my Csection it got 5x worse. I bought some compression socks this time around though and they seem to help
  • This started for me a few weeks ago- mostly the end of the day and not terrible but definitely uncomfortable and noticeable. Glad you asked about this!
